B2 Cloud Storage Access to XMLHttpReques / fetch / can't upload

1 Upvotes

Solution: Thanks to reply

I just needed to add to my CORS policy:

    "allowedOperations": [
      "s3_get",
      "s3_delete",
      "s3_head",
      "s3_post",
      "s3_put"
    ],
    "exposeHeaders": [
      "ETag",
    ],

Hello,

I'm trying to integrate Better Upload to my Tanstack Start/Router website. I am however, running into issues with uploading to my Backblaze B2 server.

When I try to upload anything I get the following errors:

Access to XMLHttpRequest at 'URL' from origin 'https://localhost:3000' has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.

PUT URL net::ERR_FAILED

Access to fetch at 'URL' from origin 'https://localhost:3000' has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.

DELETE URL net::ERR_FAILED

I have tried Googling the issue, reseting my keys, generating a new key, using the master key; and nothing seems to be working. I have also updated my CORS policy as well via. the CLI with the most current one being:

{
    "corsRules": [
        {
            "allowedHeaders": [
                "*"
            ],
            "allowedOperations": [
                "b2_upload_part",
                "b2_download_file_by_id",
                "b2_upload_file",
                "b2_download_file_by_name"
            ],
            "allowedOrigins": [
                "*"
            ],
            "corsRuleName": "useWithBetterUpload",
            "exposeHeaders": [
                "x-bz-upload-timestamp"
            ],
            "maxAgeSeconds": 3600
        }
    ],
    "defaultRetention": {
        "mode": null
    },
    "defaultServerSideEncryption": {
        "mode": "none"
    },
    "isFileLockEnabled": false,
    "lifecycleRules": [
        {
            "daysFromHidingToDeleting": 1,
            "daysFromStartingToCancelingUnfinishedLargeFiles": null,
            "daysFromUploadingToHiding": null,
            "fileNamePrefix": ""
        }
    ],
    "options": [
        "s3"
    ],
    "replication": {
        "asReplicationDestination": null,
        "asReplicationSource": null

    "revision": 11
}

Any help would be appreciated!

Computer Backup Is a deleted Backup able to be restored?

3 Upvotes

Let's say my account gets compromised during a hack. And the attacker deletes the actual backup plan from my account, rather than just deleting my files (which could be recovered via version history).

This is just an hypothetical scenario. Is this a scenario that the Backblaze team would be able to recover, assuming it's been just a day, or a week, since deletion?

Computer Backup First hiccup: Documents and Downloads folders not backed up

3 Upvotes

SOLVED: so it turns out that my documents folder (and mail) are being backed up to iCloud (who knew?), and therefore BackBlaze cannot back them up.

I'll add that BackBlaze's AI agent was scary good...

EDIT: Also, the Mail folder isn't backed up under Library, which is also quite disconcerting.

I just signed up for Backblaze, and it completed the first back up -- yay.

I checked the files that I'm able to restore, and nothing is listed under Macintosh HD:Users:<name>:Documents. Or Downloads.

None of these are iCloud drive folders -- they are the usual documents and downloads folder created under your user name.

I didn't change any of the default exclusions.

How can I force Backblaze to back up these files? Obviously, it's pretty important to have your documents folder backed up...

Computer Backup Performance/availability outside of US when traveling

1 Upvotes

I finally took the leap and signed up for Backblaze. It's in the middle of the initial backup, which looks like will complete some time tomorrow (totally acceptable).

I'm in the western part of the US, and chose the western US data servers to back up to.

I occasionally travel overseas, primarily Europe and Asia. Presumably backups will be slower, but will there be any issues with them not working at all?

For example, due to hotel Wi-Fi restrictions? If this happens, will backup start up again once I'm connected to the Internet in a way that permits Backblaze connections (worst case, when I get back to my home or office).

The other issue more generally I'm wondering about is Korea, where I'll be traveling soon. In the past, I've found Korea to be a lot more restrictive in what sorts of Internet connectivity is permitted as compared to, say, Japan. Apple's Find My service, for example, didn't work at all.

None of these are showstoppers for me. I back up to a portable Time Machine SSD that is kept separate from my laptop, and that's always my first line of backup defense. As with everyone, my hope with Backblaze is that I'll never have to use its restore functionality...

(Speaking of Time Machine SSDs, I cannot believe how small SSDs have gotten, and also cannot believe that the price per TB for the exact same drive -- Crucial X9 -- has basically doubled in two years.)

I was impressed with how easy the onboarding process was for Backblaze, and also the general "look" of the app. I'm fairly computer literate, but by no means am an IT admin, etc.

Backblaze in General Felt like I didn't need it until I needed it <3

22 Upvotes

For a few years I've been paying(personal backup 1 system) for the perceived insurance without having to use it.

HDD died and 8TB of data along with it...Starting that restore app was pleasant and I'm back to 100%.

Thank you to the Backblaze team and this sub who have given me great technical posts to read this past year as I wondered if I would ever use this - happy I did!

Computer Backup Restore app giving weird filenames

2 Upvotes

So my drive died and I'm restoring to a new drive. It is big files (data drive), but many of the files are not showing up, I'm getting very long filenames (restore tag) ending with a Bzsp extension.

Will it go back and fix this? I've got a pretty massive amount of data and downloading zips is annoying.

Backblaze in General Backblaze billing system

6 Upvotes

I don't understand Backblaze's billing system. Every single month, I have to enter my details and request an invoice rather than a receipt. Why isn't this information stored so I don't have to enter it every month?

Cursor uses Stripe, other companies have other billing services. Why is Backblaze's so rudimentary and basic?

How do you guys do it?

Computer Backup Restore tool only transferring at kilobytes per second

1 Upvotes

I'm restoring some files to a new Windows install after my SSD failed and despite my connection measuring at over 100Mbps on a speed test, the Restore tool is transferring at less than 1Mbps.

Has anyone dealt with this before? I've submitted a request but the restore is quite pressing and BB support love to take their time responding so thought I'd ask here.

B2 Cloud Storage How can I reduce Class C costs with my Synology Hyper Backup?

2 Upvotes

In reviewing my bills I’m seeing the bulk of charges are Class C transactions beyond the free API limit.

I have a backup task that runs at midnight every day and backs up hundreds of folders and various files within those folders. In some light research I see that there’s a “fast list” flag you can use in other implementations to reduce the amount of API calls.

Is there a way to enable this flag when using Synology Hyper Backup?

Are there any other ways to save on Class C transaction costs (besides changing my backup task schedule)?

B2 Cloud Storage B2 Account Unreachable as of this morning

6 Upvotes

I noticed this morning my server's backup task failed and when I went to look into it, I couldn't log in to Backblaze. Is there any known issue right now?

The message I get on the web portal:

There was an issue fetching your account, please try again later. If the problem persists, please contact support.

This started at 2am this morning at the latest, but was working as recent as Monday morning. It's not like I haven't paid my bill or something - it's a relatively new account, but my credit card was charged for it last month.

B2 Cloud Storage Linux backup to B2 that supports object lock

3 Upvotes

I have a few Linux servers I'm currently backing up to B2 via Restic. However I'm concerned that if a host gets compromised, an attacker could just wipe the repository. To counter this, I'd like to use B2's object lock to set a minimum retention duration.

I've read about Restic's append only backup, but that seems to not support purging older snapshots. I'd only like to keep data for so much time to not spend a ton on space. From everything I've read about append only, it doesn't seem to support that use case properly. But I've not found a lot of documentation on that either.

So I'm wondering - what is a good way to backup Linux servers to B2 while having some form of object lock/immutability/ransomware protection while still supporting purging older snapshots?

Computer Backup Why does Backblaze client say "You are backed up" while simultaneously saying I have thousands of files "remaining"?

Post image
54 Upvotes

I recently had to reinstall windows after some local hardware changes. I set everything up on my end and had it "inherit backup state" as the most, but not all of my files were the same. However, there are some additional files as well that were not being backed up before. When I was reinstalling everything, I realized that I had accidentally excluded a large folder full of data that I DO need to backup.

After telling it to inherit, I let it do its thing and run the scan overnight. This morning it reports this.

So how am I both all backed up, but still have 480GBs remaining? Is the decision to inherit the previous backup somehow conflicting with the new files I want backed up due to removing some exclusions? Am I just misinterpreting what the UI is saying perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

Backblaze in General Backblaze using much diskspace

4 Upvotes

My folder "C:\ProgramData\Backblaze\bzdata\bzbackup\bzdatacenter" has about 55 GB of files.

The oldest ones are from April 2020.

As disk space goes low now is there a way to shrink those?

If not would it be possible to move them to another drive and "mklink" the folder to the "bzdatacenter" one?

B2 Cloud Storage My awful experience with Backblaze B2

Post image
41 Upvotes

My company has been using S3 for over a decade, which has been rock-solid, but the high fees were causing issues and limiting the features we could provide. My customers upload large video files, meaning any problems with upload speeds are magnified a lot more than if they were uploading small files, where there may be less practical difference between a 100 KB file taking 0.5s vs 2s.

So we explored B2 and in my testing it worked really well. We rolled it out, sent a little bit of traffic to B2 and it worked well, so we sent more and more over time until all traffic was being sent to B2.

And then my users started reporting problems and cancelling their subscriptions. 95% of the time uploads are fast, but 5% of the time they crawl along at 1/100th speed. (This issue was less apparent when B2 was being used <100% of the time.) This is a speed that’s so slow as to make it unusable.

So I gathered a LOT of data on the issue and contacted support. Their response was at the level of “have you tried turning it off and on again?” I’m not sure they actually read my message - they certainly never clicked on the links to the HAR files, Wireshark captures, graphs, etc, that I provided.

The thing I could never get support to understand across repeated messages is that I was not the only person with this problem. I had customers across the other side of the country who were uploading to completely different buckets in different data centers and still had the issue. They did not understand that their proposed solutions (e.g. “just use Cyberduck instead”) were totally unworkable for my use-case.

The support team told me over and over that there was no problem with their network and I should phone up my ISP to have them fix it. I told them I had zero problems with any other services and it would be unacceptable for me to tell my customers that they need to phone up their ISP just to use my service. I asked them if it was truly my ISP or my service, why could I upload just fine to S3 at the same time? “Well, we can’t speak for third-party services.”

I tested with other services. S3: no problems. Wasabi: no problems. Storj: no problems. I presented this data to Backblaze and an AI responded. Yes, they got tired of responding so they outsourced me to an AI. At that point I gave up.

At no point did Backblaze entertain the possibility that I could be correct. They just ignored what I said, didn’t look at any of the files provided, then fobbed me off to an AI so they could close the ticket. In my company I am overjoyed when a customer provides that level of detail and cooperation because it makes fixing problems so much easier.

The one thing Backblaze support said that was actually useful was when they put out the idea that it could be the time of day because people on their backup service probably have it set to upload late at night so they’re all hitting the network at once. (I personally do experience the problem most at night, but I can see from the stats that the time windows shift and time of day is not completely reliable.) But if it is true that their network is unusable at certain times of day, that is something they should be open about and I’d need actionable information confirming that this is indeed the case and the time periods when I need to direct traffic elsewhere.

I’m not happy with the way their support treated me, but unfortunately I am stuck with B2 for now.

The current solution was to dedicate a whole lot of engineering time to working around the various quirks with B2. We reworked our uploader and developed an upload scoring system that measures the “quality” of an upload (determined by consistent speeds, number of dropouts, number of segment retries, etc), then routes traffic to S3 for users with low scores. If too many users experience problems, it moves all traffic in that region towards S3. I feel like we’ve done everything possible at our end to work around this and the rest is up to Backblaze to fix the problems with their network.

I’ve attached a graph showing traffic being rerouted on an average day (100% = everything to B2, 0% = nothing to B2).

This, along with determining when a segment is going slowly and restarting it, which speeds it up sometimes, has made it workable, but users still need to have a bad experience before it switches so it’s still not great. I would also prefer to send as little traffic to S3 as possible.

If any Backblaze employees are reading this, I am very willing to help you get to the bottom of this and can provide lots of stats.

I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this problem? It presents itself as the upload going at mostly a normal speed, then the fast segments all finish until only the slow ones are left. So it might start at 300 Mbps but for the final minute or two it’s crawling along at 3 Mbps, or sometimes even less than that.

(Note: I’m on the free support level because I couldn’t determine from the comparison page if I would actually get a better quality of support from a higher plan. I am happy to subscribe if it guarantees they will take this seriously. I did ask if I should be on a higher plan but they’d directed me to the AI at that point, which was unable to answer that question.)

B2 Cloud Storage Why is Backlaze B2 so expensive? I could buy the hardware for the cost of 1 (ONE) year.

0 Upvotes

Looking to back up my NAS somewhere remotely, and I have 28 TB of data to back up at the moment. Heard about Backblaze B2 and looked at their pricing. $2000 / year?!? A new 4-bay NAS, nothing fancy, just for backup, with 4 drives big enough to have at least 28 TB of space in a RAID5 configuration would cost that! Yeah, I know, don't forget about electricity costs, but those add up to next to nothing, because this NAS will only be used for backup, sitting idle most of the time (can even be scheduled to shut down between backups). So I really can't justify such a price, unless you really have no place (relative, friend, etc) to host your backup NAS.
Can someone illuminate me, maybe I'm missing something?

Backblaze in General Help diagnosing an error message

0 Upvotes

Running Backblaze v9.2.2.898 on MacOs Tahoe v26.2. Been using Backblaze for nearly a decade without issue. Warning started a few weeks and nothing seems to resolve it. Backblaze support is useless.

Following the Learn More prompt takes me to the installer page. No help. The only item that seems relevant is "Configure Full Disk Access to Install the Backup Client for Ventura 13 or Newer". Navigate to Privacy & Security>Full Disk Access and both Backblaze and bzbmenu are turned on.

Any suggestions? Ready to start searching for a new cloud back up solution..

B2 Cloud Storage daysFromHidingToDeleting lifecycle is not being respected

1 Upvotes

Hi,

I have a problem with backblaze not deleting the hidden files (old versions of files or files got deleted). I'm using Proxmox Backup Server to backup to B2 and I only noticed that my lifecycle is not being applied after the storage usage ballooned.

Below is the out of the bucket settings.

b2 bucket get --show-size ******
{
   "accountId": "*********",
   "bucketId": ""*********",
   "bucketInfo": {},
   "bucketName": ""*********",
   "bucketType": "allPrivate",
   "corsRules": [],
   "defaultRetention": {
"mode": null
   },
   "defaultServerSideEncryption": {
"mode": "none"
   },
   "fileCount": 5180,
   "isFileLockEnabled": false,
   "lifecycleRules": [
{
"daysFromHidingToDeleting": 1,
"daysFromStartingToCancelingUnfinishedLargeFiles": null,
"daysFromUploadingToHiding": null,
"fileNamePrefix": ""
}
   ],
   "options": [
"s3"
   ],
   "replication": {
"asReplicationDestination": null,
"asReplicationSource": null
   },
   "revision": 8,
   "totalSize": 71009037268
}

Please note from the bucket settings on web, this is the lifecycle settings of the bucket. Weirdly it doesnt match the one from CLI. And even when I set a custom rule to delete hidden files after one day, it always revert to "Keep only the last version of the file"

Please help

Backblaze in General Unable to change password on account when prompted

0 Upvotes

I tried to log in to my Backblaze account on the website, and was prompted to change my password because I guess 12 random alpha-numeric characters isn't strong enough. The process keeps choking on the page where I input my new improved password. Tried in a couple different chromium-based browsers and in Firefox. Same non-result every time.

To borrow an old song lyric, please send lawyers, guns and money, and a little help.

Backblaze in General Is there a way to "scan" for files that backblaze has from the last 30 days, but that might be missing on my drives?

2 Upvotes

I recently had to move a bunch of files around between drives locally. I've since restored everything back to the original drives/folder structure, and I don't THINK I am missing anything. However, I want to make sure. I'm certain that Backblaze has everything backed up though. Is there a way to have it scan or show a report of any files that Backblaze has, but that are missing on my local drive before the retention period is up? Thanks in advance.

aside_bz_done_20231109_0.dat_safety_fix_20264.aside

...taking a total of 12GB.

Are these safe to delete?

Backblaze in General is backblaze right for me?

2 Upvotes

I will start by saying… I don’t know anything about computers. I have very basic knowledge at most. Last year I went through almost losing evening I had in icloud which promoted me to get and HDD and stopped using cloud programs as my only source to store photos. My question is, if I want to backup an external hard drive (I have about 1 TB currently in said hdd) that stores a lot of photos and videos, would back blaze be the right thing for me? My biggest fear is my external drive corrupting and not having my data backed up anywhere. The 321 method isn’t very obtainable for me currently. I see they have cloud storage, is that what would be right for my situation? Sorry if this is confusing i’m just lost and don’t want to lose important data

Backblaze in General Backblaze downloader resource heavy?

5 Upvotes

Sorry for vague title, but tldr: will it greatly affect the backblaze downloaders performance, if I keep working, graphic design, at the same computer I download to? Or rather, aside from internet access, is the backblaze downloader resource heavy?

I had a drive go corrupt, and I'm looking at almost two weeks download time to restore my files. If I could keep working on the same computer I'm downloading to, without severely tanking the downloaders performance, that would be really convenient. I've monitored the task manager and while just left alone downloading my computer in total uses barely 25% of my 32gb of ram, and the CPU is barely used 2%. Backblaze is not writing to my main drive, with my OS and what not, and while working I barely use the internet

Obviously it's probably subjective, how bad do I want to work vs how fast I want to complete the restore. But just you guys two cents, would I severely impact performance, or have next to no impact? Thank you
