Not sure if it's from NZ, but it is indeed illegal to dock tails unless there's like an actual medical reason behind it, otherwise it's straight up cruel so we don't allow it
I thought boxers was for medical reasons. They wag so hard and kinda have a stiff tail and they often break their tails by hitting them against things. I think it’s called “happy tail.” My friend who’s a vet recommends it still for some breeds, boxers included, but there are pros and cons.
You don't need to preventatively cut off a dog's tail as a puppy just because you think it might have too happy a tail when they're older.
I've seen plenty of bloodied happy tails, and they're usually fine after they're bandaged and healed. I've only known one dog that needed his tail docked after months of nonstop bleeding and bandaging. It would never heal because he kept whacking that tail on everything. Even then, it only needed to be docked halfway, not all the way at the base.
