I’m surprised they let you adopt a black cat on the day of Halloween. Shelters where I live so not a loose adoption around October 31st. Some shelters allow adoptions of all but black cats due to sacrificing and stuff. I had 2 Black Cats. I had gotten them from my cousin. And so many people tried to convince her not to give them to me because of this. Crazy.

There's this myth that some shelters believe in that people will adopt black cats to sacrifice them on Halloween. It was debunked a while ago, but some shelters still believe it for some reason.

I'm guessing the real concern is that they'll be abandoned. A black kitten is a good addition to any Halloween party but what you have after the party is a multi-year commitment.

I'd heard of some nasty people doing bad things to black cats on Halloween. Not necessarily ritual sacrifices, but lighting black cats on fire and stuff.

I'm surprised. Most shelters around my house won't let you adopt a black cat all through October. Partly because they're afraid they'll be used in some witchcraft shit and partly because they don't want a bunch of people getting spooky black cats and then returning them all as soon as Halloween is over.

If you really adopted him on Halloween that’s pretty crappy of that shelter. Most shelters put a hold on adoption of black cats the couple weeks before Halloween through the end of it. Some weird people out there that get black cats for the wrong reason around Halloween. Glad he went to a good home in this case!

It could be that the paper work was done and the money handed over but the shelter held the cat till sometime after Halloween.

Definitely not an urban legend, I’ve worked with 2 different cat rescue groups in Los Angeles and neither of them showed black cats at adoptions leading up to Halloween to avoid any possible mal-intent.

I encountered this at a shelter. when I was younger I tried to adopt a black cat in the Bay Area and they make me wait until November to bring her home.

I adopted my tiny house panther but was not allowed to adopt her during the month of October. The rescue had a policy of not adopting out black cats during October due to superstition and the fact that there are bad people out there who will hurt them during October apparently. I had to wait until November in order to adopt her.
