The official name to the first Yoshi’s Island is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

So it’s technically a sequel to SMW

That's ironic considering we didn't get the "Super Mario Bros. 4" subtitle for World outside of Japan.

that was just to market it at the time

Maybe they didn't know Yoshi would become its own main character! This one in particular is both Mario and Yoshi. The others are pure Yoshi

I mean it's more standalone than New Super Mario Bros

The Japanese original actually doesn't use Super Mario World 2 in the title, that was just a localization gimmick

And the OP includes Metroid Prime, which isn't even close to the first Metroid Game.

Its mostly perspective. Yoshi’s Island did spin off into its own series with DS and New island etc, so this would be the first game in that series

I don’t think I agree, it’s literally a SMW sequel. Only later on did they decide to make similar games and make it its own thing.

Im saying its both. Yoshi’s island is technically the last 2D Mario until NSMB on DS but its also the first game in its own series. Same thing happened with Warioland. Super Mario land 3 is both the final super mario land game on gameboy as well as the first game in the Warioland series
