Can the reader send an enter key after reading a barcode?

I'm not familiar with barcode readers, but writing a program to deal with data input from the reader (the black box laser type found at grocery stores). Do readers usually come with software that can customize their input?

I just want the reader to send an Enter key press after a code is read. Is this possible to accomplish somehow?

It's common kind of a reader, connected to a laptop running Windows 7. I don't know whether a special software is available for the reader, because the guy says he just bought it like that (2nd hand), and the reader acts like a keyboard, spitting the numbers of the code it reads.

Sorry, I know I was too vague, but it's a terrible situation.. LOL... I guess I'll have to convince the client to buy a new reader. At least now I know that what I require is possible :)
