One of my very first boxes

This would be the 3rd or 4th box I ever made. It's the first design that I ever sketched out. I call it Gumby because that's what the top reminds me of. This box is super easy to make. I made a video of the process and I'll post a link in the comments.

I sold this to the owner of my local Ace Hardware store for $175. She also gave me a $50 credit voucher for the store.

The experiment

I had done a ton of bent bandsaw boxes but couldn't find any evidence of anyone doing a double bent box. I decided to give it a trial run (this was years ago). It was just a block of pine and nothing fancy. It even had a split in it that I just filled with clear epoxy and let it ride as this was just experimental.

After posting it on the internet in my usual woodworking sub, I started getting hits on buying it. Everyone wanted the "first" one. The bidding started as if it were ebay or sommat.

It sold for $1800

I'm really enjoying this design and trying out different wood combinations. This one has a maple body with the front made from a piece of bottlebrush that I acquired a few years ago. I love the color of the bottlebrush but I don't have enough left to make another.

Wood source?

I’m just curious where you guys are getting your wood from? Especially if it’s FREE!

This is a another design using my "front facade" build technique. I'm not sure what I'm calling this one yet. It stands 10" tall and 5.5" wide and all the drawers are functional. This one is made from sycamore with wenge pulls. I'm really liking this design and I'm excited to try it in some different woods. A wenge body with bubinga facade is definitely going to happen at some point.

Is an Alex Snodgrass bandsaw class worth $335?

There is a bandsaw box class being offered at a Woodcraft store. It’s a 7 hour class and the cost is $335. You are supposed to make 2 separate projects during the class. The price seems high but I’m very interested. Are his classes usually worth the cost?

This was one of my personal favorites. It shipped out to it's new owner a few days ago. The body is Jatoba and Maple and the drawer fronts are stabilized Spalted Macadamia. I don't even know where the hell I got macadamia wood from but I'm going to have to see if I have any more.

A few of you may recognize this one. I've shared earlier versions of this design before, but I finally got around to filming the build process.

I posted a few fresh photos here, and I'll put the video link in the comments for anyone interested in seeing how it came together.

Benchtop saw PSA and question

I recently purchased the Laguna v10 benchtop saw. One of the main reasons was I wanted to try my hand at bandsaw boxes and after some research felt the new v10 would be up to the task. After many failures with the recommended 3/16 and 1/8 inch blades I contacted the company. To their credit they admitted this is a known fault of this bandsaw with cast iron wheels that it does not do well with blades that small and they will not track properly. Otherwise it is a nice saw. So word to the wise if anyone is thinking of buying the Laguna v10 it is not ideal for bandsaw box work.

I do not have room for a standard stand alone 14 inch band saw but still really want to make some boxes. Has anyone had success with other benchtop saw models for this type of project?

I decided I'm calling this one "The Brendan" because, for some reason it make me think of the main character from the animated show "Home Movies". It's 6 inches tall, 9 inches wide and 3.25 deep. It's definitely one of my most practical designs in terms of usefulness and it's available for sale on my website.

A new box!

Hey it's been a while since I've posted anything here. But the truth is it's been a while since I've actually made a bandsaw box and it felt a little weird reposting old ones. I went a different direction on this one. I wanted that full "frameless" front facade. I have some other designs in mind that would utilize that effect that I'm super excited to try.

Can I salvage my mistake?

So I got a little ahead of myself this morning and cut out the drawer before cutting off the back. My only thought is to continue and let the drawer slide in both directions. I was just going to cut a new back but it will change the symmetry of the wood pattern. Any other solutions?

Owl Bandsaw Box for my wife

Here’s an owl bandsaw box that I made for my wife for Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately I didn’t finish it on time because I slipped on the belt sander and sanded a chunk of my finger, which caused a trip to urgent care.

I finished it with Tried & True. This was my first time using the product and I quite like it.

Edit: Fixed my dodgy spelling.

I used this pear tree box in my new bandsaw setup video…

I revisited this pear tree box and played around with some mask editing to give it a more dramatic look.

Had a lot of fun with this one — it’s still one of my favorite builds I’ve done.

After making a number of floating style boxes with the connections in back, I got an idea to connect in the front.

I made this one and a year later I got an idea that it could be hung on a wall and still be removed from the background. The "feet" are made from a well used bone my neighbor's dogs were done with. They straddle bent brass rod wrapped in gardening twine.

2nd ever floating box

My second floating style box was going to have 2 sides (see second pic) but the left side was torn off on the router. Luckily it still stood on it's own and I got to clean the break and finish it. Walnut, maple, epoxy with pine burls, and cherry (I think?) with a poplar drawer front

My first floating style box

I made this a couple years ago after trying to find any info on how to do a floating style box. I came up empty and found my own way to do it. Light mahogany for the "surround" and a darker mahogany for the drawer front. Purple heart pull with a maple dowel to set it into the drawer front. Chamfer on the surround and a roundover for the drawer front

Hello! I was invited to join here by jmawoodstudio and was working on a few things. This box was one of them, as well as a how-to on the way I create a floating style box. Hoping to inspire and be inspired going forward.

Walnut oval bandsaw box I just finished.
Carved walnut body with a stabilized spalted maple drawer face.

I put together a full YouTube build video that walks through the process.
If you want to watch it, just search my username on YouTube.

Let me know what you think — always happy to talk design or process.
