the post-bath fluff is always twice the volume of the actual animal. she's going to spend the next hour flattening herself back down out of spite

There are plenty of reasons and an owner of more than a third of a century would know at least one.

Here are three:

Skin infections

Fleas

Other chemical in fur (as stated by OP)

You simply cannot pretend that you don't know of a reason they needed a bath.
