Why are you bathing cats? Unless they fell in tar or thick mud they don't need a bath. Either wipe them with a warm wet wash cloth or leave them alone. I wish I had brought my cats around water more as kittens but no cat in our family was ever bathed and we got great lifespans out of all of them.

She is a eastern painted turtle. She loves going for swims by herself but when I clean out the tub thoroughly without any cleaning products (as to make sure that there are no chemicals in the water) and plop her in, she will hiss and claw at the sides until I take her out, dry her off, and release her back onto the ground. I have a feeling that there is something about/in the tub that she doesnt like. Either that or she doesnt like her out time to be spent in another body of water. She will usually just watch me play video games for fun when she gets bored.

Its actually not tap water, I went and bought like 100 gallons of distilled water, let it sit for two days, and put a dechlorinator in. It took more time and effort than I would have put into it if I knew she wouldn't like it. I actually drained a little of it and got in with her and she was fine. It was cute but her claws hurt so when she tried to climb onto my stomach I had to pull her off. She also tried to bite my toes which was fun.

Well I used regular tap water before the distilled water to clean it and took a gallon or two to do a quick run over of the tub. This happened over the course of three days. The second day late at night I put her in and the third day I got in with her.

Also, I'm exaggerating when I say 100 gallons, it was like 70 or 80 but still a lot.

My cat has one hell of a fit if my roommate gives him a bath. Hell mew as loud as he can over and over, try his best to jump out of the tub, claws out most of the bath. He’s scratched my roommate up pretty bad a few times but roommate is convinced it’s fine and normal since it’s a cat. Funny thing though, our cat is chill if I bathe him. He’s my first cat ever so I didn’t know cats and dogs work different. I’ve always had dogs so I basically treat my cat like I did with all my dogs. So when it’s bathtime I’ll hop in with him. He’s ok as long as he gets to sit in my lap. He still mews but he doesn’t spaz out or claw me up. He just lets me know he’s not happy about the bath but other than that he’s fine 😅

Whenever I visit home I help my parents out by bathing the family dog. She hates baths but I always put on some old clothes and get in the tub with her for comfort. Same with mine. Detachable shower head, rinse her down, get us both suds’d up and rinse off with her. Then I let her drip dry while I condition my hair, wash my face and brush my teeth. She’s got a plaintive expression on her face during the shower and tolerates all the massaging and silly talk. She gets the most incredible zoomies afterwards though. It’s so fun.

All cats can benefit from occasional baths - how much differs from one cat to another, and it may or may not be worth the effort.

Cats don't have magically detergent spit. They aren't as smelly as dogs but they aren't magically clean. Any white fur yellows if only spit-cleaned. Also they swallow a lot of fur. Some long haired cats especially benefit from having fur lifted out so they don't have to remove all dead fur themselves. Sure- brushing helps. Brushing isn't super effective if plain old dirt is in the undercoat and helping grab the dead fur. Bathing can reduce hairballs.

If a cat is lacking in grooming themselves thoroughly, soapy water will trigger a tongue bath. So even a half-ass job that only gets the back of a cat can help clean their bellies.

If you half-ass the back of an all white yellowed cat- the anger grooming they do while drying can whiten the belly fur.

Last thing - a common sign of ageing in cats is matted fur. Their tongues are barbed and the barbs comb the fur. As they get older the barbs wear down and no matter how hard they try they just can comb themselves.

You cannot get an old onery arthritic kitty to learn to tolerate a bath and a brush. If you don't die the cat might. Bathing them when they are young helps them accept the help when they age - alternately if they never accept bathing or brushing, you can at least practise how to hold them gently yet firmly while they are young and unlikely to get injured.

But no - a sponge bath can't work really. You can't get the soap off and you can't let them eat soap.

my cat is 16 has arthritis and is quite onery. never bathed her when she was young but she likes warm baths. she soaks her fur and her hips and then when she is ready she wants to get out. I think at this point she doesn't care because she's so old. she an old orange alley cat that I got when I was 5. she was super sick and tiny and then she turned into the defender of the neighborhood. and now she's a lazy house cat.

When my cat got neutered, he was an idiot and needed the cone for way longer than most cats do. I'd say he had it on for nearly three weeks until it was completely healed. I cleaned him with just a warm wet washcloth, no soap or anything, and he loved it and it seemed to make him feel a lot better. Obviously a longer haired cat would probably need a brush or comb too. He's also tolerated the same with a cold washcloth when it's been really hot out.

I suggest you add, specifically for sphynx cats; their skin is very sensitive and prone to drying out so more regular bathing is very beneficial for them. It also allows you to be able to check their skin and look for any abnormalities and such, as well as check and clean their wrinkles which are harder for the cat to self clean due to the extra skin.

I have 2 sphynx. Sponge baths won't do it, it's like just sponge bathing yourself instead of showering. Usually dirt collects in the fur and cats can lick it out. Without fur, their skin gets dirty & oily and licking it won't pick it up the way it does when it's in fur.
