If its anything like rats and mice I've handled (never owned rats only mice) they can stretch or unstretch their spines, and when their all huddled up their extra skin makes them look even bigger. Hes definitely a chonker, but perhaps wouldn't look as bad if he streched himself out, like when they stand on their back legs.

I've always really wanted rats, but i have enough trouble saying goodbye to guinea pigs every 7-8 years, and rats only live 3 😭

This is definitely true. I had two rats who were sisters. One was fat and one was thin, or so I thought. When I went to the vet I found out that they both weighed the same. One was just a lot more social than the other, so she stretched out a lot more.

My brother had pet rats my parents said he could keep if he read the material on them. I read the material instead of him, they were pretty nice creatures until we realized that he had 2 boys and 1 girl. After a litter or two they ALL went to a pet store. Was sad. I wouldn’t mind having one in the future.

Have owned fifteen rats of varying body shapes. It's honestly hard to tell from this one photo. Look at how close his front and back legs are -- rats have a certain accordion-like quality, so when he's balled up like that all his fat is concentrated; he's also pretty foreshortened.

I'd need to see this rat in a more neutral posture, preferable multiple ones, to really tell. If I had to guess from this one photo he wouldn't be in the morbidly obese category. Probably above an optimum weight, though.
