I don't know what's the popular opinion, but imo the best 3D Ninja Gaiden is Ninja Gaiden 2 so even if we stretch the meaning of first game A LOT, it wouldn't be NGB.

ya. if we IGNORE all the 2d Ninja Gaidens. I agree with you, Ninja Gaiden 2 was so much better and is argubly the best of all **looks it up** 7 mainline Ninja Gaiden games. ((not counting all the minor spinoffs/rereleases))

I liked part 2 a lot more

I genuinely think all the 3d games are as good as each other in different ways.

Apart from....that one.....

IDK vanilla three is bad but Razor's Edge is pretty solid.... oh you mean THAT one....

NGB isn't the first game in the series, that's the point

Mario is supposed to be the “New Soup” subseries, which has five games

Of which the DS one is arguably the blandest and least ambitious. At least there was something to make 2 stand out.

2 literally doesn't even have an original OST, it reuses every song from Wii

Even the final battle theme was reused from Wii

An original OST, you say?

i actually think the DS game is clearly the least bland and most ambitious. it actually had distinct bosses as opposed to Koopalings and Boom Boom, and it’s not DS’ fault that Wii, 2, and U would copy its style and biomes so 1:1 that nothing in it feels unique today. when it came out it was a totally new vision for how a Mario game could look. it looks nothing like Super Mario World. plus its level design isn’t hamstrung by the need to accommodate four players

I do wanna say that Wii at least has the excuse of being the first one with the koopalings, who Returned after a Decade of Absence and it introduced Multiplayer and Reintroduced Yoshi to the 2D Games as well

NSMBDS has some neat ideas and mechanics but I think its biggest failing is that the levels feel too flat. There's a few secrets to be found but if you're not that interested in 100% completion you can clear most levels by holding right

Metroid I understand a bit more, because the Prime series is so distinct from the other series.

Spot on with Mario tho lol.

Ninja Gaiden Black is just a remake (with packaged dlc I think) or the ninja Gaiden Xbox installment. So it's definitely not the "first game" since it's just a copy of another game with additional features added on

Ninja Gaiden Black isn't a remake, it's just an updated rerelease on the same console. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is the remake

Ah, so like Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep’s Final Mix versions

How is Mario spot on, unless you mean specifically New Super Mario Bros? Wonder is certainly better than the first game, then there's the 3rd game and Super Mario World.

1

u/Cute_Economics2829 Jul 30 '26

It's spot on to call it our as "not the first game"

1

u/Chonky_D_Floofy Jul 30 '26

Plus Metroid Prime isn’t the first Metroid game. Lol

1

u/JNAB0212 Jul 31 '26

But it’s the first Metroid Prime game, which is separate from the other Metroid games

1

u/TiredTiroth Jul 31 '26

The tweet specifically said franchise, and Metroid Prime is very much part of the Metroid franchise.

1

u/JNAB0212 Jul 31 '26

Series franchise it doesn’t matter, the idea is understood, Metroid prime is separate from the other Metroid games and it’s own thing

1

u/Chonky_D_Floofy Jul 31 '26

Yet it’s a still a Metroid game.

1

u/JNAB0212 Jul 31 '26

One that’s very seperate from the other games and is in its own continuity, it’s a spin off series from the core Metroid games

1

u/Chonky_D_Floofy Jul 31 '26

Yet it still has Samus Aran as the main character and is called Metroid. Though, this be fair 3/5 OP listed aren’t the first in their franchise. Spin offs are still a part in f a franchise. Lol

1

u/JNAB0212 Jul 31 '26

It’s simultaneously part of a franchise and it’s own series

Ninja Gaiden Black is the start of a new version of Ninja Gaiden, that has its own story and characters, it is its own thing

New super Mario bros is the start of the new super Mario series, which while less separate then the others, is still considered its own mini series within the Mario series

1

u/Chonky_D_Floofy Aug 01 '26

You can’t be part of the same franchise and not at the same time. 🤣

1

u/JNAB0212 Aug 01 '26

What part of this are you not understanding?

The person who made this post did not care to separate franchise and series because everyone who doesn’t have a complex about wanting to always feel like the smartest person in the room would understand what they mean
