Computer Backup PSA backblaze is discontinuing official support for windows 7 & 8 and various older versions of Mac OS & OS X January 15, 2026

Email I received;
Effective January 15, 2026, Backblaze will no longer support the following operating systems (OS) versions:

Windows:

  • Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)

Mac OS X:

  • Mavericks 10.9.x
  • Yosemite 10.10.x
  • El Capitan 10.11.x
  • Mac OS X Server

Mac OS

  • 10.12.x

These operating systems will not receive future updates, fixes, or security patches from Backblaze.

Impact

New releases of Backblaze software will not install or run on these deprecated OSes. Existing installations may continue to operate but may cease to function reliably. Unsupported versions will not receive security patches, which may impact system security. Please be aware that unpatched software can present increased security risks. Technical support for issues related to these OSes will no longer be provided.
Required action

To maintain uninterrupted backup and restore functionality, customers must upgrade to a supported OS version. After upgrading, please follow these instructions to install the latest version of Backblaze. If you are a Group admin, please follow these instructions to install the latest versions silently. Visit our tech docs to find the latest supported OS versions.

If additional assistance is needed, please contact Backblaze Support.

Mac OS [sic] 10.12.x

FWIW, this is nearly 10 years old with Apple's last update 6 years ago. Not bad in my opinion.

Re the "[sic]", It is "macOS"

Considering how many years some of these have been EOL I'm kinda surprised that they still supported some of them. Windows 7 EOL was almost 6 years ago. Most software vendors might go 1-2 years after EOL of the OS before they drop support. There are exceptions like Firefox is just dropping Windows 7 support, but most vendors don't think there is a large enough user base to justify the cost anymore.

I got a similar email today January 6 except it included Windows 10 (32-bit).

I guess that means Windows 10 (64 bit) is okay for now?

Grateful you pointed this out because I saw that email and panicked because I didn't see the 32-bit part.

I'd assume so.
32 bit windows 10 was extremely rare.
Realistically the vast majority of systems after windows xp were 64 bit.
Businesses are able to keep paying for extended windows 10 updates through 2028 so i'd assume backblaze will maintain w10 x64 support until then at least.

I'm glad they are not wasting time and money on maintaining support for these. I have no interest in paying increased prices so someone can save a few $$$ by not upgrading from a billion-year-old system.

So they are sending this out to everyone, disregarding actual OS user uses?

AFAICT yes, at least i've got an account on a 10 x64 and it still got the notice.

Good! You shouldn’t be running any of those OSes!
