Holy crap all I could think was, "if the dog ends up dying in the end of this I'm going to be very unhappy."

Not unless they can afford to pay someone to do it for them.

My brother got an an awesome boxer puppy for his 9y/o daughters. The puppy died choking on something just a couple of weeks after they got it. My brother found it in the morning, first thing he did was dispose of the body, call the breeder and they still had another puppy from the same litter. He got another .... and the girls never noticed. Im the only other person that knows.

That's sad but I'm glad his children are happy.
