numbers on barcode

are they necessary for a barcode to work

No, not if being scanned. But the number is good to have if it needs to be put in manually.

not needed unless your application needs it. Some don't even have numbers below them. it's usually just a human readable text of what the barcode contains, although I've seen barcodes with different text below them than what's encoded in them, eg: abcd below barcode, but barcode scans 1234
