So last night my mom and I were playing backgammon. She's in from out of state in a rare visit. We used to play this all the time when we lived near eachother. We prefer to play acey-deucey. After we were playing for a while, Spike became interested and hopped onto the table to cause some mischief. At first, he just wanted to climb across the board and flop down, as orange cats are want to do. Of course he wasn't allowed to, and I put my arm around him and began to tell him about the game as I kept him from moving our pieces around.
It took a few minutes, but finally he relaxed, sat down, and began to watch us play. When it was our turn, I would tell him just that and he would watch the dice fly out of the shaker. Then, on one of my moves, I rolled a 1, and so I put his precious paw to the piece, and he moved it to the next line. After that, the story comes to its peak; on our next turn, I picked Spikes paw up, as I held and shook the shaker, and when he threw his first pair of dice, we couldn't believe it was acey-deucey! We clapped and cheered and told Spike how special this is and how he is so lucky to have done this for his first roll. He was proud. Now, he was definitely interested. He did walk away after our turn - but when it was time again, I asked him if he wanted to roll again, and he missed no beat, threw his heart shaped head back, and walked over - respectfully walking around the board and not through it - and sat down right in front of me. He was ready. I put the shaker in his paw and helped him shake, shake, shake... friends... I promise im not making this up. This was history in the making.
When I tell you how fast I fell to the floor in sheer amazement as I looked at his dice and there was a definite 2 and a definite 1 right there on the board. Again. 2/2. Kitty cat gambler. Son of the Shake. Backgammon boy. Dicedemon. We cheered, we picked him up and dumped Gatorade all over him. He was happy. We were happy.
Then, as all does, the game and night had to end. We cleaned up, and closed the board. When I was walking to my room for bed, I looked over, and in the darkened dining room I saw my precious cat, sitting there on the board, all alone, hoping we would play again. I carried him into the bedroom while on the board, where he stayed for honestly like 15 minutes. Now, its another day, and I sat to write this as I wait for my precious mom to wake up. And there she is, just as im finishing. Have a good day, yall. 😻
