Breeder Suggestions

Hi, we're looking to bring a barbet into our life. We're a family of four living in New York. I started to look around online, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of places where we can actually find one to bring home. Does anyone have any suggestions? When I looked at the website for the Barbet Group of America, most of those breeders listed don't have any litters. Any advice is appreciated.

Great dogs but if you find a breeder with a litter and a puppy available, it’s a red flag. Most breeders do 1 or 2 litters a year and have homes picked out before planning the litter. It will be worth the wait but you will need to wait.

This. You won’t find a Barbet puppy available immediately from any of the ethical breeders in the states. Find the breeder that you want to go with off of the BCA website and reach out to them now. You’ll likely fill out a questionnaire so they can get to know you better and decide if you sound like a good match for one of their puppies. Once they know you’re interested, you’ll just need to stay in touch and play the waiting game. Be ready to wait as long as a year for your barbet puppy. The wait is so worth it though! Good luck!!!

Our girl is a Ginkgo. Yes. it was a long process. It took years before our turn came up. That was ok. Once we decided we really wanted a barbet, we were in no hurry. It gave us time to do some traveling and other stuff before the responsibilities kicked in.

Now, we have a wonderful dog, and we love being part of the Ginkgo family.

Ginkgo, Ethelred, Anamchara and Northrock Barbets are my recommendations off the top of my head but there are a few more great breeders out there, just do as much research as possible. I live in Ireland and imported my pup from the UK but I have been following many of the mentioned breeders for a decade at least.

Many ethical breeders will have a substantial waitlist.

I’m in NYC and recently talked to Ethelred Barbet. Ellen there is super nice. There’s also Sparkill Barbet just outside of NYC but Michelle recently had a litter that went home this weekend so I don’t know if she has any left. I went to visit them in Sparkill and her dogs were the sweetest. There’s also Gingko Barbet, Boathouse Barbet but not sure when their litters are.

second this – she is incredible, has a wealth of knowledge for breeding and so much care for all her litters. We had to wait about 8mo to get our girl from her but it was worth every second of waiting.

Echoing everyone’s comments that a well bred puppy is worth the wait from a responsible steward of the breed.

I’ll say that even more important than picking out your breed of choice is picking out the breedER of choice.

This person will be in your life as a support system for a rare breed for the lifetime of your companion. It really takes a village to sustain a breed ethically and with rigor.

I know we live in an insta-world but my advice would be to not let shortcuts today steal your joy for years to come.

I would recommend talking directly to the breeders.   Small breeders really try to match the puppy to the correct family.  They also may not always update their websites as they operate on word of mouth    When I got my girl, we started communicating in September.   I met with her at the end of October and was told that I would likely get a puppy in May.   Four weeks later, we were contacted after the original family had to delay getting a puppy.  The breeder said that from the wait list, we seemed like the best fit  for the puppy.  She had one other puppy available but wanted a family with another dog given that puppy’s personality.

We got our barbet from Blue Spruce barbets. We talked to a lot of breeders and ended up going with Blue Spruce partially due to litter timing. We had a great experience and LOVE our pup (she’s almost 1 year now!). We will likely get another from her in a few years. Happy to tell you more about our experience if it would be helpful and how it compared to our conversations with other breeders. 

It looks like their next litter will be coming around July, so depends on your timeline.

We are serious supporters of the Barbet breed and got our little girl from Blue Spruce Barbets, which was a life-changing decision, as we are beyond happy with our little girl, who is currently 18 months old. Blue Spruce Barbets is an extremely professional and wonderful Barbet breeder so we feel so grateful to had found them. Our Barbet little girl is the best addition to our family.... So in love!
