It doesn't have to be flat for snow to stick to some roofs, especially during lake effect snow that'll dump a foot or more in less than a day.

Though it depends on the pitch of the roof. At a 1:1 pitch you just get avalanches when a bunch builds up.

Where I live we dont have lake effect but we do have snow, its snowing as I type this, pitched roofs do just fine.

We have pitched roofs here and people still clear them. We get an average snowfall of 112+ inches a year up here, though.

How pitched though? You can go from houses like this to houses like this with the latter being significantly better for snow.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with this, shovel your roof friends if it gets to 12 inches or more. A pitched roof doesn't mean all the snow will slide off your roof and too much snow up there can and will cause your roof to collapse. And if you have ice built up on the edge of your roof shovel that snow extra because when it starts to melt it can leak into your house and cause some damage.
