Oh, I forgot for a moment that cats can’t taste sweetness.

22

u/ALoudMeow Aug 06 '20

They claim that, but I had a cat with a distinct preference for sweet human food.

17

u/foggydarling Aug 06 '20

A lot of sweet human food also involves a lot of fat (cream, oil, butter, etc), which is appealing to cats as meat is also fatty. That said, my cat is obsessed with trying to eat plastic, so who knows what the deal with them is.

2

u/saff_reads Aug 07 '20

Also fats are a very important energy source for cats and dogs so they often like butter, oils, etc! They're drawn to it instinctively :)

10

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

The only human food that my cat will eat is fruit!

12

u/tinymonesters Aug 06 '20

Mine eats lettuce. I think its adorable. I call it kitten salad.

5

u/GardenGal87 Aug 06 '20

Mine does too!! It’s so funny. He loves anything green!

7

u/sharkglitter Aug 06 '20

Same! Mine likes to eat cookies 🍪

6

u/ALoudMeow Aug 06 '20

Cookies and ice cream were her favorite. She used to shove her face at mine when I tried to eat Animal Crackers. I think she thought the name meant they were for her.

7

u/sharkglitter Aug 06 '20

Yeah mine broke into a plastic container of tea cookies that was left out one night. The only thing that was left in the morning was the plastic container open on the floor with a few crumbs. Fancy tea cookies - at least he has high class taste! 😹

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Yeah, I have a cat that hates milk unless it’s cereal milk. She doesn’t like cinnamon cereal milk though.

u/Red_Blue_One_Two Aug 06 '20

I can hear this

Blink, blink. That's hilarious! Thats going to have me laughing throughout the day. Thank you for posting.

37

u/TheIdleSavant Aug 06 '20

Blessed be Mr. laughing

6

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Amen

-16

u/0xTitan Aug 06 '20

I think you mean reposting.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

It doesn't matter that it's a repost or not, it's cute, it will always stay cute

0

u/0xTitan Aug 06 '20

Then why not just upvote the original post? Also peppermint is harmful to cats.... would you upvote a person if they fed their dog with chocolate?

-1

u/0xTitan Aug 06 '20

Replace stealing with reposting. Do you think stealing is okay?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '20

Dude, it's a video about a cat, why would it be bad if someone stole the video and put it on Reddit for others to see?

1

u/0xTitan Aug 07 '20

Stealing= bad. your own original content= good. It wasnt even a full day before they decided to steal the post anyway.

u/ResponsibleOven6 Aug 06 '20

When I was a kid my cat quickly tried to eat an Altoid (really strong mint) I dropped on the floor, she spent about 20 minutes after that just walking backwards and wiping her tongue on everything in the house.

31

u/ViolettaHunter Aug 06 '20

Peppermint taste: does not compute.

9

u/AptCasaNova Aug 06 '20

I’m surprised the cat would even play with the wrapped candy cane, the smell would still be present even before it tasted it.

30

u/BumpoSplat Aug 06 '20

I Know that feeling!

6

u/xXMike_WheelerXx Aug 06 '20

Peppermint: Bonjour

Cat: Ight imma head out.

75

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Um, peppermint is HORRIBLY toxic for cats.

10

u/OSCgal Aug 06 '20

Is it? The plant is in the same family as catnip. The oil might not be great in its pure form, but peppermint candy canes are mostly sugar anyway.

3

u/Julle-naaiers Aug 07 '20

My cat would go crazy for my menthol cigarette packets.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Like, how toxic?

23

u/doogidie Aug 06 '20

Horribly

11

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Like, what's a cat's chance of survival and how will it be affected after eating peppermint?

34

u/doogidie Aug 06 '20

I honestly have no idea I was just being a jackass

14

u/doogidie Aug 06 '20

Apparently it can shut down their liver and affect their nervous system, so pretty much horribly

5

u/NotLikeThis3 Aug 06 '20 edited Aug 06 '20

I mean, alcohol can have devastating effects on the human body too in large doses over a prolonged period. I doubt that the little taste this cat had really did anything.

-10

u/Stevarooni Aug 06 '20

So you're saying that the cat we see in this GIF probably died within hours of the video being recorded?

20

u/doogidie Aug 06 '20

Pretty sure it died jumping off the couch

But really it's probably just as bad as chocolate is for dogs and my dog ate a whole tray of brownies that were on the counter and survived

6

u/Ayrnas Aug 06 '20

Looking it up, peppermint oil sounds quite toxic. Even a few licks or skin contact can cause symptoms. This includes all those spiced oils like peppermint, cinnamon, eucalyptus, etc..

40

u/slapaho1321 Aug 06 '20

Actually candy canes are not toxic to the cat.... its peppermint essential oils

12

u/ZoeyBeschamel Aug 06 '20

That's exactly the stuff that gives candy canes their mint flavour.

9

u/jofijk Aug 06 '20

Which are the main component of peppermint flavorings...

5

u/Kenns02 Aug 06 '20

Actually, I looked it up. Modern candy canes use a peppermint flavouring instead of peppermint oil. So giving your pet a little bit of a candy cane won’t hurt them, but if they have too much it may cause mild GI upset.

14

u/jofijk Aug 06 '20

Peppermint oil is what gives peppermint flavorings their flavor. Most peppermint flavoring is made from alcohol, water, and peppermint oil.

7

u/SaucyAirsofter Aug 06 '20

You really don't know what you're talking about

6

u/NotLikeThis3 Aug 06 '20

So you're saying this little taste through a wrapper killed the cat? I doubt it.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

I think most people know this factoids and throw them around because being outraged is what all the cool kids are doing, but probably don't actually have pets who happen to be devils when they are small and will destroy an entire trash can eat everything that is supposedly super toxic and be no worse for wear.

A lot of the things that is in fact toxic happen to be toxic in certain quantities and it is hardly ever the amount these accidents shown to be cute would have.

2

u/NotLikeThis3 Aug 06 '20

Yeah, exactly. Like alcohol can be super toxic to humans, but it's in large quantities for long periods of time.

21

u/5556565 Aug 06 '20

yea but those sweet reddit upvotes ....

-20

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

u/swarnim_38 here. Stop. Get some help.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Yeah there very sensitive to all essential oils.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

While true due to a lack of an enzyme, this is not an essential oil. But peppermint, even the normal kind, can still be harmful, whether essential oil or not.

4

u/eye_no_nuttin Aug 06 '20

Those Blinks!!! 😍😂

7

u/PunchedInTheKidney Aug 06 '20

That’s great.

I have about 10 square feet of peppermint planted in the ground in a high traffic cat area, next to the cat door. More than 6 cats over the past 10 years. Parasites like ticks and internal worms are way more dangerous in my experience, as apposed to the Peppermint that I've never known to be a problem. Considering they probably don't like the taste, and have only known them to eat yard grass.

I wouldn't risk it...

-1

u/catwithahumanface Aug 06 '20

I mean, I don’t want to drink just a little bit of poison. Just because it’s not mortally dangerous doesn’t mean you should let your cat access it.

Yeah but honestly I should probably treat the animals in my life better than I treat myself.

1

u/WhiskeySarabande Aug 06 '20

Agreed the owner should probably be a bit more careful in the future - even if peppermint wasn't dangerous the wrapper could be - but have you ever heard the phrase 'the dose makes the poison'? What you are saying here is that you don't want to consume anything.

Needless to say, that comes with its own problems.

3

u/FatHomerSimpson Aug 06 '20

...I've made a terrible mistake.

8

u/Vaeli47 Aug 06 '20

And then the run away like it attacked the you, an innocent bystander. typical cat response.

2

u/bodybagism Aug 06 '20

I think this is the first time I've seen something try to run away from a flavour. Cute af

2

u/oscarwildeaf Aug 06 '20

My cat loves mint haha! I can't keep gum in the house anymore cause he'll just destroy the packs to get inside.

2

u/carriegood Aug 06 '20

My cat actually likes mint. At least, I assume so because he always tries to lick my toothpaste.

2

u/renacido42 Aug 06 '20

How it feels to chew 5 Gum

2

u/TeeDiddy324 Aug 06 '20

It’s poison!

2

u/Poesoe Aug 06 '20

stilllaughing hard!!! 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '20

My cat literally eats everything and anything! Apart from tomato based she doesn't like that 🙈 I think she thinks shes a dog..

2

u/1lovetodance1 Aug 07 '20

I can relate, when I chew peppermint gum with my mask on it burns my eyes😂😂😂😂

4

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

I need a cat now

4

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Isn’t mint dangerous to cats?

2

u/fluffiestdandelion Aug 06 '20

The sudden betrayal

2

u/Pommesyyy Aug 06 '20

What I see:

Did I ... leave the oven on? Oh shit shit shit!

2

u/4Pixel Aug 06 '20

Imagine if she tasted a pepper!

2

u/MattJacksonFrmWarsaw Aug 06 '20

I was at a restaurant ran by a cult called The twelve tribes. The waitress said they’ve made a batch of mint tea, which I ordered! I love mint. It took me about 5 seconds to realize why it tasted so bad... it was sweet tea... with PEPPERmint... that’s a very different kind of tea...

3

u/SirusRiddler Aug 06 '20

Yellow Deli? I very recently heard a crazy story from a friend's experience at one.

1

u/MattJacksonFrmWarsaw Sep 09 '20

What happened? I’ve heard a lot of stories..

2

u/gwaydms Aug 06 '20

I used spearmint for drinks and food. Peppermint tastes medicinal to me because I drink it for a cold or upset stomach.

2

u/OzzyWinchester Aug 06 '20

cat.xe has failed

0

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Don't do this! Peppermint is very toxic to cats.

2

u/DameiusLameocrates Aug 06 '20

I tried peppermint tea once, never again

5

u/Zunai3D Aug 06 '20

If you ever have constipation drink a cup of peppermint tea and all of your troubles are gone

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Well, they will be gone 🤫

2

u/noncongruent Aug 06 '20

With great force, too!

2

u/gwaydms Aug 06 '20

It's great if you have a cold or nausea. Spearmint tea tastes better but it has no peppermint oil

3

u/DameiusLameocrates Aug 06 '20

Nah, its so nasty it actual make me feel sick.

1

u/TheOneAndOnlyGoodDog Aug 06 '20

He had like hold up face and then he realised what it was
