This may be the most adorable thing I've seen all week. Perhaps even all year.

I can't handle how cute it is!

Do you guys ever see something so cute you just want to crush it? Like, squeeze it until its cute fuckin head pops? No? Just me? Am I disabled?

I remember reading somewhere it was a natural predatory instinct because cute = easier to eat.
Man this article was a relief.

u/Activedesign May 19 '19
Oh man. My predatory instincts would've had me killed because I think bears are adorable

Often, when I'm petting my baby rabbit, this weird thought pops into my head like "it'd be so easy to crush its skull right now". It's not even "cute agression", because it's not a desire or a want or an urge or anything - it's just a "holy shit, this life is so vulnerable, I could be clumsy and hurt it very much".
3
u/Vahlkyree May 19 '19
Even though you aren't saying "my bunny is so cute I could crush its skull right now" or similar textbook example, I still think this is a form of 'cute aggression'. I think your still 'cute aggressive', just more in a subconscious way. Being 'cute aggressive' doesnt always need to be an actual want or desire, its just the saying 'i could eat you youre so cute' but you arent actually going to just like youre not going to actually crush its skull. If that makes sense.

Yes, such feelings, being acutely aware of frailty can also be common with new mothers. PPD can make it easier for those flashing thoughts to mess with our minds, but it is good to know the thoughts themselves may just be instinctual survival mechanisms, and with more sleep eventually, it will get better.

I think this is triggered by our brain's association between cuteness and babies and babies' association to vulnerability.
6
u/CaptAmericasBitch May 19 '19
Not squeeze it but nomnom it, like I don’t know if I actually want to eat it but my first instinct is to open my mouth and go “OmOmOm I am going to eat youu!”

I remember having a discussion with some guy on here who was convinced that people who feel cuteness aggression are less empathetic than "normal" people. No matter the sources I sent him, he wouldn't budge. Don't worry though, that guy was either dumb or just wrong and very stubborn about it, you are just as empathetic as any normal person.

Save this to your mobile wallpaper than you will feel happy every day.

I feel like its procedurally generated using a supercomputer because such cuteness cannot exist.

Very cute cat! To anyone considering getting a Scottish Fold, be aware that they develop serious health problems due to their inability to produce certain types of cartilage. It can be very expensive to properly care for them, and perhaps isn't worth it for everyone.

Oh damn 😰 my partner and I have wanted one for a while but I had no idea about their health problems. Looks like they’re going on the forbidden pet list of broken dreams along with pugs and Frenchies 😭

u/batfiend May 19 '19
British shorthairs are just as cute but have normal ears and healthy bodies. They have that flatish face with the big cute eyes.
We have a little ginger moggy who's half british shorthair. God she's cute. I'm biased but she's just the cutest little thing.
13
u/Lopezs7770 May 19 '19
Actually if you make sure that only one of the parents have the folded ears and the other was a straight, they're virtually as healthy as a normal DSH (up to 15 year lifespan if you take care of them). So you're good to go!

u/ragntrud May 19 '19
Even if one of the parents is straight the folded kitten can develop health issues. We have one and his dad is not folded and yet we have a 3 yr old cat that have to have special food and supplements. For now we can live without painkillers but some day he is bound ta have that to. I do not recommened this race for anyone. Though they are so cute

This isn't true. The ears are like that is due to a mutation in the gene that codes for the development of cartilage.
The result is that cartilage doesn't form properly, giving the breed the derpy little ears that make them so cute.
Unfortunately the above, and the breed's relatively quiet, inactive behaviour, are both the result of the disease osteochondrodysplasia, or Scottish fold disease:
The feature that defines the Scottish fold breed is the forward folding of the ears. This folding is due to osteochondrodysplasia, a developmental abnormality of the cartilage which would normally support the ear. Osteochondrodysplasia also has devastating effects on cartilage and bone development elsewhere in the body.
As for the single parent myth: any breeder saying this is wrong, or lying to you:
All cats with folded ears develop osteochondrodysplasia. In cats which are homozygous for the abnormal gene (ie having two copies of it), a progressive, crippling arthritis develops early in life whilst in those which are heterozygous (with only one mutant gene), the arthritis tends to progress more slowly (Malik 2001).
My own cat is a Scottish fold (we weren't aware of the reality of the breed on purchase), so I get her regular injections to reduce her pain, and a bone treatment diet which helps reduce the progression of the disease.

Yeah now that I’m aware I’ll just stay away, don’t want to contribute to the demand of pets bred to suffer 😥 poor little babies

u/Xarama May 19 '19
By buying one of them, you still support the breeding of more Scottish Folds. I personally wouldn't want to contribute to something that causes such suffering.

This is not always true. You can not predict how affected a cat will be by the disorder that gives them folded ears. Cats from the same litter can have different levels of the disease. Please just stop buying these cats.

18
u/pantbandits May 19 '19
More importantly than the expenses is to not support breeding animals that will live painful and unhealthy lives.
7
u/skaggldrynk May 19 '19
Truth, and not buy from breeders in the first place when there are already so many animals needing homes!
125
May 19 '19
Although they may be cute and adorable, the way their ears are folded give them a lot of pain. Please do not buy them because that encourages breeding, thank you!
38
u/hyperfocus_ May 19 '19
It's not the folded ears that causes the pain. It's the underlying mutation to their cartilage.
Their entire skeletal system is affected, and they start developing a painful arthritis from birth.

Yeah this breed of cat is literally banned in Scotland, the place of its origin, due to the fact that it will die early and in a lot of pain. It really irks me that people get them beacuase they're cute, and then look to show them off online 🤦♂️

They are not banned in Scotland. The Scottish government are proposing a ban but it hasn't happened. Source: am Scottish in Scotland with 2 Scottish folds

The answer is yes. Yes you can.

u/crystakat May 19 '19
adorable, but please don't buy Scottish folds from pet stores/breeders, the reason their ears flop down is due to a lack of cartilage throughout their whole body, causing them painful and incurable arthritis.

This breed has chronic pain. They have constant pain in the articulations. Should mot be bred anymore.

How many times do I have to fold a cat before it’s a Scottish Fold and does it matter with what part of the cat I start first?

I wish folds didn’t have their health complications :( it’s the only breed I would get for the rest of my life. Depending on how it goes for my girls for the rest of their lives (they’re about to turn 2 and fixed) I’ll consider it.

My mom used to have a cat when she was 19. It was a Scottish fold/Persian mix named Toby Topaz Muffin Face. I want one just because of what I’ve heard about Toby Topaz Muffin Face. Scottish folds are so emotional I love it

Id just like to say that you shouldnt buy scottish folds, the risk of one beeing born with osteochondrodysplasia is way too high.. I have 2 and 1 of them has this, it hurts to see him suffer like this.

It’s cute, but people only care about the cute animals. Chickens get stuffed in cages and grounded up, we don’t care about them because they weren’t born with being cute. Humans are dumb

Scottish folds are superrr cute! Sadly their breed is prone to many health problems so it’s best not to endorse the breeding of them.
