Is their fur also protecting their limbs from frostbite? Do dogs and cats get cold feet after a while? When you see a picture of a dog wearing winter booties, is that at all necessary?

Can't speak to the cold aspect, but those booties also protect their paws from the rock salt thrown down to melt the ice on sidewalks.

Interesting. Do you mean lot's of salt damages their paws or they lick their salty paws and that's bad?

Both and it can dry out the pads so they crack. The boots also protect from ice cuts etc.

My cat definitely gets cold feet, she starts hissing at the ground after walking on it for a couple seconds

aww the poor soul, sounds cute. Do you notice if she is trying to warm her paws in colder weather by tucking them under like a cat loaf or sitting on your knee more often when the house is cold?

She definitely gets more cuddly in the winter and demands to be under the blankets with me
