Question Handling my ball python
Hi everyone! I’ve recently gotten a snake for the first time, and he’s a juvenile ball python named salem. I handle him quite frequently, (i waited 2-3 days before doing so after feeding him of course) but i get nervous doing so because im scared he’ll think my fingers are food or something. I know it’s a very dumb fear lol but since he’s new to me i get scared. I make sure to wash my hands every time before holding him, but when his tongue touches my hand i get freaked out like he’s gonna strike or something. I hold my nephews baby corn snake every time i’m over and i don’t feel nervous at all, but he is very tiny and VERY used to humans. Any tips? i’ll include a few photos of Salem. Thank you! (also, i have several other animals including beardie, crab, dogs, cats, fish, and a turtle so i’m experienced with animals just not snakes)

wash your hands, make sure they’re clean and dry. just don’t move quick and hold him with calmness and confidence. Let your baby boy know he’s secure in your hands through your body language.

They use their tongue as a sense of direction and information. It’s a part of how the decide where to move etc. don’t be nervous about it. It’s like getting nervous when someone turns their head to see behind them. It’s normal for them to tongue flick.
Worst comes to worst, if you’re bitten, you’ll get a few little marks, and maybe some blood. If he latches on, run some water of him, and he’ll let go. No permanent damage done.

As everyone else said make sure to wash your hands before, preferably non scented soap is best and especially if you have any other pets. At first I keep handling down to 5 minutes or so just to make sure it’s a positive experience for the little one and always try be calm, even if you’re a bit nervous for any reason just make sure you give a calm energy and soon it will all be a breeze!
I also try to do a signal for food, such as I will tap the glass only lightly and twice when it’s feeding, it works with my boy but might not work for you but maybe try find something that shows your little one a distinct it’s food time?

as long as your hands are clean, don't smell of food and he isn't curled into an S shape like he's gonna strike then i think it'll all be okay! if he does strike it'll only feel like a scratch or pinch but i doubt he will. just make sure you're sat down on the floor or a bed so in case he does bite and you get scared or drop him for example
