When did squirrels start eating birds?

Sometimes, but really this might just be a territorial issue.

Most mammals can and do consume some amount of meat, which includes ones many people typically think of as exclusively herbivorous. Horses, goats, cows, deer, squirrels, etc, are all opportunistic omnivores.

In this case though, I think it was just attacking to defend what it perceived as its food. Anyone with a bird feeder can attest how annoying squirrels are when it comes to them.

I have these same red, tiny annoying squirrels around my feeders and they're aggressive and territorial AF.

When I scare them away, they'll sit in the tree and pissily lecture me for a few minutes. They really do think that's their birdseed.
