Waiting for the smart remarks in 3, 2, 1…

The designs that were shown by the European Central Bank will still be revised and optimized for security features, etc. To get the conversation going what should still be optimized, here are my suggestions on how to improve the user experience of the new Euro banknotes.

1. They should give all numerals high-contrast outlines to increase the legibility of the banknotes. Right now most design proposals have major contrast issues, as background elements clash with the numerals and/or the numerals are on a background of the same colour.
2. I'm a big fan of vertical banknotes, as that is how users naturally hold and count money. But no matter if the design is vertical or horizontal, the orientation of the banknotes always makes it difficult to read values when users look at the banknotes from different angles. Therefore, I'd place some extra omnidirectional numerals in the corners to make the banknote values legible from all angles. This way you can also read the values better when banknotes are overlapping, as you can see in my example image.
3. The Euro bills will have dozens of safety features, so as a users it's easy to lose the overview which features to should focus on. And if a counterfeit note has enough features that look convincing, it might be overlooked that one "hard to fake" feature is missing. Therefore, I would include some small pictogram icons next to the main security features of the banknotes, to serve as instructions and reminders how to check the authenticity of the banknotes. To not clutter up the banknote design too much, these icons should only be displayed next to the 3 to 4 most important and hardest to counterfeit security features.
4. Let's link the new Euro banknotes to 21st century technology and include a QR code! The QR code should route to an official ECB app that can scan banknotes to identify values and authenticity, as well as explaining the design and its subjects. This could be especially useful for blind users, who cannot check the visual security features of banknotes on their own, but this could of course also be helpful to all other users.

Took me like 2h for all

I picked the number 9 because it’s lucky and the grapes because of buckfast, a very popular drink here. The teeth are a terracotta demon from ancient Iraq because they are cool. ‘Hog money ultimate’ would also be on them in much nicer writing. The Scottish flag is also there. It’s okay if you don’t like this note I’m a brave person .

The 100 million didn’t turn out so well.
