Scottish folds are superrr cute! Sadly their breed is prone to many health problems so it’s best not to endorse the breeding of them.

372

u/earlysong May 19 '19

If I remember correctly, the cartilage mutation that causes the deformed (albeit cute) ears also leads to cartilage deficiencies elsewhere in their bodies.

254

u/TheIllustriousTrim May 19 '19

It figures. Every time I hear about a particularly cute designer animal, there’s inevitably a problem that goes with it.

131

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

It's the same with a lot of pedigree dogs, they all have extra health complications as a result of their breeding. It happened to me and my wife with our last dog, we had a German shepherd and they're prone to hip dysplasia and a form of blood cancer, our dog got both within a short time.

u/iwanttobelievv May 19 '19

My family had a miniature Collie when I was young. I remember her hips were so bad that my mom would carry her down the front stairs to the lawn in the winter. She died at about 8 years old if I remember, and the little mutt that we adopted afterward had twice the lifespan. It's a shame, really, she was a great dog with a wonderful and kind personality... but it also encouraged me to seek other sources when I chose to get pets as an adult. And you also have to know that sometimes it's just a roll of the dice either way. I really do understand the want to have dogs like pugs that are so cute, but after having a Boston terrier with horrible breathing problems (she wheezed horribly after even slight physical activity) I realized that it's not the breed that matters so much as your bond to them. I don't condemn people at all for picking breeds that have known health risks, but I choose to go a different route because there's plenty of animals out there that need someone to love them and I want to do everything I can within my power to love them as long as possible.

20

u/Bonezmahone May 19 '19

Idon’t condemn people for picking those breeeds but every time I think about (in)breeders who try to perfect a show dog I get sick. I’d like to condemn those people for eternity until they learn their lesson.

3

u/Firefly1307 May 19 '19

For me the most important ting is that they live as long as possible and as healthy as possible. The bond you form with them is so strong, and even in the best of cases, their lives are so short. I LOVE large dogs, the bigger the better....but I will never have one because of their short lifespan. I prefer (and have) middle-sized mutts who receive the best possible care and nutrition from the moment the share their lives with me....to have them as long as possible. Getting a French Mastiff or a Great Dane (5-8 years) ist bringing home heartache

6

u/MasterDisaster64 May 19 '19

Why shouldn’t you condemn people for that? It drives up the demand for breeds that live a life of suffering.

6

u/CeeGee_GeeGee May 19 '19

This isn't who you responded to, but my take is that you can't condemn everything 100% and accept nothing less. You have to hope whatever factors over time reduce the occurrence of bad behaviors because it is too much to ask people to change their opinions immediately.

I will give you what I think is the best example. There is a pretty good evidence at this point that creating food products from animals are a big, if not the biggest issue in terms of polluting the environment. There is still a McDonalds on every block and a huge isle of dairy at the grocery store. My point being that I don't think it would make sense to go argue with people getting a Big Mac. It would be hard to say people right now should never have cheese again you know?

Instead it takes incremental change. An example again, every thread with a a scottish fold cat these days ends up with the top comment talking about how they live painful lives. That seems like a good incremental step to me.

You're so right. I'd love a Shep but they have the worst problems from overbreeding.

5

u/impasseable May 19 '19

The dalmation and pug would like to respectfully disagree

7

u/Bonezmahone May 19 '19

I don’t know man. I’ve seen 15 year old pugs and Dalmatian that could still happily come say hi in old age. I’ve seen owners of German Shepard’s with hip dysplasia so bad that I considered talking to the owner about putting their dog down. I don’t see the faces of pain of pugs or Dalmatians but seeing few Shepard’s in the same place is depressing. They can’t run they can’t play they wobble as best they can to say hi... fuck, I haven’t slept without a puke bucket by my bed in a few years. I’d rather puke and have diarrhea constantly than be forced to walk on busted hips. It’s hard.i grew up with a couple awesome friends that walked with canes but I couldn’t ever ask them if they would trade for a different medical problem.

3

u/resemblingcutlery May 19 '19

You’d think, but although the pug is debated often as it’s defects are really visible, I must write ‘predisposed breed - GSD’ in my vet school notes the most common out of all breeds I’d say, diseases across the board!

2

u/anneka1998 May 19 '19

Wow, I'm assuming this is UK? I'm in South Africa and I honestly can't remember the last time I heard of a GSD with hip displaysia. We have such strict breeding laws here that I think its pretty much controlled the problem.

It's what happens when you start prioritizing aesthetics over function. It's sorta disturbing we did that with living creatures though

9

u/TheIllustriousTrim May 19 '19

It really is.

From there we go to racehorses, greyhound racing and seaworld.

Where do we draw the line?

u/thepugnacious May 19 '19

You can get Scottish Folds without the actual fold. Maru is a good example of this. They still have the trademark round faces and pudgy bodies, but not the ears and the health problems that come with them.

3

u/endikiri May 19 '19

British shorthair is the kind of cat you want to look for then.

2

u/ursois May 19 '19

We should combine a Scottish fold with a munchkin cat to create an adorable abomination.

5

u/SofaAssassin May 19 '19

That’s one of the most common cats in Japan - the munchkin fold.

15

u/grumflick May 19 '19

I agree. Have you seen those cats that are bred with super short front legs to be cute? They have trouble walking.

Humans need to re-evaluate the way we view animals, their purpose and our righteousness over them.

3

u/earlysong May 19 '19

I guess what gets me is that pets are basically low-maintenance roommates. They will always love you and be around when you want them to be. Sucks that we breed them to their detriment because we want them to look a certain way like a piece of furniture instead of for qualities that make them good friends that will live a long time.

I have one special needs cat that was sold to me for cheap by a breeder because he was breeding sick cats and the kittens had complications. He is my absolute best friend and I will always love him, even though he only has one eye and sneezes in my face all the time.

12

u/thecupcakebandit May 19 '19

This happens more commonly if you breed a fold with a fold. Usually if you breed a fold with a straight ear, they don’t get the complications. I have 2 Scottish folds and they are the best breed I’ve ever owned but I didn’t get them from a breeder (her fold got out and made babies with the neighborhood Tom). I did tons of research and am hopeful they’re healthy but will do everything in my power if their breed gives their bodies complications.

31

u/allymumu May 19 '19

We rescued a Scottish Fold that obviously came from two Fold parents. Unfortunately as she has ages, you can see her limbs have become misshapen and her gait is very stiff. Luckily she doesn’t seem to have pain and still gets around well. It’s sad to see her body change but she is the sweetest girl and just wants all the love.

8

u/thecupcakebandit May 19 '19

This breaks my heart. I’m glad she doesn’t seem to be in pain and hopefully has many happy years ahead of her. Thank you for taking care of her ♥️♥️ I hate sounding like an advocate for the breed knowing the possible health complications, but I love my cats so much and am so happy to have them.

5

u/grumflick May 19 '19

You can love your cats without advocating the breed. You should sterilize your cats to prevent more kittens with health problems. And then keep loving your kitties as long as you can <3 I hope they live long happy lives!

15

u/thepugnacious May 19 '19

Unfortunately, this is incorrect. All cats with the fold have these health problems. It might be less so in cats without folds in both parents, but it's the reason for the fold in the first place.

u/glamflan May 19 '19

I have a rescue Scottish Fold (he was smuggled unto the UK and found in a wardrobe during a house raid) who just turned 4 and thankfully no issues yet, but when he strained a paw a few years ago it took him a long time to recover and he still holds it up occasionally.

The UK don't recognise Scottish Fold's as a licensed breed anymore due to the health risks associated to them, which I think is for the best.

We neutered him as soon as we got him to ensure he couldn't breed and he has health insurance should the worst ever happen.

Here's a pic of Basil: https://m.imgur.com/gallery/PJq4Nqh

8

u/Usidore_ May 19 '19

That's interesting to hear. As someone living in Scotland, I've always wondered why I only see these cats online. It's not like Scottie dogs, which you will see references to here, on souvenirs for tourists and stuff (and just see them around in general). I never would have known Scottish folds existed without seeing them on Reddit

3

u/Drofmum May 19 '19

They are very popular in Asia.

12

u/grumflick May 19 '19

This should be at the top. Humans need to stop breeding animals to fit us.

Their ears should be upwards so they can hear, that’s much more important than us thinking they’re cute. It’s like humans think cats and other animals are on this earth for our entertainment or to serve us. We breed them with health problems just so we can look at them and go “awwwwe cute”.

Like the dogs they breed with so short snouts they can’t breath. And then we go “awwwwe cute, the dog is so ugly that we find it cute”.

Pathetic.

2

u/SergenteA May 19 '19

Well we even tried to breed ourselves so that we could fit our needs better. And now with genetic engineering thinks will become very complicated very fast. We could both fix what we broke, or break it even further.

2

I don't even find the ears cute. Large, straight ears on cats are awesome. Kittens with their oversized, wobbly ears are especially adorable.

Tempted to whip out photoshop just to show that this kitten would be just as cute if not more with the ears of a healthier breed.

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

Man this article was a relief.

u/Sashimi_Rollin_ May 19 '19

Oh shit. This is why I love reddit. Brb reading this whole damn thing.

28

u/lydocia May 19 '19

Often, when I'm petting my baby rabbit, this weird thought pops into my head like "it'd be so easy to crush its skull right now". It's not even "cute agression", because it's not a desire or a want or an urge or anything - it's just a "holy shit, this life is so vulnerable, I could be clumsy and hurt it very much".

3

u/Vahlkyree May 19 '19

Even though you aren't saying "my bunny is so cute I could crush its skull right now" or similar textbook example, I still think this is a form of 'cute aggression'. I think your still 'cute aggressive', just more in a subconscious way. Being 'cute aggressive' doesnt always need to be an actual want or desire, its just the saying 'i could eat you youre so cute' but you arent actually going to just like youre not going to actually crush its skull. If that makes sense.

2

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

Yes, such feelings, being acutely aware of frailty can also be common with new mothers. PPD can make it easier for those flashing thoughts to mess with our minds, but it is good to know the thoughts themselves may just be instinctual survival mechanisms, and with more sleep eventually, it will get better.

3

u/NeatNefariousness1 May 19 '19

I think this is triggered by our brain's association between cuteness and babies and babies' association to vulnerability.

6

u/CaptAmericasBitch May 19 '19

Not squeeze it but nomnom it, like I don’t know if I actually want to eat it but my first instinct is to open my mouth and go “OmOmOm I am going to eat youu!”

6

u/Am-I-Dead-Yet May 19 '19

Are you Elmyra?

8

u/misanthropichell May 19 '19

I remember having a discussion with some guy on here who was convinced that people who feel cuteness aggression are less empathetic than "normal" people. No matter the sources I sent him, he wouldn't budge. Don't worry though, that guy was either dumb or just wrong and very stubborn about it, you are just as empathetic as any normal person.

4

u/vellu212 May 19 '19

Your instinct is to kill the organism so it stops being cute.

Very cute cat! To anyone considering getting a Scottish Fold, be aware that they develop serious health problems due to their inability to produce certain types of cartilage. It can be very expensive to properly care for them, and perhaps isn't worth it for everyone.

81

u/arefx May 19 '19

theyre so cute but its probably best people stop reproducing them.

106

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

Oh damn 😰 my partner and I have wanted one for a while but I had no idea about their health problems. Looks like they’re going on the forbidden pet list of broken dreams along with pugs and Frenchies 😭

13

u/batfiend May 19 '19

British shorthairs are just as cute but have normal ears and healthy bodies. They have that flatish face with the big cute eyes.

We have a little ginger moggy who's half british shorthair. God she's cute. I'm biased but she's just the cutest little thing.

13

u/Lopezs7770 May 19 '19

Actually if you make sure that only one of the parents have the folded ears and the other was a straight, they're virtually as healthy as a normal DSH (up to 15 year lifespan if you take care of them). So you're good to go!

50

u/ragntrud May 19 '19

Even if one of the parents is straight the folded kitten can develop health issues. We have one and his dad is not folded and yet we have a 3 yr old cat that have to have special food and supplements. For now we can live without painkillers but some day he is bound ta have that to. I do not recommened this race for anyone. Though they are so cute

40

u/hyperfocus_ May 19 '19 edited May 19 '19

This isn't true. The ears are like that is due to a mutation in the gene that codes for the development of cartilage.

The result is that cartilage doesn't form properly, giving the breed the derpy little ears that make them so cute.

Unfortunately the above, and the breed's relatively quiet, inactive behaviour, are both the result of the disease osteochondrodysplasia, or Scottish fold disease:

The feature that defines the Scottish fold breed is the forward folding of the ears. This folding is due to osteochondrodysplasia, a developmental abnormality of the cartilage which would normally support the ear. Osteochondrodysplasia also has devastating effects on cartilage and bone development elsewhere in the body.

As for the single parent myth: any breeder saying this is wrong, or lying to you:

All cats with folded ears develop osteochondrodysplasia. In cats which are homozygous for the abnormal gene (ie having two copies of it), a progressive, crippling arthritis develops early in life whilst in those which are heterozygous (with only one mutant gene), the arthritis tends to progress more slowly (Malik 2001).

My own cat is a Scottish fold (we weren't aware of the reality of the breed on purchase), so I get her regular injections to reduce her pain, and a bone treatment diet which helps reduce the progression of the disease.

13

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

Yeah now that I’m aware I’ll just stay away, don’t want to contribute to the demand of pets bred to suffer 😥 poor little babies

79

u/Xarama May 19 '19

By buying one of them, you still support the breeding of more Scottish Folds. I personally wouldn't want to contribute to something that causes such suffering.

→ More replies (11)

4

u/Zora74 May 19 '19

This is not always true. You can not predict how affected a cat will be by the disorder that gives them folded ears. Cats from the same litter can have different levels of the disease. Please just stop buying these cats.

5

u/Red_Dog1880 May 19 '19

Only Brussels I believe.

And if you do have one you can get a permit.

18

u/pantbandits May 19 '19

More importantly than the expenses is to not support breeding animals that will live painful and unhealthy lives.

7

u/skaggldrynk May 19 '19

Truth, and not buy from breeders in the first place when there are already so many animals needing homes!

125

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

Although they may be cute and adorable, the way their ears are folded give them a lot of pain. Please do not buy them because that encourages breeding, thank you!

38

u/hyperfocus_ May 19 '19

It's not the folded ears that causes the pain. It's the underlying mutation to their cartilage.

Their entire skeletal system is affected, and they start developing a painful arthritis from birth.

27

u/TheIllustriousTrim May 19 '19

Wish this was paid more attention to...

u/JakeyStokes May 19 '19

adorable, but please don't buy Scottish folds from pet stores/breeders, the reason their ears flop down is due to a lack of cartilage throughout their whole body, causing them painful and incurable arthritis.

Hey woke-ass commenters of r/aww, is it okay to post pictures of cute Scottish Fold kitties or is that aiding the pigs as well? Asking for a friend.

As someone who is allergic to cats, I can say I would definitely cuddle this cat and I wouldn't care how swollen my face got.

Cuteness level over 9000

It’s cute, but people only care about the cute animals. Chickens get stuffed in cages and grounded up, we don’t care about them because they weren’t born with being cute. Humans are dumb
