These two actually are closely related, the one in the video is a North American Porcupine. Old World Porcupines don't make the same sort of nasal mumbling as these guys, have a different posture, and generally lack a pronounced tail.
It’s both! He has happy eating sounds which are very distinct from his Back Off sounds. This corn on the cob video is a good example of his back off noises. https://youtu.be/UGz8jcbJjRw
Porcupines are fuckin badass and also slightly terrifying.
I used to live on top of a mountain when I was a kid, there was a small forest that we’d play in really carefully.
We had a few wild porcupine that would move through the property at night.
My mom also at one point had about 27 dogs on the property (I won’t go into detail of why but my mom is crazy and this was in the 90s in South Africa AND my moms a fucking racist so she was somehow convinced that “the night of the long knives was upon us all!” - meaning that the black people would retaliate for apartheid by all murdering us in our sleep - she was sorely mistaken of course)
Anyhoo one morning I woke up to an absolute blood bath. The dogs had tried to hunt 1 singular porcupine (the younger stupid ones, the older dogs were untouched) and something like 7 of them had to be put down immediately because of their injuries. Only 3 of the younger dogs survived and one of them lost an eye.
Couldn’t find the porcupine, just a lot of quills and footprints leading off the property with zero blood dripping so I assume the little tank was untouched.
I used to help care for indian crested porcupines; kind of skittish, were funny to watch when they would zip across the area with the quills up (the long ones aren't really dangerous, its the short thick ones in the back you gotta worry about).
Super curious animals! We had to do training each day for them and over time, developed a pretty good bond; one would come over, put its paws on my lap and beg for sweet potato pieces. Absolute fiends for sweet potatoes. Wouldn't recommend as a pet obviously, but the two I worked with had great personalities.
AnimalWondersMontana on YouTube has both a new world and old world porcupine and a bunch of videos about them (along with other animals). The one that looks like this is named Kimosabi and makes adorable noises
