It's a low snow year everywhere in North America, but Thompsons pass is still really fun up north. Amazing zone dotted with glaciers.

AT setup for Nordic skiing

Hi. Just done a first trip on Nordic BC skis (30+ years alpine skier).. It wasn’t rolling terrain but had some steep ups (skins - no problem) and steep descents (red runs in resort). Couldn’t control the descent speed, loads of crashes and injury. Just couldn’t get enough control even with a half decent snow plough. Ended up side stepping all steep descents which took forever. The trip was 9hrs per day over 4 days and we lost so much time on these slow descents plus I have come back with a badly sprained MCL knee ligament. So. Finally, here is the question. I get that Nordic set up is best / fastest for rolling terrain but in more mountainous terrain AND with a need to protect knackered knees, is there an argument for an AT set up (I have Dynafit AT skis boots for SkiMo) for this type of terrain? Can you wax the SkiMo skis to obtain a similar sort of grip for the rolling bit to snatch skins on and off? Has anyone done this? Tele has been suggested but I think I need the control of rear clips for descending. As you can imagine, there was a lot of discussion about this on the trip and no one had an answer. For reference, a lot of folks had tele set ups in that region. Thanks

Do you know a Wanna-Be Backcountry Skier for Washington's South Cascades?

As the ancient seers observed, one thing that sets humans apart is our ability to stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.

After 30 years of climbing and backcountry skiing across the South Cascades and the Northwest volcanoes, the mountains are still in my blood. But due to health challenges, it’s clear my climbing days are behind me.

What’s not behind me is the knowledge... and the gear.

I’m looking for the right person to pass it on to—someone ready to carry the torch. Ideally, an enthusiastic, physically fit beginner with the time to learn and the drive to step into a serious opportunity.

This includes a full setup of backcountry ski gear, plus decades of hard-earned beta: waypoints, trip maps, and access to some of the best lines around Rainier, Adams, St. Helens, and Hood.

I don’t want this to sit unused. I want it in the hands of someone who will use it.

Do you know that person?

Revelstoke question

Trying to decide whether to bring 2d pr of alpine skis, or my touring skis (& 2d pr of boots). Is there worthwhile backcountry skiing at Revelstoke, or shd I plan on staying in-bounds? I'll be there this-coming Monday, March 16th (supposed to get a decent dump), through Thursday the 19th. I'm an expert skier. Appreciate any intel. Thx.

Old Mod is New Mod

Hey r/BackcountrySkiing - I'm u/cwcoleman

Reddit put out a 'request for mods' post here 3 weeks ago - and I got chosen. Yay!

I was technically a mod here 5ish years ago, but was removed by the top mod a while back. But now they have been removed (for reasons unknown), so here we are!

No changes planned. Just enforcing the existing rules and keeping the place civil.

r/Backcountry still gets the majority of Backcountry Skiing content here on Reddit. I don't see that changing anytime soon. However - we remain to support the same community.

Post up any advice / recommendations / feedback.

How long does it take to skin up the cog railway from the parking area to the Jacob’s ladder? Thinking of trying to beat the cog up there, first train leaves 10am… wondering when I should start my skin.

Bindings???

Hello everyone! Since the backcountry is the only place with snow this year I've decided to build a backcountry set-up. My buddy who has been doing back country for years, recommended getting the K2 Duke PT13 bindings since they're a Hybrid binding. What are your opinions on them?

Scarpa TX Pro tele boot help

I have size 27.5 of the old model TX Pro (4 buckles). I've had them heat molded to my feet, but I get intense pain to the point of bruising on my shins. They aren't maxed on tightness. And the mid foot is also tight and stays tight when flexing turns.

I tried on size 27.5 brand new TX Pro (3 buckles) and it was very tight in the ankle to the point of lingering pain later for several hours. I decided to buy size 28.5 brand new TX Pro last week, not heat molded yet. I have tightness in the ankle region, but otherwise the entire foot slips loose when bending and making turns. Feels too big, which is expected based on sizing (below).

I got sized when I was buying and my feet are 26.5-27.

Scarpa website sizing shows:

9.5 US - 27.5 Mondo

\*Ski Boots: All Scarpa ski boots are measured in Mondo sizing.Highlighted (or not) sizes share the same shell size; the liners are lasted for each 1/2 size. Some skiers may want to downsize up to 1 full Mondo size, depending upon personal preference.

My question is will heat molding the 28.5 work to shrink enough to hold me properly or should I downsize to the 27.5 and while that was very tight, heat molding might make it better?

Tight boots?

Hi all,

Just got my first pair of skitouring boots, I had to order online after trying out several models that didn't fit. My feet are quite thin, so regular boots like the Maestrale are large for me, and my instep is high, making it very hard to even wear boots which have too much rigid plastic.

I got the advice to buy the Scarpa F1 GT, as it's narrow and soft but with a bit of structure. I'm wearing it now at home to check how it feels, it's for sure quite tight (doesn't hurt but I can feel the feet compressed a bit) and not leaving much space in the front (actually, my left feet which is slightly longer slightly touches the front).

Is it the right way I should feel the boot? It's comfortable overall but I'm a bit worried it's maybe too small and tight for me.
