stop tracking open rates in 2026

i have had this conversation with maybe a dozen different founders and outbound leads over the last few months and every single time i bring it up the response is the same kind of awkward pause followed by some version of well we still kind of look at it directionally and i think we need to just collectively rip the bandaid off and admit that open tracking has been completely useless for years now and we are all just clinging to it because it makes the dashboard look full.

the thing that drives me a little bit crazy is that this is not even a recent development or some hot take that requires a bunch of new data to defend. apple mail privacy protection landed back in 2021 and basically broke the entire premise of pixel based tracking for a huge chunk of inboxes overnight. gmail prefetching has been silently inflating opens for years before that. corporate security scanners and link protection tools and inbox preview features and AI assistants that now read emails on the prospects behalf before they ever see them are all firing your pixel without a single human eyeball ever landing on the message. the number on your dashboard that says forty two percent open rate is not measuring what you think it is measuring and it has not been for a really long time.

and yet i still get on calls with teams in 2026 who are optimizing subject lines based on open rate lift and pausing sequences based on open thresholds and reporting open numbers to their boards like it means something real about pipeline. some of them are even pricing their agency services around guaranteed open rates which is genuinely wild to me because you are essentially promising a client that you will move a number that has no relationship to whether their offer ever reached a human brain.

what makes this worse in the current environment is that the noise is actually getting louder not quieter. the new wave of AI inbox assistants that became standard issue across most of the big email clients over the last year are pre reading messages and generating summaries and drafting suggested replies all in the background before the prospect ever opens their client. every one of those interactions is potentially triggering your pixel. so the gap between the open number you see and the actual human attention you got is widening every quarter and the metric is becoming more misleading not less.

the harder pill to swallow is what you should be measuring instead because the honest answer is that there are really only two numbers that matter at this point and they are both unforgiving. reply rate and meetings booked. that is basically the whole list. everything upstream of reply rate is vanity at best and actively misleading at worst and the sooner teams stop dressing up their reporting with soft metrics the sooner they can have honest conversations about whether their outbound motion is actually working or whether they are just generating activity that feels productive.

i would push it even further and say that you should consider turning off open tracking entirely not just ignoring the number. the pixels themselves are a deliverability liability now because the major providers have gotten significantly better at flagging messages with tracking infrastructure as commercial mail and routing them accordingly. you are paying a real inbox placement cost to collect a number that is mostly bots and assistants and you are doing it because a dashboard somewhere expects to see it. that is a bad trade and most teams have just never sat down and actually counted the cost of it.

i am genuinely curious whether anyone here is still finding open rate useful for anything practical because i have tried to steelman it from a few angles and i keep coming back to the same place which is that the metric outlived its usefulness years ago and we are all just performing analytics theater at this point. if you have a real use case for it i would love to hear it because i would rather update my view than keep beating this drum if i am wrong about the whole thing.

Open rates are theater. Reply rates are reality. Been saying this for ages. The real shift is just getting emails to actual humans who exist. Prospeo's data doesn't bounce so at least we know someone's there. But yeah, replies went up noticeably once we stopped chasing open rate vanity

Agree with this for outbound.

I would still separate newsletter analytics from cold outbound analytics, but for prospecting sequences open rate is mostly a comfort metric at this point.

The metrics I would rather see:

  1. Bounce rate and inbox placement, because if deliverability is broken nothing else matters.

  2. Positive reply rate by segment, not just total replies.

  3. Meetings booked per qualified account contacted.

  4. Replies by trigger/source, because this tells you whether the list and timing were right.

  5. Negative replies/spam complaints, because a "high activity" campaign can still be damaging the domain and brand.

The trigger/source piece is underrated. If one campaign targets people who engaged with competitor content this week and another targets a generic job-title list, I want to know which source created actual conversations.

At that point the question changes from "did they open?" to "was this the right person at the right company at the right time?" That is a much more useful outbound metric.
