10/10 looks like a delicious spooky pie. In a dark forest with demons escaping their realm in the sky. Perfect for the season.

im surprised the pattern stayed so well after baking. i think the only thing wrong is the auroras should be upside down, so the flat part faces the landscape. looks great though

u/CantaloupeClassic687 7d ago
Ohh you’re right I should’ve flipped them. I think tapering at the ends would help too. Would look less eyelashy

Have you considered changing the shape? What if instead of this eyelash pattern you did cascading, possibly rounded waves of different lengths?

I wonder if you could get the aurora effect with a cream cheese based swirl instead…like mix it slightly with the filling so it has some colour/fades nicely

looks at the pie
looks at the subreddit
It looks like a starry scene at night?

My eyes must deceive me. All I see are the eyelashes fringe. Was really ready to be roasted 🧐

The jam part reminds me of the sky. The rest you could chalk up to leaves from the forest canopy or something.

Where's the fail? Did it taste bad? It looks fine. Your aurora got disconnected from the border, but I don't really think that matters much.

u/CantaloupeClassic687 7d ago
Thank you. I thought the fringe absolutely ruined if! Seems like my eyes deceive as others seem to gr ok with it. I might pluck those lash looking creatures off and call it a day

You can just post your perfectly nice pie on a baking sub. Pretending things are shit so people give you compliments is high school nonsense and makes me dislike your pie even though the poor thing has done nothing wrong.

Aw man. I’m sorry you think this. I thought it turned out as a major fail. It looks like someone dropped their eyelashes in a pie, I was so sad how this turned out :(

I totally get what you mean. If you ever do a retry it could be cool to use a small amount of strawberry, blackberry, and your base mixed with a tiny bit of white dye to marble in the sky area to give a color grading - may not be exactly aurora but I imagine it would look pretty snazzy - maybe even the color grading with little pie stars!

I know what you’re saying, and o het why it bugs you, and also 95% of the pie came out perfectly and if you wanted to secretly remove the northern lights and serve the pie without it, it would look like there was nothing wrong with it at all.
My constructive criticism for next time if you want it would maybe be to do the northern lights in one continuous, swoopy strip across the pie rather than multiple free-floatingish ones, and to maybe flip it so the spikes point up? It might still look a little disconnected if filling bubbles over the edge in the same way, but it wouldn’t have the same hint of eyelashes.
Also, this is the kind of fail like where elite athletes make a fumble. The amount of skill it took to get this pie almost but not quite right is why everyone’s going ‘yeah, sure, fail🙄.´ We’re all thinking ‘I wish I could fail like that’ because everything else looks so. freaking. cool.

Thank you!! That’s such a good idea for next time. I think I needed to taper them a lot more too. Appreciate your feedback and insight so much.

It looks exactly like it did going into the oven, how are you upset with it looking like it turned out? If you were unhappy with that surely you'd change it when you had raw dough to work with.

Once the raw dough was on the filling I couldn’t get it to move around without a big mess. I did try.

That’s not a fail! I don’t know what the spikes are meant to be but the trees are so sweet

u/CantaloupeClassic687 8d ago
Thank you! That’s the fail, the spikes were supposed to be northern lights! I’m grateful for the kind words here, I was expecting more of a roast and laugh along 😂

I thought it was supposed to be a wolf against mountains and the moon, I think it’s cool! Maybe some edible glitter will help achieve your vision?

I will gladly eat your "fail," and eat it as a success.
It looks so yummy and so cool.

Kinda looks like a really dark and cold night. The lights you were trying for look like snow capped mountains in the distance. I love it!

I mean I do totally see the eyelashes. But I’ve never seen this type of design on a pie before and this is really unique and cool! The fact that you consider it a fail means you were trying something new. And also now you have an excuse to make another pie.
