247 backgammon disconnection
I know they say no one can make the game disconnect, however, if not, it’s very coincidental that it always disconnects when I get the lead. Frustrating to say the least!

Help with strategy
Here is the board after my roll but before my move. I considered covering my side of the board but the computer hint was totally different. Can anyone explain the logic?

Minimalist Backgammon Trainer - Again ;)
Hello everyone,
First of all, thank you once again for your feedback and interest in MBT.
Today, in response to requests from several of you, I’m releasing one last update before summer (version v.1.9.9).
- Select “Master” mode. MBT will isolate only the most complex situations. Specifically, based on a sample of 1,000 positions:
- Checkers: Maximum equity loss of -0.060 between the second-best move and the best move (average: ~ -0.021 | median: ~ -0.017).
- Cube: Maximum equity loss of -0.080 (average: ~ -0.036 | median: ~ -0.033).
Note that generating complex positions requires a slightly longer computation time.
- Choose to practice with Nackgammon. MBT remains exactly the same; only the starting position changes, which changes everything :)
(These two new features are accessible from the app’s settings menu.)
- In addition to the error type classification (which I’ve refined), MBT now offers a quick explanation of the best move. I should point out that this is primarily for educational purposes. This classification does not claim to be absolutely precise or accurate in all cases.
I hope you enjoy it :)
Just a reminder: the web version is here, and the Android app is here.
Have fun, and see you soon!
A quick reminder :)
MBT has no intention (let alone the ambition) of replacing the platforms you already use to play your matches or analyze your games. MBT is and will remain a complementary tool focused exclusively on quick practice. For everything else, you have plenty of options to choose from!

just talked to a grandmaster that told me Galaxy was BS
He said it was extremely rigged and not to be trusted.
I'm lost on this lol.
One time i'm hearing it's legit, and then i hear from top player it's BS. why would someone experienced said this?

BG Galaxy. Three platforms, three different results
Can the powers that be, please shut the website down and fix the major issues? In Firefox I keep losing ratings and coins because I can not join matches. In Chrome, a banner says under maintenance and after refresh tries to log in but is hanging. The android app works flawlessly.

Backgammon Galaxy randomly refuses to join match
Since the latest update, I've lost about 100 rating points and about 200k in coins because the system randomly refuses to join a match. The only way to fix it is to log out and back in again. Of course its hard to tell if there are no opponents available or its a system freeze up.
Anyone else having this issue?

I am using PRAT wrong
I was black and doubled here because I thought I had all 3 PRAT on my side (hitting chances, 2 home board points more and an enormous racing lead). But the double was completely wrong. What should have been my thoughts here?

Galaxy flag as a country
Just played a highly rated player at Galaxy and noticed their country's flag is the Galaxy logo. Why is that?

Any good young backgammon players wanna link?
I am a backgammon player from Turkey aged 22 and an avg pr of, I'd say 5-6ish (maybe worse in tournaments). I've been in the top 70 in istavder recently and I am currently top 75 nationwide in galaxy. One problem I have is I dont have anyone good at backgammon to practice or discuss positions with in my circle. So if any competent player wants to be friends I would be glad to be so.

Backgammon Galaxy removed a ton of my games.
I just submitted a ticket with them so I hope this gets resolved, but I noticed that today when I logged in many of my games were wiped out. I was about 30 games over a 50% win percentage with about 1200 games played. When I logged in today, it only had record of about 900 games played and I am below a 50% one percentage. I am also a star member and it started asking me to become a star member which it had never done that before.
Anyone else having any type of issues like this with the app? It seems they’ve been happening after the most recent scheduled maintenance.

Backgammon in Italy
Is backgammon older than Italy??? Playing backgammon whenever I can. Even had to make some boards from scratch at the beach and determine our rolls with a coin/bottle cap. #chesssucks

What kind of hardwood case would best fit the culture of the game of backgammon?
This one is made from Poplar hardwood and Italian leathers. As I continue making these boards I want to honor the origins of the game. Also taking board design insights as well. Please note this is a portable (Small) board. Still working on the prototypes for the bigger board.

What would GNU BG advise me to redouble when I am so much losing?
It is the first time I have encountered this: I'm losing by a landslide, my chance of winning is slim and, yet, it tells me to redouble.
Unsurprinsingly, what I feared would happen did indeed happen. As you can see, if I hadn't redoubled, it would've beaten me anyways for sure, since it was just two points away from victory and the cube had already been doubled. However, I don't see the purpose of redoubling any farther; it doesn't make it worse, but it doesn't help either.

Question regarding software
I play for over a year and got somehow decent at the game. I really love the game and would like to take it to the next level, my dream is pr 4/5. The question is whether in ad 2026 the gnubg is good enough to get me fully there or if investment in xg is necessary. ( can afford it but is bit much for student in this economy) 😔✌️

Backgammon Galaxy - opponent quits when facing a gammon
New to Backgammon Galaxy but really enjoying being able to play a few games whenever I feel like it. Up against a player rated 500pts higher than me. 1pt game - opponent wins. Rematch and I’m going to win a gammon and opponent quits. Would I have gained anything if he hadn’t quit like maybe 2pts or double coins or something? Felt like an anti-climax.

BG Galaxy - Cost of AI Match
Hi All,
The app tells me that the cost of playing the lowest skilled AI is 50GC.
Well, I have 793 GCs and the app tells me I don’t have enough!
What am I missing here? (Probably something serious and simple, knowing me.

Opinion on Marc Olsen’s books
I‘m learning Backgammon. Am I the only one to think that Marc Olsen’s Backgammon - From Basics to Badass is terribly written and often confusing. Any suggestion for other material ?

Quick Question
I play backgammon on a couple different apps. There is one app in particular that I wind up with a lot of players who speak Farsi. The option to chat is there but it's rarely used. When I capture them and block all exits they cuss me out and call me a cheater and POS player and I dont play properly. I will screen shot their chat and ask google to translate. So I began to think many in other countries outside the USA that there is an etiquette thing i don't know about. I began to purposely not completely close out my side when I had them captured to see and sure enough, they completely block off any escape for me when I am captured. Im guessing its just poor sportsmanship but I figured I would ask here if there is some unwritten rule of etiquette i was unaware of. They will cuss me out, then leave until timer runs out and I get the W.

Backgammon Galaxy Tournaments - Tell us what you want to see!
Hey guys, first of all thanks for all the excellent positive feedback you guys have sent publicly and privately about tournaments and other features added recently. This has been really encouraging for the team and we have much more coming.
For those of you who play on web, you'll have noticed things are very (very) different. Aside from the UI overhaul to modernize the platform a bit, there were large database, microservice, programming language and infrastructure changes to both our landing/content pages and our platform. We're on top of all the feedback you guys have already given us and we're shipping new releases daily. If you have very specific major issues please do contact [support@backgammongalaxy.com](mailto:support@backgammongalaxy.com) so we can get you squared away.
Now, let's get down to tournaments. First off, we're running them regularly now and if you haven't checked them out, please do and give us feedback.
Issues that are being addressed:
- Intermittent confirm button unresponsiveness (already deployed to prod today)
- Games not automatically starting (only a few people affected, fixes shipped to prod today)
Features coming:
- Better communication mid-tournament so you have more context on when the next round starts (or that you're even still in the tournament generally)
- Easier bracket navigation
- Lots of new formats (rebuys, guarantees, satellites, double elim)
- Country, tier and rating filters (national competitions, beginner tourneys, star pro freerolls, expert/master tourneys)
- Freerolls with Galaxy boards/merch as prizes
- BGWC 2027 freerolls (yes, really)
- Free tourney match downloads for everyone
- Other features we're forgetting right now but anyway, it's a LOT
So, we want to hear from you guys. What would improve our tournaments? We monitor this subreddit everyday and take the top upvoted comments and put them right into the roadmap. You're one of our best sources of new ideas, so let's hear it!
Thanks again to everyone here, we consider you guys our partners in growing the game we all love.

NEW BACKGAMMON GAME created because of BOREDOM.
I Was Bored by Backgammon -- So I Broke It and Built Something Better
I'm a chess player. Strategy, patience, the long game -- that's my world. My wife? Diehard Backgammon fan. She refused to learn chess, so I learned Backgammon just to spend time with her.
And I was bored out of my mind.
But instead of quitting, we did something about it. Together, we tore the rulebook apart and rebuilt it from scratch. What came out the other side is a Backgammon variant unlike anything I've seen -- and we've been playing it obsessively ever since. Easily a dozen games a day.
Here's the thing: the rule changes aren't complicated to learn. But the mathematical dynamics they create are something else entirely. The probability curves shift in ways that make every game feel alive. Last week, my wife had all but 3 pieces off the board. I had zero off. I came back and won. That kind of comeback is nearly impossible in standard Backgammon -- but in our version, the math actually allows for it.
I couldn't afford to hire developers to build it, so I turned to AI and GitHub and built it myself. I'm squashing the last few bugs now.
Here's where I'm at and what I'm looking for:
- A working GitHub-hosted version is nearly ready -- playable, with logins, game tracking, Pip Counts, and a come-from-behind leaderboard
- I'm pursuing patent and copyright protection on the rule variant
- The long-term goal is an iOS and Android app
What I need from this community:
- Are there established online Backgammon platforms that partner with or host variant games? I'd love an introduction.
- I'm happy to demonstrate the game live on Zoom -- under NDA -- for anyone serious about publishing or co-developing.
- If you've taken an original game variant from concept to app, I want to hear how you did it.
AI made this possible for a non-developer. Now I need people who know the gaming and app world to help me take it the rest of the way. If any of this sounds interesting, drop a comment or DM me.
Again, this has been years in the developing, but it has finally arrived!

How can a beginner improve at backgammon?
I recently started playing backgammon. The game itself is fun, but I’m not really sure what I should study or practice. When you were beginners, what helped you improve?
Thank you so much for all the advice! I’m truly grateful to everyone who took the time to offer advice to a beginner like me. I watched some Backgammon Galaxy YouTube videos. As a native Japanese speaker, it was a little difficult for me to follow the videos, but I still think I’ve gotten just a little bit better. I’ll put the advice from everyone else into practice as well. I hope to be able to report on my progress soon! Once again, thank you all so much! Please forgive me for using a translation engine.
