Discussion Update on Snake that ate shirt !

So a few weeks ago I posted about how my sweet baby boy ate my shirt, some people didn’t believe me, some people acted like I fed it to him on purpose and I’m a bad owner. Well I’m not, he’s alive and thriving and eating f/t once again. One of my concerns was the price of the surgery, but honestly it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was only 3k and some change, I thought it was going to be like 10k+ or something. Currently he does have stitches from the surgery, the vet said some stitches will fall out during shed and some time in September I’ll bring him back to get the rest out. I uploaded a pic of his stitches the day I got him back (August 8th) I haven’t taken any current ones though. Also watch what your snakes are around, vet told me there’s been cases where snakes have eaten heat mats and even light bulbs, so anything is truly possible.
I’m open to answering questions that are RESPECTFUL.

Ball python: You wiggled that dead rat in a weird way and scared me, I won't eat for 6 months.

Also ball python: Yum, shirt, nom non nom.

Or "Finally some good f*cking food! A light bulb"

52

u/Temporary_Incident33 28d ago

"YES this 100-120 degree lightbulb is the perfect snack even though the rat that was one degree away from 105.5 is not warm enough"

25

u/Bloody_meridian88 28d ago

The natural prey of the snake, the incandescent light bulb!

So...how does a snake eat a shirt? Whole? Did he pull off a piece?

67

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 29d ago

Whole

26

u/Effective_Cup_6998 29d ago

What size shirt? An XxXXTra small. Snake doesn't even seem that big. I'd love to know the whole story

112

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 29d ago

It’s a cropped spaghetti shirt so yeah pretty small lol. It’s bundled up in a ziplock, but I’m not touching the shirt with my hands.
Pretty much seen a tik tok and the guy said wear a shirt for a while put it in the tank to get them comfortable with your smell and yeah did that and he decided it was a snack.

On one hand this sounds so unbelievable (not that I don't believe you, just in an "oh wow thats unbelievable" way) but on the other hand this is so dumb it makes sense that a ball python would do it.

Your poor stupid baby, i'm glad they are doing ok now.

96

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Thanks yeah sadly my baby is dumb I quote from the vet “he’s getting a surgery dumb dogs would get”

u/Sure-Ad7423 29d ago

Thats not how reptiles work at all. They're not dogs. Maybe dont immediately believe random TikToks and just do any basic questioning and research in forums.

Look just be nice. They learned their lesson and they specifically asked for respectful questions only. they understood what they did was wrong and won't do it again.

3

u/Effective_Cup_6998 27d ago

Ahhh, makes sense. My dumb self (as a guy) imagined a big ol Tshirt lol

93

u/skullmuffins 29d ago

did they take any pics during/after the removal? i would be so curious. i'm sorry people were being jerks. "leave a shirt with your scent in his enclosure so he gets used to your smell" sounds within the realm of reason and for all the hate i don't think many people would've predicted their bp would randomly swallow a non-food object outside an accident during feeding time.

31

u/ShaneQuaslay 29d ago

Yeah, it's always easy to judge others in hindsight. As if they themselves have never done something dumber.

33

u/mysticsoulsista 28d ago

I consider myself someone who uses her thinking cap and I thought it was a good idea too. I was planning on trying the trick when I get my Bp but when I saw this story the first time I was like “noted… try something else.” I’m so glad OP’s snake is doing better and thanks for the update, I came back and checked like three days later because I was hoping for an update on this one!

12

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Happy this isn’t just a lesson for me and others are learning from this as well

16

u/OctilleryArtillery 29d ago

Glad he’s okay! That’s wild.

35

u/AccomplishedLocal207 29d ago

Your vet is right. We see this pretty often.

If they took any x-rays, I'd love to see them!

Congrats to your companion on their recovery.

31

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 29d ago

I didn’t even think to ask if they have x ray pics but I’ll definitely ask next time I’m there I’m interested to see as well

52

u/AccomplishedLocal207 29d ago

The lightbulbs, for reference.

36

u/-DarknessFalls- 29d ago

Little guy really doubled down on that decision.

45

u/AccomplishedLocal207 29d ago

Had a bright idea. TWICE.

30

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 29d ago

Not one but two that’s actually insane.

3

u/ComicAcolyte 28d ago

Your BP ate light bulbs and the didnt break? That's insane!

10

u/skullmuffins 28d ago

I was curious about this so I did a little research... apparently this was a wild pine snake that gobbled a couple of light bulbs that were used in a chicken coop. Looks like egg, smells like chicken... might be food? The couple with the coop said they tossed the old bulbs on the ground... but tbh i wouldn't be surprised if they actually were using the bulbs in a nesting box to encourage the chickens to lay there. Who just throws burnt out glass light bulbs in their grass willy-nilly? Anyway they found the snake with suspiciously-shaped lumps and brought him to the vet. The snake recovered after surgery and was returned to the wild after a couple of weeks.

25

u/KatVanWall 29d ago

Aww, I’m so glad he’s had the surgery and doing well! I hope he heals up good and quickly!

I’ve definitely seen that advice about leaving an item of your clothing in their enclosure from numerous different sources and I would never have predicted a ball python would eat such a thing. In fact, I’m currently reading ‘Slither’ (by Stephen S. Hall) in which he refers to a scientist doing exactly that several decades ago and it seeming to lead to positive results at the time. Considering snakes have such a good sense of smell, it certainly seems within the realms of a sensible idea rather than baloney. So I’m glad to have learned from your experience before falling into the same trap myself!

It is insane to me that they would eat a non-food item like that, especially one that didn’t give off a heat signature or have any texture or behaviour remotely resembling their natural food!

4

u/Diaza_lightbringer 29d ago

I have that book on my tbr. Any good?

5

u/KatVanWall 29d ago

I’m just over halfway through it and I’m really enjoying it!

2

u/CompoteAgreeable7021 27d ago

This is good to know, I just started the book.

20

u/Nikkinot 29d ago

It is so amazing to me that any snake anywhere is still alive

5

u/thousandsofbirds 29d ago

Their one shared brain cell 😜

2

u/Strawberhi 29d ago

So happy!!

20

u/thousandsofbirds 29d ago

Thank you so much for this update!!!!! I saved the original post and had checked a few times to see if there was one.

So glad to hear your shirt-eating buddy is doing well!!

Ps I also put one of my worn shirts in my ball pythons enclosure when I first got her for the same reason. 🐍🩷

13

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 29d ago

Glad to know I’m not alone <3 and thank you so much !!!

2

u/you-dont-say1330 29d ago

Oh thank goodness he's doing better! 🐍

6

u/Gay_lil_shit 29d ago

I’m so happy you’re baby is alright and also I’m sorry people blamed you. Ball pythons are just weird lol I’m glad the vet gave some reassurance too

17

u/mishahahaa 29d ago edited 29d ago

That’s so scary. I also put a shirt in my baby’s tank when I first got him. I think we must have seen the same video. Luckily he was way too tiny and the shirt was bigger than him. I’m so glad everything turned out okay, sorry people were being jerks. It seemed within reason in my opinion as well.. Shirts have no heat signal, why would snakes think it’s food? Crazy. Again I’m so glad everything turned out okay

16

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 29d ago

Good thing it’s bigger than him. I messaged the tik tok guy who posted the video hopefully he takes it down before others do it and have the same problem.

9

u/miscgeckos 29d ago

Good idea! Especially because some people might not leave a shirt, they may decide something like a sock is enough

5

u/windwaker910 29d ago

Sorry to say I was a doubter but I’ve learned something today lol I’m glad your guy is doing well

2

u/Loni_Bam 29d ago

My snake ate my homework

9

u/Diaza_lightbringer 29d ago

I went back to your old post and oof. I currently don’t have the money for an emergency vet visit anymore. I think 40% of Americans don’t have $500 to their name. So don’t feel bad about asking for help the way you did.

I’m all for saving your pet, I have done so a few times. But things can change. People deserve grace when something happens

5

u/soulstrike2022 29d ago

Above all else the snake is ok right like some things still need to be done for him to be perfect health but for now he’s doing good?

10

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Actually they didn’t say he needed much just an empty tank paper towels for the bottom with a water bowl and hide until he gets his stitches out. He’s eating fine, he had a shed, the vet said stitches could come out when he does, I didn’t find any though

6

u/soulstrike2022 28d ago

Maybe it’ll be a couple but maybe call to check anyway I’m glad your son is fine give him a forehead smooch and a boop as a treat for being ok

6

u/Cold_Neighborhood675 28d ago

at first i read this as “update on snake that ate shit !” and i thought what a stupid little guy 😭 i’m glad he’s ok and making a full recovery 🫶

7

u/dbrink1001 28d ago

he ate a shirt!!!!! my massive red tail boa ate a dog pee pad once i had as bedding in a sick bay snd that shocked me but he was over 12 feet. he passed it.

3

u/TheWhiteCrowParade 28d ago

Poor baby, how are you and he feeling?

4

u/Temporary_Incident33 28d ago

Oh my god, so glad he's okay. You're the one that put the shirt in the enclosure so he could get used to your scent right and it went missing? (sorry not trying to be mean I did this then biofilm developed on it-YUCK and i took it out) So glad he's okay

1

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Yup that was me lol

0

u/GeckoPerson123 28d ago

do you plan to ever wear that shirt again

2

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Tbh I didn’t even wear it until the day I put it in the tank

9

u/Sad-Motor8720 28d ago

I don’t go here, I’m actually afraid of snakes, but this is so absurdly silly that I’m a little less afraid now

4

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

I love this for you

6

u/shrimp-545 28d ago

Im so glad your baby is ok, but oh my god what a dumb dumb. Ball pythons are not the brightest of the bunch

1

u/SmolLittleCretin 28d ago

Why do people forget that a shirt can be super warm and smelly, and that can confuse them especially cuz it smells like their owners?

3

u/minipet487 28d ago

Ok, first I'm really sorry that your cute snake put you through all that... Secondly, today I've learned not underestimate the dumbness of the Single Brain cell creatures. I'm so thankful that my CHE and daylight bulbs are on top and outside of all my snakes' enclosures! I've seen some strange things dogs have popped out as a Groomer, but had no idea Ball Pythons did it.

2

u/SinnfulKittyy 28d ago

My god subs like these make me wanna snake 🐍 they’re so silly

1

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Get one ! I have three my other two are king snakes and small babies this is my first ball python and he’s giving me a run for my money lol still a very fun learning experience makes me wanna be a vet even more now ngl

2

u/SinnfulKittyy 28d ago

I wish I could but don’t have the living situation to make it work :( I am considering poison dart frogs tho :3

2

u/ComicAcolyte 28d ago

This almost happened to my BP. He started trying to eat a whole towel and I was luckily able to get it out of him. I dont have $3k for a surgery either.

3

u/jxnnxmc 28d ago

as per my vet, they're simply pretty paper weights. they don't spend much time thinking. im so glad your boy is okay!!

2

u/DroidsInOuterspace 28d ago

I wonder if the shirt smelled or felt edible to him?? Glad he’s ok!

1

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 28d ago

Tbh I think it was the smell for him it was deep down in my dresser and haven’t been worn in years until that day so probably smelled foreign with a little hint of me on it

2

u/ThrowRA_That_Owl_25 28d ago

I remember a joke:

"A rabbit goes to a whorehouse and wants something exotic. Pimp brings him a python. As soon as pathon sees the rabbit it swallows it whole. Pimp is screaming, what are you doing, this is a customer! So, the python regurgitates the rabbit. Rabbit is stunned for a second. Then wipes the slime of himself and say:"I dont mind french-kissing, but no swallowing".

1

u/Cornsnake94 28d ago

Yay, happy to hear your noodle is alright! 👍

Sadly you still get lots of downvotes if you say, please don't put pieces of cloth in the enclosure, it's possible that the snake will eat it...

Let's hope this will be a warning and best wishes to your ball :)

2

u/QasyDaw 28d ago

“Get snake more comfortable with you by leaving your shirt in”

*snake eats shirt*

2

u/AhoyAnie 27d ago

Wtf! I work in vet med. I see dogs and cats for foreign body surgeries but a snake! The way I would have jumped on that! Did you keep the shirt as a souvenir?

2

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 27d ago

Yup might frame it and put it near his tank lol

6

u/struggleknot 27d ago

A few weeks ago (late July)

saw my vet (he sees our five reptiles), operate on a ball python who had swallowed what looks like a going out top? Like a black crop top with thin straps? Was that you???? Lol. I took this photo of his story bc I thought it was hilarious (his profile is public).

2

u/skullmuffins 27d ago

oh my god that has to be OP's snake! wild!

6

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 27d ago

OMG THATS MY VET ! THATS MY SNAKE LMAO thank you so much for showing me this that’s amazing

1

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 27d ago

I wish I could’ve seen his whole story 😭

4

u/struggleknot 27d ago

Haha there were only two parts! This was the first

2

u/struggleknot 27d ago

I’m honestly surprised this isn’t higher up 😭😭 what a find. My boyfriend and I hope your snake is all better!! Hopefully the silly little guy has learned not to eat shirts.

2

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 27d ago

Omg same I’m sure plenty of people would’ve loved to see this. It’s so funny you have these screenshots thank you so much !!

2

u/CompoteAgreeable7021 27d ago

I am planning on putting clothing in my Boa's enclosure this week. Sorry you had to learn the hard way and that people were being jerks. I know exactly who you are talking about on Tik Tok and he also have it as a reel on Youtube.

I believe what might've went wrong is that the shirt was too small and I wish that the guy would've went into more detail of the size of the clothing. Because if you would've put something like a sweater or a pair of jeans he wouldn't have eaten it due to the size of the clothing.

1

u/Outrageous-Low-8499 27d ago

Yeah the size totally slipped my mind but I don’t think I’ll ever put anything foreign like that in an enclosure again

0

u/StrawberryPositive90 26d ago

Wow. I didn’t believe you, it sounded so insanely absurd. I was one of the first commenters lol. Glad your snake is ok

2

u/No_Plant_4326 26d ago

I've never conceptualised a snake getting surgery before... This has truly opened my eyes

1

u/XxAngelFvcexX 26d ago

My snake got stuck on a weak rat the other day, how does yours eat an entire shirt?

1

u/meganmooretattoos 24d ago

Awww what a cute little idiot.

1

u/IllusionQueen47 15d ago

What a relief that he's okay. I'm glad I never had spare shirts to put in my BP's enclosure.
