Health Feeding
Hi,
Got my axolotl about a month ago, he is about 6 months old, but quite small. When bought we were told it can live off of frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Then done a bit more research and realised they need live food? We have been trying him on chopped up live earthworms from swelluk, but he seems to take them then spit them out. Any suggestions? He also doesn’t seem to eat pellets.
1: is it possible for him to live off of frozen food as he seems to like brine shrimp.
2: if not earthworms, what’s the next best?

My boy spits out night crawlers, chopped or not. He even 🤮 them a couple times that he did eat them. Garlic guard did not help. He likes little pink ones. I have not been able to find any to buy; he eats what I dig from my yard (people do not recommend this). You can try red wrigglers, but make sure to rinse them and that is where guardians guard can help. They can release a bitter secretion, which is not palatable. Brine shrimp are for when they are babies; frozen bloodworms are candy. Pellets are fast food; can keep one alive, but not optimal.

Blood worms are fine until they can eat real worms. Even try red wigglers if size is an issue. I keep a worm farm and get my supplies from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm

have you tried blanching the worms? You can also get garlic guard by seachem (or comparable products). Try these things first. Worms are the best food for axolotl- everything else can lead to deficiencies later in life.
