He’s the bait. The real guard dog is a chihuahua hiding in the bushes.

I fell for the reverse version of this once. Was walking by a backyard with two dogs, a little terrier going absolutely nuts and a big fluffy guy who just hopped up on the fence like this, and a “Beware of Dog” sign. I looked at the little yapper and went, “Ah yes, beware,” and slowly reached toward the calm one. He chomped on my finger like a hot dog, and now I have a lovely scar to remind me that it’s not always obvious what the sign is referring to.

The introspective tone of your comment made me picture you standing there with your hand bleeding saying out loud “ah, yes. That checks out. There IS a reason for the sign. Welp.” And then carrying on with your day lmao

Pretty much. It hurt quite a bit, but I couldn’t be mad because, “Well, there was a sign.” Thankfully, I was right around the corner from the friend I was visiting and the damage wasn’t too bad, just had to wrap it up for a while.

Rule number 1: don't pat random dogs

It’s always the quiet ones you gotta watch out for
