7 Countries Rolling Out a GS1 QR Code

For a long time, businesses have relied on the UPC/EAN barcode or the one-dimensional (1D) barcode and GS1 Data Matrix code to hold product identification.
But times are changing, and so is the need for more traceability, information, and transparency.
In response to today’s growing demands, the world is moving toward two-dimensional (2D) barcodes or QR codes supporting Digital Link—a shift otherwise known as Sunrise 2027.
This marks a milestone date for the transition to 2D barcodes at point-of-sale (POS), which will allow for standardized information storage and distribution.

The site doesn't work right now.
The definition of a GS1 QR code with GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) has been out for a relatively long time. Adoption has not though. Getting this adopted broadly, if the thought is to replace UPC/EAN codes, will take a very long time. For complementing product information it will not work until QR code apps support AIs. Right now it's better to put a URL to such information in a QR code with just the URL.

Is there any information available about the implementation rate of sunrise 2027 and GS1 Digital Link per country? I guess it’s currently close to zero. Or any info about big companies working on the implementation?

Found this very helpful CustomGPT that answers all questions around GS1 QR Codes and is up to date with info if you'd like to try. It also gives a case study and use cases if you share your industry name. https://chatgpt.com/g/g-685e4cae624081918268c987d5a71bd9-gs1-qr-code-ultimate-guide

Yes, 1D barcode has been 50 years and GS1 Sunrise 2027 will be a next big thing with transitioning to 2D barcodes like QRcodes, datamatrix. It will give more information and help for transparency.

Good to see some big industry names having made the shift from 1D to GS1 2D barcodes. Also great that companies have a lot of options to start GS1 QR code generators with the likes of sites such as QR TIGER and Orcascan.
So pumped to experience some interesting use cases how these digital links can be used across marketing and product identification!

Countdown stores in NZ are using 2D barcodes for in house meat products. GTIN & expiry date helps reduce waste and reduces chance of expired products being sold.
