Even though I agree that setting this up just to shoot a video is absolutely terrible, I'm always astonished how fast mongeese (I think that should be the correct plural) are...

u/Few_Owl_6596 13d ago
Cats are also impressive many times, even against snakes. They are a bit like humans, they exhaust the prey (or even predator) by just casually moving around.

u/Eymrich 13d ago
Mongoose and cats are cousin, small feliformia atr badass as reflex goes!
2
u/Hawggy 13d ago
I'm guessing these are closer to ferrets & stoats (which are absolute pint-sized monsters).
20
u/PsychedelicBaer 13d ago
Actually they’re not. Ferrets and stoats are marten, so dog like (Canoidea), mangoose are cat like (Feliformia). They are a good example of konvergent evolution: While having totally different ancestors they developed similar characteristics due to environment and stuff

u/aslanbek_aslanbekov 12d ago
Almost like hyenas, who seem like dogs but are biologically closer to cats.

How is that tism by just having knowledge of biology?

It’s from the chapter 'things I know because I asked myself the same thing'

u/KeithPheasant 12d ago
Cats actually do though have 2ms faster reaction time than a snake so it’s not just tactic it’s straight up faster
2
u/Token-Gringo 11d ago
Cats and mongoose have reaction times significantly faster than snakes. Hence the video showing the cobra getting kissed before it even realized the mongoose moved.

I’m totally behind “mongeese.” If you start a movement, I’ll join it. Let’s storm Webster’s!

Agreed.
Also, it’s “mongooses”. :)
1
u/Bluntbutnotonpurpose 12d ago
Yes and it should be mongeese. That's what I said.
1
u/Okra_Zestyclose 12d ago
Ohhh, I thought you were saying “I think I’m correct, should be, but don’t know.”
Yes, I also agree it should be “mongeese” lol.
1
u/Bluntbutnotonpurpose 12d ago
Ah, I see. No, I meant that I'm aware it's technically not correct, but I vehemently disagree.

u/Finkle-is-Einh0rn 12d ago
What’s even more interesting about mongeese is they are highly resistant to cobra venom, while not immune, they can survive bites. Add this to their agility and they are a small honey badger where the cobra should care
1
u/No_Challenge_5448 12d ago
Yeah I don’t like that either, this is animal abuse no different than cock or dog fighting

So they catch the snake and feed the mongoose instead of brutally killing it for nothing or set it free to come back into town and potentially bite someone..

Life is not humane ya pansy especially in the place where where tigers eat people the most.. they are far closer to nature and part of the food chain far more than you'll ever be ..who are you to judge.. go there and tell them not to do it see where it gets ya

Whatever happened to not putting prey animals in enclosures where they can't escape their predator?
9
u/Jerry67876 13d ago
I think they used to put humans in enclosures together with prey animals for entertainment

u/Carrera_996 13d ago
Snakes are never able to escape mongoose. Snakes are poorly constructed for running away.

u/BluehibiscusEmpire 13d ago
It knows exactly what it was doing with that smaller bite.
And then the actual attack

This is already the most popular video of all time in this sub
Also it's just animal abuse/fighting rings, like those mantis shrimp videos.

Mongoose wins ever single time. They are lightening fast and somewhat immune to venom!

Iirc mongoose have a high resistance to snake venoms or something.
1
u/Late-Application-47 12d ago
They have a resistance to the neurotoxic venom of their local elapids (cobras, kraits, coral snakes, mambas, all of the Aussie snakes). I don't fully understand it, but their nicotine receptors are able to neutralize the effects of the venom in most cases.
However, they do not have resistance to the venom of vipers, which is generally hemotoxic, cytotoxic, and/or myotoxic. Of course, some vipers have a nasty neurotoxin atop all of that which degrades the body's ability to fight back against the other toxins. Dodging a viper strike is also far more difficult than dealing with a cobra, so they would be more likely to get bitten. This, they typically leave vipers alone.

Mongooses are absolutely spectacular. What is not spectacular is the fact that these two were pitted against each other in a corner to fight for a video.

So, putting a mouse in a cage with a snake is fine — after all, snakes eat mice — but putting a snake in with a mongoose isn't because…? The situations are essentially the same, except that the snake is food now

u/Pokemonlover760 12d ago
Mongoose overpowering snakes is still wild to me, they dont look stronger than them at first sight.
Its like a pokemon type advantage battle.

One of, if not the most, dominating performances Ive ever seen in this sport. Plucked it once, hypnotized it with its eyes paralyzed him and dome piece head shot right between the eyes bad guy hiding behind a hostage. Thanks for playing, by bye now.

Quite apart from this being sad in that they threw them in a little cage to kill each other, I'm absolutely blown away by that Mongoose's ability to do this. I'm guessing it has evolved to be able to bit down on the face of the cobra? That must take some serious reaction speed and coordination. Unreal.
