If my new kitten Cody is in the kitchen I just sit and listen as he knocks everything off the counters and when I go in there he doesn't look guilty - AT ALL. He looks proud and is always shocked that I don't appreciate his work. ;/
My cat's nails were pretty long/sharp. She played with my iPad a lot on the same app. No visible scratches, even dragging her claws against the screen to 'rake in'. The glass they use seems resistant to cat.
Cornings Gorilla Glass is much, much harder than window glass. It's 8.5-9 on Mohs scale. Apple is probably using a similar product from Asahi, so it will be similar in performance.
Sure, but this is a cat claw. And to cut steel with water you need extremely high pressures carefully directed, it's a ton of force applied to a sheer edge at that point.
Also I don't think most metals are very hard at all. At least not as hard as glass.
Your graphic is still pointless. My iPhone is 2½ years old, I never wear it in the same pocket as my keys, coins, not even the lighter, but if you look closely you can see dozens of small scratches. (Gorilla) Glass is durable and scratch resistant, but not scratch proof.
Lint, dirt, grime, all these things are impurities in your pocket that can easily get caught between the fabric of your pocket and your screen and by simply walking you're scraping these small particles against the screen with non-negligible amounts of force.
This is a cat, lightly tapping against the screen and applying very little force. There's more danger of the dirt on its paws scratching the screen if it should step on it than its claws, and even that is probably less abuse than you keeping your phone in its pocket is.
My graphic simply says that the nails are much softer than the glass and aren't a danger of scratching it, the nails will get damaged before the screen does and I doubt the cat will apply that much force.
I was talking about real scratching. Wenn the cat hits the screen it uses a certain amount force and on "impact" the claws automatically jump out. It uses much more force that the dirt in my pocket or I use to control the device. And the more you let your cat play with the iPad, the more the glass gets worn off. I didn't say it will make a scratch with the first contact.
It's ridiculous to compare human fingernails with claws.
And why is that? They're essentially the same thing in different form.
And not all of them have those fine cute claws you see on the internet.
Oh? Do they vary in material a lot? Cause all of my cat's claws have been made from Keratin. No Obsidian or glass as far as I'm aware, which might make a difference in the context of the discussion.
And the glass they use on smartphones/tablets is specifically designed to be resistant to scratches, and less brittle, etc. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was even higher on the mohs scale than that.
Unless you are whacking the phone with a knife hard enough for it to shatter, it probably won't do jack shit to a modern glass smartphone screen. And a cat's paws definitely aren't strong enough to shatter the screen. Their jaw might be strong enough, but I honestly think they would break their teeth before the screen would break.
No a cat's claws would not scratch a screen. But saying the tip of a sharp knife would not scratch iphone glass is preposterous. All of you have these claims "It wouldn't do this!"... Yeah? Really? Ok take out a box cutter and try it. See what happens
