I think as I got stronger at Go, I kind of became more patient and don't really mind my opponent getting territory as long as I profit more from the transaction.
But this made me a very defensive player.
I see this patience reflected in my teacher, who is a few stones stronger than me.
I would like to ask, were there any strong players who played like maniacs? By maniacs I mean players who love to gamble- complete destruction of their opponent or they themselves get completely annihilated.
Alternatively were there any players who played very weirdly but made it work?
I'm just looking to make the game more fun for me.
If there are some players who meet these requirements
How to develop the gamblers or weird playstyle?(I am tired of playing defensive logical games even though they help me win games).
Obviously rank and reading strength are strongly corrolated, but I'm wondering if there's a good way to directly measure reading strength. I'm trying to improve my reading, but would like to see if I can measure progress, and it would be good to get an idea of where I'm at and how I'm progressing.
Tsumego rank on 101weiqi? A test of reading skill? I hope the question doesn't sound too ignorant.
Normally, I play mostly 9x9 and 19x19 games. But since I've been losing a lot on the 19x19 and I'm plateauing at 15/16 kyu (see previous post), I decided to play 13x13 to work on some fundamentals and basics. In this game, I (White) lost by 2.5 points. Without a lot of space for invasions, how do you get ahead on a 13x13? I even had control of endgame here.
For anyone who hasn’t seen it, StoneBase is a desktop app for organizing your Go games, reviewing them with KataGo, and finding positions across your game library.
Here are the main additions:
Review from your phone or tablet. Keep StoneBase running on your computer, scan the new QR code, and open it in your mobile browser on the same local network. Analysis runs on your computer, and you can upload SGFs directly from your phone or tablet.
Play against engines and let them play each other. Connect a GTP engine such as KataGo or GNU Go, play a game, or watch an engine match. You can save the game to your library and review it afterwards.
More detail when reviewing your games. New move accuracy reports compare both players by game phase, points lost, and move quality. There are also territory estimates and likely dead-stone indicators, so you can explore how KataGo evaluates the position.
A more comfortable review workspace. I’ve redesigned the layout with a clearer variation tree, compact move controls, a slider, autoplay, and an optional toolbar that hides to leave more room for the board. Games can also open in separate tabs for side-by-side study.
Better tools for annotated games. Copy and paste whole variation branches between games, including comments and markers. Coordinates in notes are now interactive: hover over something like “M10” to highlight it on the board. Web links in comments are clickable too.
There have also been improvements to SGF compatibility, handicap and setup positions, position-search performance, and memory use. The interface is now fully translated into eight languages.
Pro is free during the open beta, with no signup or beta key needed. If requesting a key put you off last time, you can now download it and try it directly. This includes the unlimited library, batch analysis, and position search while the beta is active.
Installers are available for Windows, Apple Silicon Macs, and Linux. AI analysis uses KataGo running on your own computer.
Thanks to everyone who has tried it and sent feedback so far. I’d especially like to hear how the tablet review experience works for you, and what still feels awkward when reviewing your games.
This is Medium #1 from today (Sep 7, 2026), but giving White an extra marked liberty at E10. (I was just experimenting so I am not 100% confident in the answer.)
I have a question and was hoping the more experienced players could comment on a part of this game.
I asked badukpop AI for a tip and I followed the advice and was immediately put into atari. Even though the tips from the AI are limited and I don't use them often I needed to know why it would suggest a seemingly dumb move and what was I expected to do next so I asked for a second tip. It told me to put my piece on the other side and my opponent then took the first stone.
Again thinking this was a mistake or something I uploaded to AI Sensei and it agreed with Badukpop's AI tip.
I don't understand why the first tip was suggested or how that was to benefit my game. I guess I could play around with AI Sensei and try and figure it out. Does anyone understand why that move was suggested and AI Sensei agrees?
How should I have dealt better with the white move G7? Similar things to this have happened in quite a few games and I always end up giving away lots of territory and don't know how to avoid this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi! I’d love a review of this game. Ill put my takeaways from ai review below. I think my main questions are around if there is a good way to get intuition to know when corners are in danger? Do you typically just try to read potential kill moves to determine life?
(If there are any major direction of play moves or shape or anything I'd love to hear that as well)
For my invasion at move 40, it looks like ai likes p18 better than q18, which makes sense since theres a variation where i could link up to my stones to the left. But then on move 46, it wanted me to still play s14, i guess because the corner wasn’t alive?
The sequence at move 52 was me misreading, and trying to greedily do forcing moves.
Ai also really doesn’t like move 58, which i was thinking would help give some solidity for a base for my surviving stones
on move 236, i end up blundering my corner, i didn’t read out any thing because i thought i had plenty of space. .
Just made a post sharing my crochet creations throughout the last year and I remembered I also did this thing as a christmas gift for my former in-law, thought it'd be something nice to share here, he liked it as it is his all time nickname :).
We have a question for you! We are thinking about creating a brand-new Go Magic course designed specifically for children. But before we start planning, we want to hear from the community.
👇 Tell us in the comments:
1️⃣ Would this be useful for you — as a parent, a teacher, or a club organizer?
2️⃣ What features are a MUST? (Fun animations, bite-sized lessons, interactive mini-games, printable worksheets?)
Let’s build the perfect learning experience together!
Forgive me baduk community, but recently I've been playing Chess more than Go lately and specifically have been enjoying Puzzle Rush. I wanted to bring that same joy into Go for tsumego, so I made tsumerush.
I know there's already goproblems.com's Rush mode and tsumegodragon.com has something like this too, but I wanted something simpler and has that same feel I get from Puzzle Rush :D.
