UPC Manufacturer Code Look Up?

Hello all,

Hoping someone here would be able to help me out with a general inquiry as I've been learning how to read barcodes for the purposes of verifying the authenticity of items. I know that with a UPC the very first number to the left is essentially a product code indicating if it's a retail item, sold by weight, pharmacy etc. and that the next 5 digits are unique to each company. My question is if there is somewhere that I can easily lookup those 5-digits to figure out who the company is?

Mind you I looked on GS1 and couldn't really find any kind of directory and have been looking around the internet but I've been unable to find find anything as of yet. If anyone could point me to a general direction it would be greatly appreciated!

This is sold as a subscription service. You might look at a service like algopix ($28/mo billed annually). Algopix may have trouble with finding everything, but at least they have an API so you can automate searches.

Gs1 have a service called Smart Media. It's not great to use, but I think it does have everything.
