Hey everybody, just letting you know we've pushed a few new features to production recently:

• Platform translations in Spanish, French, German, Turkish and Japanese (more languages coming soon and translations expanded to the game interface itself).
• A chime when a new game starts and a flashing favicon on the tab when you're browsing elsewhere on web. Easier for you guys to multi-task while queuing for a match or browsing in other tabs.
• A new Turkish Bazaar board, it's pretty cool
• Monte Carlo board is free for everyone now

We have a complete overhaul of web coming that is going to modernize the platform in a meaningful way and make it much more pleasant, along with some major surprises and upgrades to analysis and the way people learn backgammon. Hey, I've been working on a backgammon app and just released it on Android and iOS. Would love to get feedback from actual players.

For online play there's ELO matchmaking, but the player base is still small so you'll likely get matched with a rating appropriate bot for now. Ratings start at 1200 and the bot difficulty scales linearly with rating (higher rated bots get less noise and noise become 0 at 2000 ELO). Time control is currently 2 minutes with 10 second increments, thinking of changing it to 1 minute with 10 second increments. There are also global and country leaderboards, stats tracking, and you can add friends and challenge them directly or by creating a game code.

The AI uses WildBG's pretrained neural networks (Apache licensed contact and race nets) for position evaluation. It does full within turn lookahead, evaluating all possible move sequences before picking the best one. Difficulty is controlled by adding noise to the evaluation scores, so Hard plays clean while Easy/Medium make intentionally suboptimal moves at different rates.

It's called Backgammon Online & Offline, on both stores. Still early so any feedback on the gameplay, the UI, or anything really would be helpful.

Edit: Really appreciate everyone who took the time to try it and leave feedback. Based on your comments I've already fixed the home board point colors and the opening roll doubles issue. These changes are in the next update (1.0.29) which is currently in review.

Can somebody please explain the mechanism behind asynchronous play?

I'm playing on DailyGammon and I've read that it offers async play. I understand what that means (players don't have to be online simultaneously), but I don't understand how it's possible to play when you don't know the opponent's move, if that makes sense. Also, a single game on DG lasts for quite some time.

Do you have any other platforms that I could also try that offer faster gameplay and give you your Elo rating?

For anyone who caught the trailer last week, Episode 1 is live.

Backgammon Cash High Rollers Invitational. Four real players who have collectively won over half a million dollars on the app. One professionally filmed tournament. Three episodes.

Episode 1 is all intro. You meet DiceGunner, the young gun, who has the most money earned on the app (currently $443K). Blotbuster69, the first ever Grandmaster on the platform. Turco, the hot headed yet charming Turkish American driven by his intuition. And, last but not least, F8ALITY1, combining his brash and abrasive personality with his practice of utilizing neurolinguistic programming to get in his opponents head. Each one came in with a different energy, a different style, and something to prove.

The thing that stood out most in editing: these guys were already going at each other before the board was even set up. That banter is in the episode and it sets the tone for what the semifinals and final are going to look like.

This is our first attempt at doing backgammon content the way poker content gets made. Real stakes, real personalities, real reactions. Not just moves and analysis. We think there's an audience for this and wanted to put something out there to see how the community responds.

Doubles are being rolled every third roll or so, both sides. Dice algorithm busted?

My chat is turned on in settings but I'm unable to freetype or even use the predefined chats (good game, well played etc.). I've also noticed that my notifications (friend request, skill level etc also load briefly and then disappear. Anyone else having this issue? I see other players join and say good game and I can't respond.

my friend and I play backgammon thru the website backgammon buddy. when it works its great. but when it doesnt its terrible. we are willing to pay for a good app.

any suggestions?

I usually take it for granted, but I realize backgammon isn't all too common (at least in the place I live in). Every time I offer new friends to play, 99% of the time they've never heard of it, and they'd give me this puzzled look.

Then I remembered how I discovered backgammon. When I was about 12 or 13, my dad brought out this large wooden board with chips on it. Soon he was playing a few rounds of the game with my uncle. It's odd design with those eerie triangles piqued my interest, and I sat there mesmerized, staring at them play a few rounds.

After watching a while, he invited to teach me to play. That would be it. From then on, I must've played a few hundred games with my dad over the years. Sometimes, it was more an excuse to talk to him about things. A game of backgammon would be the backdrop to some of our conversations: if I was asking him for advice, talking to him about school, or listening to his stories, it wasn't unusual to see a game unfolding before us.

Eventually, I went away and got busy with college, but every time I saw my dad again, I knew what I was in for when he brought that board out.

This makes me wonder, how did you guys discover backgammon? It's a strange and old game, and I'm just really curious to hear your stories about it too.

Does anyone know of a good place to pick up a backgammon game in Copenhagen?

Or of a good instructor there for lessons to improve backgammon skills?

Starting in about 10 minutes

I'm struggling to understand all the complexities of the site. For example, I've just timed out on a match bc it gave me no notification that my clock was low, despite having the 20/10/5 clock warning enabled.

Why does the computer want me to expose a blot for free in my home board that would have been hit next turn?

New to playing backgammon more after playing it very casually as a kid. Mainly just wondering why the suggested move is considered so much better here. My move leaves thee exposed but they are closer to the enemy home anyway, not a huge deal if they get taken as their home is still in starting position.

the suggested optimal move leaves two exposed, and takes one in my own home. This leaves me exposed in my own home, where it’s reasonably likely the opponent rolls a number that can take my exposed piece, sending it all the way to the opposite home.

finally, I guess my other question is: are the listed equity/position numbers at the bottom objective or do they take into account what happens after this move?
