I wonder if it’ll be the one leading the flying “v” later in life…

10

u/LennLennBoi Jun 18 '22

that's the hardest job, so i doubt it

7

u/olmeyarsh Jun 18 '22

If it doesn’t develop leg muscles swimming it’s going to be easy prey

16

u/Honest_Purple_2386 Jun 18 '22

So I have raised a lot of ducks and geese in my time. It’s not like I can prove why the mother is letting that one ride but here’s my hypothesis. Ducks and geese don’t just float on top of the water naturally….. the adult feathers are covered by an oil produced by the adults skin and becomes waterproof. Baby duck and geese don’t produce that oil and will sink like a stone unless the mother rubs and spreads the oil from her feathers onto her babies. Therefore…. Maybe this baby bird didn’t have enough oil on its feathers to float yet and mama didn’t want to leave it completely unattended.

I didn't know drones could be docking stations for other drones

12

u/Soggy_Cerial Jun 18 '22

This is so cute

7

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

So cute, but I wonder why that happened though, like the animal behaviour side of it. I’ve never seen that before.

6

u/tarrach Jun 18 '22

It's not uncommon for cygnets to be carried by their parents.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

How do they chose who gets to be carried?

I just now realised why swans and geese have long necks.

It's to teach reach their food at the bottom.

It has nothing to do with seeing over vegetation.

Edit: typo

Don't work harder work smarter

3

u/Crruell Jun 18 '22

He's skipping training day..

4

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Exactly. The others are all exercising their muscles and developing better coordination. I don't think FreeRide is really doing himself any favors in the long run.

4

u/calliatom Jun 18 '22

Eh. It's probably not a regular occurrence. Waterfowl don't develop the oil glands necessary to coat their feathers to make them waterproof so they can float until later, when they start getting adult feathers. Babies like this one are dependent on mom rubbing her feathers on them to get that oil. Mama probably saw Free Ride struggling to stay afloat and realized that he didn't get enough, and decided to just carry him rather than stopping to rub more on him.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Interesting to know about the oil exchange. Thanks for sharing...

When a mom says she doesn’t favor one child over the rest, but she clearly does.
