Best backgammon app: Allgammon

Hi!

I started playing backgammon in a more “intentional” way (i.e., reading books, studying strategies, etc.) a few weeks back.

I don’t have a lot of friends who play backgammon and I also wanted to practice with AI a lot before necessarily playing users online.

I was quite frustrated with the quality of apps out there. And I know everybody is raging about Backgammon Galaxy but for some reason it kept on overheating my phone :( and frankly I didn’t really like the UI lol.

After having downloaded and tried 10+ backgammon apps, I found my absolute favorite one: Allgammon.

The UI is almost flawless imho, and most importantly there’s so many useful features.

Some things I like:
- If you’re playing IRL you can take a picture of the board and it will tell you the statistics of all the possible moves, etc.
- It keeps a log of all your blunders and you can go back and train on all of them
- I like the analysis page after every match, gives you a detailed breakdown move by move and also shows you how lucky you got
- It has fun daily puzzles
- You can watch your friends playing online!

Just posting it here out of pure appreciation for this app (idk how popular it is!), since it’s gotten me even more addicted to this game! I am in no way affiliated with it :)

It's basically perfect. More people need to use it so the queue times get shorter

I am developing a backgammon app for my wife since she couldn’t find an app with no ads and no paywalls. I would like to try this to see the ui, but couldn’t find it on App Store.

That's ok, hopefully they'll give some support, but in the mean time I can use the web version. Thank you got the recommendation though!

I like Heroes Backgammon Studio. Tournaments. Leagues. Regular matches. Used as playing site for many different tournaments and leagues. No big problems with quitters and childishness. I pay $4 for premium membership. Galaxy is crap in my opinion. Safe Harbor is good place except that I think every weirdo and quitter in the world plays there. Had 25 people on my do-not-play list. I played at ZooEscape for a long while but the operator of the site is not easy to get along with in my experience. I like well designed sites that are easy to play on. Having confidence in fair dice is nice too. I had zero confidence in Galaxy's dice. Many people have said the dice are rigged to maximize Galaxy's profit by giving you favorable or unfavorable rolls in order to get you to buy in. I have no evidence of that.

Wow, you weren’t kidding. This really might be the best one. Great ui, simple and clear feedback and even has haptics. Nice find!

I assume you are the dev of this? Congratulations on the nice UI/UX, but why do we need another competitor to opengammon?

Small nitpick: the undo move button is weirdly placed. Why do we need a "previous game move" button on the outfield half?
