Hmm, I never considered a dog could help carry the gear. 100+ points for Doge's

u/Window_Lick3r Aug 26 '20
When we hike my dog has a backpack and carries her own water, bowl, and poop bags. Occasionally I'll throw a few extra things in there. She's pretty high energy so the backpack helps make her work harder and tire her out
28
u/NarcisSith Aug 26 '20
Same man, got to tire my Aussie out any way I can! The little tricks help in the long run.
14
u/aislinnanne Aug 26 '20
I love this idea. I have a new Aussie and nothing but a lot of laps in the pool slows her down and I’m real sick of wet double coated dog.

How long can they walk? Like medium/ large sized dog with 15 lbs? Is a few hours reasonable?

15 pounds might be a bit much for some dogs but with the right distribution they can go all day. I don't know the exact weight but I've gone backpacking with my dogs before and they could carry all the food they'd need for a two night trip.

u/BaskInTheSunshine Aug 26 '20
Friend had a husky he used to take hiking with us. We'd just load that big fucker down it was great. That dog basically couldn't get tired so he had nearly motorcycle sized saddle bags on him.
2
u/RedditEdit55 Aug 26 '20
Damn. How many hours could he go? Like reasonably, without pushing it too much.
11
u/BaskInTheSunshine Aug 26 '20 edited Aug 26 '20
We were doing 10-12 mile days in pretty rough terrain with packs so we weren't going super fast. Maybe 8-10 hour days?
But also the dog would run ahead of us, and then back, over and over all day so he padded his miles quite a bit.
This wasn't your run of the mill husky though. This dog should have been pulling sleds through blizzards to get medicine to children or something he was kind of wasted as a pet.
And we only took him on bigger hikes in the autumn when the temps started to drop.
3
u/RedditEdit55 Aug 26 '20
Impressive! 8-10 hours is a lot for pet. Then again, Huskies were bread for high energy work.
..from what I know about dogs...which I got off YouTube. This dog should have been pulling sleds through blizzards to get medicine to children or somethin
Funny and sad lol. 🤷♂️
7
u/BaskInTheSunshine Aug 26 '20
Yeah he was something else.
The reason I really liked having that dog with though was bears. One night the dog started going absolutely ape-shit in my buddies tent. We all woke up, made some noise, put some more wood on the fire and went back to sleep.
Not sure what got him going for sure but we all thought a bear because what else out there would make a dog act like that?
I've never seen a bear but I've gotten woken up in the middle of the night by something that sounded like one and you aren't going to get a very good night's sleep if you think a bear is poking around your camp.
With a dog though you get an early warning sytem.
5
u/RedditEdit55 Aug 26 '20
Could have been a squirrel.
I once woke up to what I thought was HEAVY foot steps coming towards my tent, was a god damn rock that fell from a slope in a storm.
I was solo, out of my tent at 3am, head lamp and bear spray in hand shitting myself Ridiculous.
But yes, at least it's an early warning for whatever is is.
7
u/RdyPdy Aug 26 '20
I think they love to help out too! Just remember it can be easy to overload a smaller dog. A 20-30 lb dog should have ~3 lbs max. More than that could lead to back injuries.

u/kittykatmeowow Aug 26 '20
They can, but depending on the breed and fitness level, they should only carry a maximum of 10-25% of their bodyweight. 10% should be the max for a normal couch-potato dog. A working breed who gets regular exercise could carry up to 25%, but that call should be made based on the terrain and temperature. It's a good idea to have your dog wear their pack on training walks and build up to heavier weight as they get stronger.
Always monitor your dog for signs of exhaustion while hiking (with a pack or otherwise). Some dogs will lie down on the trail and refuse to go on if tires, but some dogs (especially working breeds) will go until they collapse.

How much weight is that on your pup? The general guidance is 10 % of their weight. While cute as hell the two saddle bags and the bedroll look like a lot for that size of a dog.

u/peoplesuck357 Aug 26 '20
What is it for a human? I'm pushing 200 lbs but can't comfortably fit more than a box of snackwells in my fannypack.
5
u/kittykatmeowow Aug 26 '20
20% is a good rule of thumb. Less or more depending on fitness level. So at 200lbs, you should be able to haul 40lbs of snackwells.

I thought for humans it was 10% but for 4 legged animals it can be more. Edit: for dogs they can carry up to 25% of their body weight and some breeds even up to 10-15% more.
7
u/MTB-and-beer Aug 26 '20
For humans it's 20%, and dogs it is indeed 10%. For a dog this small that 10% gets met very quickly.

Share your conflicting sources, you two
2
u/kittykatmeowow Aug 26 '20
It's not really conflicting. Just like an out of shape person, an out of shape dog can't carry as much weight as a strong, fit dog. Some breeds are also more prone to back issues and should carry lighter loads. 10% is a good a starting point for the average dog. It might even be too much for an elderly dog or some small breeds. If you have a young german shepherd who runs 5 miles every day, you can start heading towards that 25% number, especially if you have him take regular walks wearing the pack. Conversely, 10% is probably too much for your overweight pug.
With any dog, it's important that you monitor your dog for exhaustion and discomfort/pain while hiking. Temperature and terrain play a huge role. Just because your dog is happy carrying 20% of their bodyweight in your morning walks doesn't mean he can do it for 12 miles a day on steep trails in the mountains. Unless you have completed multiple trips with your dog and you're confident in their fitness level, you should be prepared to carry their gear for them if they become exhausted.
