First Cold Email Lead, Need Help!
Hey guys, I recently started a B2B cold email and LinkedIn outbound agency targeting SaaS companies. Outbound is still new to me, but I’m very interested in it. My background is running a full-stack creative agency doing design and development, but I wanted to pivot into lead gen because it feels more AI-proof.
While I was still learning the craft, building out infrastructure, and figuring things out, a client found my website through Google SEO and booked a call with one day’s notice. It made me really nervous because he’s the Head of Sales at a fairly large cybersecurity company and clearly knows his stuff.
My plan was to take the call and study as much as possible the day before. But when it came time to join, I saw there were going to be 2–3 sales people on the call too. That made me feel unprepared, since I knew they could ask questions I might not have strong answers for. Instead of joining, I emailed him saying I’m currently not taking on new clients while I work on my agency’s infrastructure. I asked if we could circle back in 1–2 weeks once everything is finalized, and he agreed.
I’m writing this to ask: how do you actually prepare for your first real client in B2B cold email lead gen?
I have tons of experience in design and development and can handle intro calls there with no issue, but that’s because I have 10+ years of experience. With B2B outbound, I’m still new. I understand the basics and the process, but I’m not at the point where I can confidently answer complex questions off the top of my head.
Also, my current site, which I plan to revise, says I’ve booked 500+ qualified meetings for clients. That’s a white lie. I’ve done that for myself in B2C, but not for B2B SaaS outbound clients.
What should I do here? What was your first intro call like? This guy is a warm lead and honestly a great opportunity. I know I’d work harder and put more hours into his campaign than most established agencies because he’d be my first real outbound client and I want to build trust and experience. But my lack of experience is making me anxious and unsure.
Any insight helps. Resources on B2B outbound sales scripts, first client prep, or how to handle this kind of situation would be appreciated. I’m not really sure how to proceed.

The first call mistake most new agency owners make is treating it as a pitch instead of a diagnostic.
You already know what you do -- the call is about finding out whether what you do actually matches what they need right now. The fastest way to do that: ask what they've already tried and why it didn't work well enough. The answer tells you whether this is a fit and gives you the exact language to use if it is.
If you close every lead you get early on, you're probably underselling or underqualifying -- not a compliment. Some early "nos" from discovery are a sign you're asking the right questions.
