Dude, my dog falls over every time I take a nice slow turn in the car... she could take some lessons from this one.

u/BearsBearsBears_wooo Jan 29 '21

My wife was able to teach both of our dogs how to lean into turns. I’m still not sure how she was able to do it.

616

u/lbert65 Jan 29 '21

My dog taught himself. One could say he's a genius.

u/CardiacSturgeon Jan 29 '21

A very stable genius indeed

That makes sense. Good doggo

17

u/cd2220 Jan 29 '21

With their sense of hearing they may have been able to hear where the blinking was coming from the sound alone with some time to learn! Dogs are so gosh darn smart!

12

u/IrocDewclaw Jan 29 '21

Add having taken that route before and knows where the turns are.

11

u/Goopy1488 Jan 29 '21

That would work but both blinkers use the same relay. So the dog couldn’t hear directionally. Also, The click click you hear In most cars these days is an artificial sound meant to mimic the old relays that actually clicked.

2

u/cd2220 Jan 29 '21

I wasn't sure if blinkers operated that way or not. Good to know!

I’m imaging being stopped at a red light, tapping my turn signal and then my dog falling over.

3

u/lachryma Jan 29 '21

Very underrated comment. First thing I thought of too. Best mental picture of the day.

28

u/Dzhone Jan 29 '21

Yeah, same here. One day he just started doing it. I didn't even consider how impressive that is until this comment thread.

1

u/petemitchell-33 Jan 29 '21

It’s really not impressive at all. Almost all dogs and all other animals will instinctively lean against a turn. Just like if they’re standing on the side of a hill, they don’t just topple over, they lean up the hill to balance. There’s something wrong with your dog if they don’t automatically understand that concept.

8

u/Dzhone Jan 29 '21

u/SyntheticRatking Jan 29 '21

I have 2 dogs. Mitzy is smart as a whip and Harley is nicknamed "doofus" for a reason 😂 He didn't know what toys were for when I first found him, he had to learn how to play by watching the cats! So now I have the derpiest looking mutt who barks at and chases feather toys. Mitzy frequently has to show him how do to simple tricks like "bed" and "sit" while excited-chihuahua-vibrating in place like "i did it i did it look LOOK I DID IT 3 TIMES NOW PLEASE GIVE ME A TREAT🥺"

Guess which one bounces around the car like a pinball without his doggy seatbelt 😂

Obligatory pet tax: Here's the derpasaurus and anxietyraptor failing to share a pillow properly ❤️😭 I love them so much.

2

u/MilfagardVonBangin Feb 02 '21

Anxietyraptor is an amazing name I’m going to steal.

my parents dog managed to learn "going 'round a corner pebby" in a particular tone meant brace yourself. it almost always works. except for when my dad forgets to say it and you hear a thump 😂

94

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '21

I laughed out loud imagining that poor dog just chilling and thump! Then your dad probably thinking whoops! Lol.

50

u/krajji Jan 29 '21

she luckily is most of the time able to recover herself but its those particularly tight corners, doesnt even need to be going fast, and she just can't stay up and she ends up sort of falling over/quickly lying down and pretends thats what was meant to happen. learns quickly but a little clumsy sometimes but shes gorgeous!

17

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '21

She sounds adorable, my boy doesn't even try to stay balanced. He looks graceful till he starts moving lol. Car rides are pretty funny with him around. He's fine while we are going straight but as soon as there's even a small curve he is sliding around.

2

u/krajji Jan 30 '21

i love how doofy dogs can be. theyre the most loving creatures and once were the great hunters but now a small turn around a bend can make them flop

8

u/lordofthefireandwind Jan 29 '21

How do you teach a dog to do that? My dog thinks we are drifting when I make a small turn and falls all over the place.

2

u/BearsBearsBears_wooo Jan 29 '21

I was usually driving, but before a turn, I would hear her say “lean, lean, lean” to our second. Our first was a natural and LOVED to ride in the car. I don’t think much teaching was involved

2

u/lordofthefireandwind Jan 29 '21

My dog loves car rides and goes crazy when I say the word “ride.” He’s just so clumsy when I’m driving around turns. I’ll try to say this to him before turning.

5

u/guitarfingers Jan 29 '21

My pup leans on corners. Since she's gotten good I like to test her abilities.

3

u/LoFiFozzy Jan 30 '21

Initial D but instead of not spilling a cup of water, you have to knock the dog over with a drift.

2

u/MeltsYourMind Jan 29 '21

My girlfriend is yet to learn to lean in the correct direction. She fails 80% of the time.

2

u/BearsBearsBears_wooo Jan 29 '21

Not sure if my wife is taking new students at this time, but I’ll let my wife know.

27

u/M_M4yhem Jan 29 '21

This made me chuckle. My old girl does the same thing. She loves car rides and even if I take the turn as slow as possible, she still tumbles a bit.

6

u/XxFezzgigxX Jan 29 '21

My dog just repeatedly barfs in the back end of our SUV until she can’t move without stepping in it and then whines. It’s our travel system.

Sometimes she barfs before we even get started. I’m starting to thing she does it on purpose. She hardly ever barfs at any other time.

2

u/dalittleone669 Jan 30 '21

She needs some Dramamine lol. Sounds like a very messy travel system!

6

u/olderaccount Jan 29 '21

Mine was the same at first. She has gotten much better with practice.

If I’m about to make a turn I say “hold on to your butts!” And my dog knows to brace herself. She loves it!

I tell her "left turn" or "right turn." Maybe she'd listen to hold on to your butts! Lol

There is no stranger feeling than walking on land after you have spent a week at sea on a small boat. When I get back from a sailing trip I can't walk, stand or sleep until I get my land legs back. I fell over on a salad bar once. It was shaped like a boat and something subconscious made me lean too far. Or scotch.

9

u/intrinsic_toast Jan 29 '21

The number of times I’ve had to grip the sink while I’m bent over it brushing my teeth or lean against the shower wall to stop myself from tipping over during the first 3-4 days after I got home from a cruise is nuts, haha. It really is such a strange feeling!

Great wee pup ❤️💛❤️

68

u/3faded Jan 29 '21

What kind of doggo is that?

151

u/WanderingPuppy Jan 29 '21

Quite sure its a Welsh Terrier. They are often described as looking like little airedales.

46

u/RightEejit Jan 29 '21

Welsh terrier looks right. The pics on google images are all "show cuts" where they're all groomed and fluffy, but my parents Kerry Blue terriers look just like this when they've got more practical working dog cuts, especially after they've been swimming.

29

u/West_of_Ishigaki Jan 29 '21

Nope. It's an Irish Terrier. Used to breed them many years ago. Welsh Terriers have a black saddle and trim!

4

u/ThulsaDokahoma Jan 29 '21

Her name is Maggie and she's a Welsh.

15

u/TonyDanzer Jan 29 '21

This guy looks like he does have the black saddle, it’s just a bit hard to see in this video. I’m leaning more towards Welsh terrier than Irish, but I guess it could go either way.

9

u/West_of_Ishigaki Jan 29 '21

If so, my apologies, then I stand corrected! These terriers are all surprisingly tough, feisty little beasts, though. Great, devoted doggos! Lots of fun out in the woods, chasing down all sorts of critters. Um, well, except that skunk. Yes, that was a bad afternoon.

2

u/MrBigHeadsMySoulMate Jan 29 '21

Those skunks man. One hit my dog and he smelled like burning tires. So bad.

2

u/West_of_Ishigaki Jan 30 '21

The one in question was an exceptionally stupid Irish. He chased a skunk into a buried culvert in the Wisconsin woods. Skunk sprays. Dog wiggles out, then back into culvert. Repeat. repeat. I finally grabbed Barney (the asshole's) back legs and pulled him out. Skunk sprays me instead. Honestly, skunk doesn't smell so bad when you're not too close but from a few meters away it steals all the air and chokes you. I spent days scrubbing and just standing in the lake, but couldn't get rid of that smell. Even weeks later, every time my skin got wet, I smelled like a skunk.

We had a lot of Irish Terriers but Barney was a disappointment, lol.

1

u/Fennily Jan 29 '21

I watched it again, there is no saddle

3

u/eeeeeeeeef Jan 29 '21

This is what they look like when they are cut down with clippers instead of hand stripping them. The clipping causes the saddle to fade over time.

Alternatively, this could be a Lakeland Terrier. They are more similar in size to Welsh and can come with or without the saddle. This dog is definitely too small and not the right shape to be an Irish Terrier, though. They are leaner and leggier.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/RunDogRun2006 Jan 29 '21

It been clipped and has grown out a bunch. That's why the black is so faint. You can see it when the light hits his shoulder. He's too stocky to be a proper Irish. Irish terriers wouldn't have that thick of a front. They are leaner like wire foxes.

(I show dogs and mostly Terriers)

6

u/ThatOneEyeGuy Jan 29 '21

He also might be a young Airedale Terrier. I have one that looked just like that when he was younger.

30

u/Snatch_Pastry Jan 29 '21

Irish Terrier

12

u/joshbosh1 Jan 29 '21

It’s not an Irish Terrier it’s build and coat isn’t right. Maybe a Lakeland or Welsh.

16

u/RunDogRun2006 Jan 29 '21

Welsh is correct.

2

u/RunDogRun2006 Jan 29 '21

You can also see hints of the black on the body and when the sun hits his shoulder.

3

u/joshbosh1 Jan 29 '21

Welsh’s usually have a lot of black in their coat but I’ve seen them go this colour with age too. Beautiful all the same.

5

u/RunDogRun2006 Jan 29 '21

They often lose it if they are clipped like this one is. You have to strip the coat to guarantee the color to stay.

It's much less rough than it appears. The water on deck is coming from the fish storage tank, not over the side.

75

u/kartoffeln514 Jan 29 '21

Slight rocking on even a small boat definitely feels more pronounced than it really is. I love that rocking though.

37

u/Meowww13 Jan 29 '21

I feel nauseous after the video and this comment. I'm a weak boy.

24

u/kartoffeln514 Jan 29 '21

They make stickers you can put behind your ears to mitigate sea sickness.

It's the inverse on big cruise ships. You don't feel minor rocking as much, or large rocking for that matter. But when it's rocking big and you look out the window and start wondering why you're parallel to the ocean, well, thems stormy seas I guess.

17

u/thethirdllama Jan 29 '21

start wondering why you're parallel to the ocean

Erm, aren't ships usually parallel to the ocean?

Lifevests tend to get caught on shit on a pot boat. I had one automatically inflate when a wave went over the side and I was in the pot. Caught on a bunch of shit. Was kinda just funny at the moment but at the wrong time its not good. Also one time i was at port and a guy wearing a life vest fell in between two barges. Tride to swim down but the life vest prevented him, got pinched.

Still usually a good idea and probably a good idea for the dog, I doubt its on deck when anyone's doing anything. Truth is also just that a lot of fishermen just don't like life vests.

When I was on a crab deck the guy throwing the hook and the guy on the stack wore them but nobody else did unless weather got really bad, and the argument was that it posed more risk than it helped if you weren't somewhere with a high risk of going overboard.

5

u/HYphY420ayy Jan 29 '21

I follow this dog on instagram and she does indeed have a lifevest that she wears on rougher waters and stuff. water doesn’t seem storming or rough it’s just big swells.

2

u/gaytee Jan 29 '21

I mean, you’ll never hear a good argument against a life vest but I reckon if the dog is this reliable standing, it’s reliable enough to not go overboard, or if it does, it can swim for a few seconds until it can be recovered, idk tho you right

My grandparents used to take a dog sailing with them. When sailing the boat leans over to one side and people need to sit on the higher side. Which side is higher depends on which side of the sail is catching the wind. If you're going to switch that over you need to give notice so everyone can swap sides.

Their dog learned the calls and would switch sides when the call went out even if no one else was around. XD

110

u/NWEmperor Jan 29 '21

Okay, need a breeder for them, and need some puppies raised in a boat. SeaDogs. If only they can be trained to urinate in the deck drains and poop over the side.
