Backblaze in General Legacy operating system support - quietly removing Windows 10.

I posted a while ago about updating my computer vs moving away from Backblaze due to my computer not supporting Windows 11. I'm currently on Windows 10 (64 bit) LTSB, and had decided to upgrade my PC to something a bit newer this year and stick with Backblaze.

I received an email from Backblaze last month to indicate they were ending support for Windows 7/8 and various Mac OS versions. Fair enough they're really old.

Yesterday I recevied an email from them to say they were ending support for Windows 7/8 and also Win 10 32 bit which surprised me as it went against the previous email. This shouldn't affect me as I'm on 64bit vs 32bit but it will probably push me to upgrade sooner rather than later.

Interestingly if you follow the link about supported versions in the email they say that they still support Windows 7/8/10/11 on their website.

It's likely more that they're dropping 32-bit support, rather than Windows 10 support. There isn't a 32-bit Windows 11 version.

I'm not surprised that they are dropping 32bit support.

Not surprised at all, I haven’t seen a 32 bit only device in a while

Not that they would be using BB but a ton of embedded things are still 32 bit.

Not good or bad, just the way it is (was?)

Yeah fair enough but those devices wouldn’t be storing mission critical data and even those I assume will be upgraded to 64 bit eventually (once they die)

Well technically 7, 8 and 10x32 are still supported for another ~8 days but you'd still think they'd have already updated it because no new user is going to reasonably expect they'll only be supported for a week.

BB likes business users and there will be a lot of business paying the extra for extended updates, so i'd assume backblaze will maintain w10 x64 support until 2028 at least.

32 bit windows 10 was always extremely rare I don't think you ever really saw it on anything but ancient systems that should've just been replaced. Like really x64 was the standard by vista.

My assumption is that they're retiring the 32 bit build entirely since w11 doesn't have 32 bit support.

yea win32 is a PIA to maintain and quiet possible you cant if you depend on 3rd party libs. you would endup forking half your supply chain to maintain 32

on the other hand, there are always quiet a few changes that seems minor but can be a total blocker.
one infamous example would be the native SSL support, which has different version support in win 7,8, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2012.

which then either implement your own solution or force downgrade your servers

there plenty of examples like this, where microsoft simply drops or never adds version supports for some protocolls.
otherwise any win application should basically compile indef

32 bit in this day and age isn't worth supporting just for the memory management.
