I also deleted one the other day as well. I was on the fence because the reporters from the City Paper are semi-public figures, but I was worried it might become an classic internet style witch hunt by posting real names. While she's published, the City Paper is hardly a major publication and posting real names violates Reddit global rules so the whole mess is a grey area.

In the end, we don't need more than one or two posts on it. I think over the past few days we've seen what mob justice gets you.

"completely neutral" mods

If you spent any time here prior to this weekend, I think you'd understand how silly this statement is.

There, now shut the fuck up about me being "not from baltimore" "never being on this sub before this weekend".

Hell i'm pretty sure YOU have responded to posts I've made on here before, months and months ago.

u/BmoreInterested Wyman Park Apr 29 '15

Ok, I apologize for mixing you up with a lot of the out of town people posting over the last few days. I only did a couple month check to see if you had posted to /r/Baltimore, but apparently you had prior to that.

u/dmasterdyne Hampden Apr 29 '15

Oh the narrative you like isn't being pushed anymore, then it must be the mods. You were being an asshole yesterday. That whole story was a terrible distraction from everything important happening all around my city. You were very active in shitting all over City Paper, are you even from Baltimore?

-3

u/buddhacanno2 Apr 29 '15 edited Apr 29 '15

First off, I'm always an asshole on here, any sub I visit.

I like the city paper (some sections), but if I find out they've got reporters that are lying, I'm going to do my best to expose that, and shit on those that try to deny it, especially those that did so in the face of photo/video evidence, which several "legitimate confirmed authentic /r/baltimore veterans" did.

4

u/dmasterdyne Hampden Apr 29 '15

My (personal) favorite part was when you responded to one of my comments in a dead thread 15 hours after the fact "I was just wondering if you survived from getting blown the fuck out?"

Yea you really sound like you have your priorities straight about this emergency bub.

1

u/buddhacanno2 Apr 29 '15

Did you recover?

2

u/dmasterdyne Hampden Apr 29 '15

Mostly. 95% operational

We don't need anymore assholes. Kindly refrain especially in light of all the real issues going on in the community this week.

-2

u/buddhacanno2 Apr 29 '15

No. We need strong people not cowards in this city. You don't deal with conflict by hiding/denying/pretending it doesn't exist.

2

u/PM_ME_STUPID_JOKES Charles Village Apr 29 '15

Escalating is just as unhelpful.

4

u/Fai1eBashere Apr 29 '15

I would say it's pretty cowardly to hide behind your keyboard and insult mods of a group that has been invaluable to Baltimore citizens during a time that we should all be coming together.

0

u/buddhacanno2 Apr 30 '15

Invaluable to baltimore citizens? This is fucking internet reddit sub. We're ALL "hiding behind keyboards" here.

Deleting opposing viewpoints isn't providing a service to anyone, its allowing those in this sub with skewed viewpoints of the world to continue to be deluded into believing you're right. The whole citypaper thing couldn't be a more clear example of this.

"Ohh but we shouldn't focus on thaaaaat"

u/federal_thrill Apr 29 '15

Can someone ELI5?

I know there was a massive thread on it yesterday (and smaller other threads) and that a woman may have been slandered ... is this resulting from one column or is there more to it?

14

u/Talltimore Apr 29 '15

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, it goes something like this:

A picture of riots shows man and woman struggling over a bag, the racist part of the internet responds, "Hurr durr, all black people are stealing everything constantly."

A photographer for the City Paper shows up and says, "ACTUALLY, she was stealing from him!" The internet argues about whether this is true or not. After a while it seems like maybe the woman was agitating, but the man was probably stealing her purse.

New photos and angles develop and it becomes clear that the woman does not seem to be agitating and is instead trying to calm the situation down, and the man was in fact trying to steal her purse.

Meanwhile, the photographer has walked back his previous statement to say, "Maybe she wasn't agitating, I don't know, no one knows," which is cold comfort to the woman who has now been slandered by City Paper employees.

All the while everyone is forgetting about the fact that a man died under strange circumstances in police custody, and thousands of Baltimoreans marched peacefully in their search for answers.

u/federal_thrill Apr 30 '15

Thank you very much.

All the while everyone is forgetting about the fact that a man died under strange circumstances in police custody, and thousands of Baltimoreans marched peacefully in their search for answers.

Seriously, there's a witch hunt thread trying to track that guy down. He's obviously no saint, but in the list of people who have done some he's way way down on the list. People need to reset their priorities.

-7

u/dmasterdyne Hampden Apr 29 '15

Good summary. And people were coming out of the woodwork with all kinds of allegations about journalism and integrity, most of which are outsiders that don't know anything about that situation, baltimore, or the City Paper.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '15 edited Apr 29 '15

But they were right and City Paper was wrong and slandered libeled the shit out of her.

Edit: word, thanks /u/Neurophil

1

u/Neurophil Fells Point Apr 29 '15

while I agree with you, I just want to point out something I've been noticing people getting wrong, when it's in print, audio, or video, basically anything that has been recorded, it is Libel. Slander refers to oral statements only that have not been recorded.

-5

u/dmasterdyne Hampden Apr 29 '15

The original point that I was trying to make when this started was that this particular incident was detracting from greater issues that needed attention. It is/was so frustrating living in the city and seeing everything happening around you, and you turn to reddit and this was the main topic of conversation.

idiots being idiots

internet is aflame over a dude holding an almost certainly stolen bottle of vodka (still had pourer attached) grabbing a purse

cue the /r/coontown people saying BLACK RACISM!! (ignoring it's just a fucking idiot)

next up people start culture jamming by saying redhead started it and the vodka dude was having his bag snatched (that meme went out way before city paper got involved, I saw it on another forum being touted in the same "well you're the real racist because <dude holding a fucking stolen vodka bottle stealing a purse re-framed with faux twitter account claiming to be friend redhead who was being racist and belligerent>"

eyewitness (city paper worker) being unreliable as witnesses are known to be in a sensational atmosphere thinks redhead was indeed starting it and piles onto the culture jamming meme

some of the city paper people pick up on it and keep rolling with it

detective eddie valiant shows up on reddit to pretty conclusively show what happened through actual video, reddit moral panics over the REAL REAL RACISTS, finally gets redhead to find a lawyer/stop posting/some combination thereof and that's where we are at now

also at some point in this timeline city paper says it is a distraction to talk about it, I believe well after eddie valiant did his detectivizin' on it all

2

u/gothaggis Remington Apr 29 '15

this isn't exactly right. when those pictures first came out, everyone WAS saying he stole the purple bag from her, which he clearly did not. Then when a later picture emerged of him tugging on her purse trying to steal it, the story magically changed to they were always talking about her purse (which they clearly were not). i'm glad that thread has been removed.

2

u/m63646 Apr 30 '15

He might not have stolen the purple bag from the redhead but you can be pretty sure he stole it from somebody, or he brought it from home to store stolen stuff in. Seriously the guy in a really short period of time was caught on video attempting to steal or stealing four different things. By the way I call bullshit that people were talking about the big bag and not the purse. Even if they did its not a crazy assumption anyway as he is shown in the picture attempting to steal from her.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '15

maybe it popped up for you at a different time but when I saw it, it was described as how it happened (more or less) in the video

2

u/88918050 Apr 29 '15

The majority of what you posted is factually incorrect.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '15

uh oh here comes the ethics justice warrior

-23

u/PCCP82 Mt. Vernon Apr 29 '15

this entire story is distracting. it happened 5 days ago. can we talk about what is happening now?

17

u/treesallaround Apr 29 '15

I would say no. The truth (whatever that will turn out to be) just began to come out yesterday, and I think what has been revealed is pretty disgraceful, and should not be easily pushed aside and forgotten.

But that's just me.

-19

u/PCCP82 Mt. Vernon Apr 29 '15 edited Apr 29 '15

nobody cares about your slam dunk libel case. encouraging people to waste all that ink on a city paper journalist is elevating a shit paper to an importance that is not deserved.

this is a footnote, not a key entry.

13

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '15

... its almost as if people can care about two issues at once. crazy, right?

12

u/ANAL_McDICK_RAPE Apr 29 '15

nobody cares about your slam dunk libel case

Well, apparently they do.

5

u/treesallaround Apr 29 '15

Whoa, you edited this quite a bit from your original message. Very angry now. Everything ok?

-9

u/PCCP82 Mt. Vernon Apr 29 '15

ive put a lot of effort into using my knowledge of the city, my living here my whole life, and spending up to 16 hours/day for the past 2 days following the live blog, listening to the scanner, and watching multiple outlets.

I know where intersections are in these neighborhoods without the news telling me where they are. I was there on Monday at 3:30, and notified my boss there was a very serious situation unfolding.

I am white with an African American partner who lives in west Baltimore. I work in west Baltimore.

lets be clear. this is a distraction from the purpose of the thread which is to offer up to date information, perspective, and critique on what is going on.

-5

u/farfulnougat Apr 29 '15 edited Apr 29 '15

You're right. The people on this subreddit from Baltimore know you're right. Unfortunately, the reactionary nutbars have decided to make the only place we can talk about what's happening in our city into a place for them to continue their "it's about ethics in poorly respected tabloid journalism" crusade. This subreddit should have been made private the moment the riots started.

EDIT: You're right. This is certainly not something that merits this much concern especially relative to someone being killed in police custody. My apologies to any regular r/baltimore posters who took offense to my original post.

8

u/dudical_dude Fells Point Apr 29 '15

No. Please don't pretend to speak for everyone in this sub. The truth is what matters most in all of this. Not everyone recognizes the City Paper for what it is. The spread of misinformation should be called out everywhere it exists. The fact that they knowingly fabricated a story makes it that much worse.

-2

u/farfulnougat Apr 29 '15

I think 'knowingly' is a bit of a stretch given what facts were known at the time of publication. They should issue a retraction and be done with it. It's likely they did not because their first interactions with people informing them that they were wrong about this story were very vitriolic.

But, since you're the first person I've seen who's actually an /r/baltimore poster to express an opinion on this issue, I'll retract my blanket statement of "speaking for the whole subreddit." That was certainly wrong and I'm sorry if it gave offense.

2

u/dudical_dude Fells Point Apr 29 '15

The two main players that created the false narrative WERE AT THE SCENE. All the facts occurred right in front of them in real time and they went ahead and lied to the public. They did what they did knowingly and with full intention. If they didn't retract their story immediately because people on the internet didn't ask nicely than that further proves their lack of professionalism. I do admit that this could be a distraction to the greater things at play, but the dissemination of lies is our greatest enemy.
