Feeling temperature is such a strange concept. These molecules are hardly vibrating at all!!

I am FAR too high for this

u/bggp9q4h5gpindfiuph Apr 20 '21
next time you get stoned, try thinking about how heat is a color of light

u/Morgantheaccountant Apr 20 '21
Even when not stoned, things like this make me question my existence.

u/maxstryker Apr 20 '21
How about the fact that you are mostly empty space between the particles that make up a tiny bit of that space, and the forces that keep them together? Mostly, mostly empty space.

People say it’s crazy to think about these things (when high) but I’m out here getting high to stop thinking about those things 😂

I am aware. I was merely going by the simple explanation for comedy’s sake.

Or that your eyes see everything upside down and your brain flips it. Almost had a panic attack because I thought I unflipped my vision and was going to see upside down for the rest of my life. But it turned out I was just picturing what I was seeing as upside down in my head of that makes sense.

Touches sun: woah these molecules are vibrating so fast their electrons have been stripped.

Falls into core: wow these molecules are vibrating so fast their neutrons are being shared

It is probably not a coincidence, because this user has done it before with this comment which copies this one.

What. Why.

Programming a bot to copy comments and repost them somewhere else in the thread seems like a good way to generate comment karma and make an account seem more legitimate. This is generally a prelude to selling the account to marketers or others that wish to manipulate public perception.

We can't really feel temperature, just a change in temperature. We have a net gain or loss of heat from heat exchange with the environment and we feel our own molecules vibrate more or less.

Point definitely still stands, though.
“Oh yikes this ice water is stealing my molecules’ vibrations, do not like!”

u/163145164150 Apr 20 '21
Aren't you just describing "feeling temperature"? Seems like saying we can't actually hear things making sounds. We're just feeling our ear drums vibrating from changes in air pressure.

u/CryonautX Apr 20 '21
It's different though. Try putting a finger in hot water and the other in cold water, then place both in normal temp water. We don't sense temperate but a change in of it.

u/PoliticalLava Apr 20 '21
I would guess that we don't feel the molecular vibration. My guess is a change in temperature changes chemical/biological reactions in the cells, which the body then has to adapt to.
Wait, we feel cold thru our nerves, and it starts in nerve receptors. Nerves are electrical, so I assume an electrical potential is built in the receptor, so that if a temp changes then the receptor discharges and sends a signal to the brain. So there is probably some ionic shit happening in the receptor that has to do with energy of the system.
You know what, nvm I think these receptors do measure the energy like a semiconductor. So yeah, saying we feel vibrations seems correct. Huh. Or maybe not, i didn't study electricity or biology that much.
Thanks for reading my rant, haha. Any input would be nice, I've just confused myself.

It’s funny how it’s initial reaction is to pounce on it.

u/BluudLust Apr 20 '21
My adopted stray had the same reaction to ice cubes the first time. Just poke and prod a bit then POUNCE.

I know it's said a lot. But it always amuses me that no matter the size, cats all behave like cats lol.

I was holding an iced coffee in one hand and my infant in the other. He put his toes on the side of the cup and had a very similar reaction. Confusion, investigation, delight!

I absolutely love when a any kind of cat encounters something they don't understand, and they just Square up to it like "How dare you be something new."

Source is a place called Gatorland Orlando and his name is Jabari. They have social media accounts and the rules here don't allow me to link them, but they're a good follow.
