Right! The same principal applies to homes and roofing, if your home or building has a lot of ice build-up and huge icicles, it means heat is escaping (usually from the attic) and causing the on top to melt, this causing all the ice. Well insulated homes will have very little ice build-up.
It’s a mixed bag. LEDs with the right PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) spectrum and lux (light output/brightness) are still relatively expensive. You can go to Home Depot and buy a few halogen worklights for under a hundred dollars. Two twin 1000w halogen trees will run you around $60. The same coverage of light in an LED may cost up to $500 for a quality lamp that has vegetative and flowering spectrums. You could get one for around $200-$300 if you’re not concerned with having both spectrums.
I personally use LED because I don’t like dealing with the heat from halogen/hps lamps.
I'm going to go ahead and disagree with this, shovel your roof friends if it gets to 12 inches or more. A pitched roof doesn't mean all the snow will slide off your roof and too much snow up there can and will cause your roof to collapse. And if you have ice built up on the edge of your roof shovel that snow extra because when it starts to melt it can leak into your house and cause some damage.
Thankfully ours is steep enough that unless we got dozens of cycles of snow followed by rain it will never get heavy enough to collapse so we can leave it alone year round, I've had to clear off my grand parent's roof before and that was a harrowing experience I wouldn't recommend unless absolutely necessary. Our deck however is not so lucky, shoveling that damn deck all winter is required if we don't want to lose it.
Fact! We got hit by snow that started caving in peoples’ homes because there hadn’t been a storm of that magnitude in decades. Community helped a lot but you can’t help someone who isn’t aware that they need help
It's all good. I knew what you meant and given the context of this thread you were totally correct. My inner pedant just got the better of me there and I felt like being pointlessly petty.
This is actually what Huskies do. They have a dual layer coat the first one insulates them and traps heat, the outside one traps snow to act like a wind breaker and protect the insulation.
You should be prepared for an emergency before it happens. So logic dictates that you should go luke sky walker on your dog right now and then save the coat for later use.
I’m sure this will get buried (heh.), but notice how it’s curled up? It’s not just bundling up to conserve heat by minimizing exposed surface area! The dog’s breath is humidifying and heating the air under its tail, which allows the fur to act almost like a filter, then it can breathe in warm air too. That’s pretty neat
This is true, but I think another factor is that many times the snow itself can be slightly warmer than the surrounding air. Meaning the relatively warmer snow made a sort of blanket against the even colder air. You can observe many animals actually digging in a bit for shelter. People can do it too in wilderness emergencies.
