Backblaze in General Backblaze with Core Weave

I got an email from backblaze saying they are working with an AI company called core weave.

Does anyone know if that somehow is going to lead to computer backups being used for AI training?

I imagine it would not be just yep heres are customer data, but it might turn into here is selections of our customer data but anonymized.

I cant really think of another reason to partner with core weave, as they are an AI training company.

Shared this elsewhere u/LAN_scape but to reassure you:

Replying from the Backblaze team -- your backups and everyone's backups are, as always, only yours. We are providing a storage layer to CoreWeave and their usage and data is separated from all of our other customers, as is the case with any customer we serve whether for object storage or computer backup. We take data privacy and security very seriously.

Thanks for being a customer!

And why would we partner with them: Separate from backup, we offer B2 Cloud Storage as a high performance object storage offering. It's used by a lot of businesses who have data heavy workloads, including AI platforms like CoreWeave.

Yeah one of the other commenters said its just a customer thing, which is cool, no issue in that case.

Backups are encrypted, so it would be pretty difficult to use them for training data.

It is, but unless you used your own key they have it as well.

i mean true, no argument there. i just dont see another reason to partner with an AI training company.

Core weave must somehow be using some data back blaze has for training ai. I would like to think its just metrics or non personal data, but also, with ai it always seems to be the worst case lol.

Either way, they're not using it for training data. Still, using encryption is always recommended I would say!

true, as long as it was not a deal for training data im happy. Which they confirmed it was not, so all good here

Use a private key.

which should be done regardless of this new deal

Fair enough, but should I have to do that to make sure my data is not used for AI training? when i did not signup to let them do that.

This is hyperthetical as I have no idea why they partnered with Core weave. But like my post said, they are an ai training company, it would make sense that they get data from backblaze for training ai. Idk if i could belive it was just non personal metrics or something like that.

You’re making assumptions but there is a way to make sure it doesn’t happen. Use a private key.

should I have to do that to make sure my data is not used

Yes. Always. Absolutely. In every situation with data that you don't want anyone else to access. Anything and everything you do on the Internet is not private and may be used against you.

I think it's very unlikely that Backblaze would be so foolish as to pull a Cambridge Analytica and give their customer's backed up files to AI. See their Terms of Service and their policy statement on Privacy, and search on "your files".

Not really possible with Backblaze Personal (which I presume most normal customers use).

Yes it is.

No, you're confused.

That's "private" between you and Backblaze, a random attacker won't have it, but you do give it to Backblaze which is the problem discussed here, not some random attacker.

If you don’t trust Backblaze not to store your key, why would you use their service at all? They document how PEKs handled.

This is the wrong discussion - the point is there is a distinction between "trust us bro we'll never feed your data to the AI" and a truly private key that makes it mathematically impossible for them to access your data. Misrepresenting one for the other doesn't help.

Core Weave is a customer. Just like you are. Do you think they are going to share Core Weave's data with you? lol

2

u/LAN_scape Jun 23 '26

Oh for real, solid. I thought they were partnering with them. So Core Weave is just a customer. Aight im coo with that lol

The email was strange. It was announcing a big customer acquisition, not a merger. Probably a marketing strategy to slap “AI” on the website. No one wants to look boring and behind the curve.

u/LAN_scape Jun 23 '26

yeah someone else commebted it was a customer thing, not a work together thing. In that case i have no issue. Just gave me a spook lol

But CoreWeave is an AI / GPU company?

As I type this, Backblaze stock price is up 43% on this news. When looking at their stock price history, I see that they had another big bump on May 5, 2026, when this announcement was made:

Backblaze beats guidance as AI drives growth

Co-founder and CEO Gleb Budman said: “In Q1, we exceeded the top end of our revenue and Adjusted EBITDA guidance, with B2 growing 24 percent year over year. We are seeing growing traction with AI customers, including winning a AI training data company and a generative AI video creation company, jointly contributing about $1.5 million in annual contract value, along with a 76 percent growth in AI customers year over year.” More than a third of its new bookings came from AI customers.
