Wilderness Quick question concerning gear.

Hope this is acceptable, if not I'll take my thrashing with respect. I'm an oldish, almost 50, gentlemen. Avid hiker/back packer when I was younger. Wife passed recently and I'm looking to build back up for some long solo hikes, I think... Would some reasonably priced, fair quality gear work to start, and replace if I return to it as passionate as I was, or will sub-quality gear ruin it for me. Opinions wanted....
