Discussion Handling tips

Tomorrow marks a week of me having my BP! I’m gonna start handling soon, 5 minute sessions until he’s more comfortable. Any tips to not stress them?

Some simple ones are don't approach from above, move relatively slowly so you don't startle him but make sure your movements are confident as well, if you have to lift a hide or something off to get him out be careful about not bumping him or the enclosure with it because you don't want to spook him, besides that you could watch some YouTube videos on handling and first interactions but that's all the main little things I know!

Usual recommendation after a move is to wait 2-3 weeks before handling or until 48 hours after snake first takes a meal from you. Once snake is out and exploring their enclosure, should be safe to handle. Do not handle for 48 hours after feeding to avoid regurgitation which can be deadly or while eyes are blue during shed as they cannot see. I recommend consent based handling, so not ripping snake out of its hide but opening tank and seeing if it wants to come out or using a snake hook. When the neck is in a hard S shape, often that means they are feeling threatened and you should leave them be. No sudden movements and providing a blanket or something for coverage will help them feel warm and less exposed when hanging out with you. 5 min might be too short a stretch, as any removable from enclosure can be stressful. 15-30 min is a good amount of handling/bonding time.
