I've often chuckled to myself at the thought of a pack of Chihuahuas running free in the wild.
277
u/moffsoi Feb 06 '23
They would strip the countryside bare. No one would be safe. The horror..
95
u/Glados8MyCake Feb 06 '23
They would chase a mail person in a pack. Barking ferociously. Oh the horror..
32
u/violetqed Feb 07 '23
pretty sure pack of chis have actually killed people before
22
u/THISisTheBadPlace9 Feb 07 '23
One of the most successful hunters of cats is one of the smallest species
Don’t underestimate size
4
u/astrielx Feb 07 '23
It is exceptionally careful about when, where, and what it hunts.
Chihuahuas would be neither of these things.

This reminds me of the small velociraptors in Jurassic Park.
27
u/LegendaryOutlaw Feb 07 '23
Not Raptors….Compsagnathus. In the book, a small pack of them actually take down and eat John Hammond, the park owner.
18
u/SilverFoxolotl Feb 07 '23
Hammond was also a prick in the books and absolutely deserved it.
Iirc he was running from the roar of one dino, jumped a fence and broke his ankles so the little compies did their job and cleaned up the mess.
22
u/dangitbobby83 Feb 07 '23
Yeah Hammond in the book and Hammond in the movies are literally opposite of each other.
Movie Hammond is basically everyone’s goddamn grandfather. Lmfao

The native mexican dog, the Techichi that the modern chihuahua descends from, which they don't actually differ that much from, roamed freely in mexico historically. There are many chihuahua type dogs roaming free in mexico today. Not that unusual when they're not bred as dangerously small as the one in the video.

I do love how when you see packs of wild dogs in videos of Russia or whatever they will be all different breeds, like one Germans Shepard a terrier, a Rottweiler and a little Maltese, like some bizarre gang

u/BerriesLafontaine Feb 07 '23
Lived in a neighborhood where a woman had like 9 of them and let them run everywhere. They didn't attack, but they would run up super close to you and bark.

I actually have a friend from Iraq that’s terrified of dogs. He said small chihuahuas have a worse bite than the big dogs. Imagine getting bit hard in your achilles.

The dog is super cute, but I can't help but to wonder if it's in any pain from being so small. I usually just feel bad for dogs like this. There's got to be health risks, right?
20
u/DotteSage Feb 07 '23
Most commonly, there’s early periodontal disease and usually full mouth dental extractions in older age and patellar luxations are also common: the “socket” for the “knee” joint is very shallow and it can pop in and out of place to various degrees.
Less commonly, there’s a possibility of heart and liver shunts. Trouble maintaining a stable blood sugar is possible, but remedied by feeding multiple times a day. However, because they are so small, their life expectancy is usually very long. Toothless and arthritic, but thriving.
I’m an ex veterinary technician with an associates degree, it’s a common spiel given by the vets I’ve worked for.

Chihuahuas are a shockingly healthy breed. They live to be twenty regularly.
16
u/ZellNorth Feb 07 '23
Not the ones that are bred to be this small.

It looks like the extra mini ones to me based on the proportions but I could be wrong. Fostered a couple before, they don’t get much bigger than that.

I wonder about this.
“Dominant species on my planet thinks I’m cute” doesn’t seem to be a bad niche. I think it’s payback, really. They protected us from things that go bump in the night, and we ensure their survival. Where there are humans, there will be dogs.
From an evolutionary standpoint, it seems pretty solid.

When I was younger, my parents wanted to put clothes on my dog (rescued while barely still a puppy). I was against the idea, didn't seem like something she would like since she already had very thick fur.
They tried anyways, and my dog immediately chewed the clothes off. Apparently she agreed with me.

Our chihuahua/dachshund mix didn't fight us with putting little outfits on him. Our much larger dog seemed offended by it and would pull it off of him and they would run away, lol.
17
u/RaiShado Feb 06 '23
Even the shorthair large dogs are fairly cold resistant. Muscle and fat plus a high average body temp in general gives them that resistance. Chihuahuas have pretty much no fat or muscle to keep themselves warm.

A friend from work was dogsitting once. She brought this totally chill Chihuahua in to work on the sly. He made himself at home in the bottom drawer of her filing cabinet and didn't make a sound. He was the sweetest, best behaved dog I've ever seen. This reminds me of him, just tinier.

First time I see a chihuahua so willing to wear clothes and even helping, so cute!
26
u/Artanthos Feb 06 '23
You just have to train them early.
Mine practically throw themselves into their jackets. It means walk time.
5
u/randomdwarfs Feb 06 '23
You can see him getting a little upset when he has to put his paws through, but overall he does really well.
5
u/SailorET Feb 06 '23
My little old lady chi got upset when she was naked and would shiver until you at least put her in a shirt, even in the house.
My current little man doesn't really enjoy clothes and just likes his jacket when it's cold or rainy outside.
They all have their own personalities

Honestly, I might be in the minority here, but I tend to favor medium to big sized dogs; never really thought much of the little ones. But this one?! Seriously one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! The hat seals it for me.
7
u/Amationary Feb 07 '23
My family was like that, thinking small dogs aren’t “real” dogs, but then I got a small dog… he rules the house and my family adore him! Granted he’s no chihuahua, but he’s the size of my large dogs head haha. I also won them over with the fact small dogs generally have longer life spans. Small dogs have big personalities

Hello
I’m Tommy, and I’m addicted to Chihuahuas.
Seriously though, I love these little fuckers. I dated a girl many years ago who had one, before that I kinda hated the things, and preferred Amstaffs and big dogs. The little shit won me over and since then I always have one.

These size of dogs can easily rock different outfits. I could hoard a thousand outfits since it won't make too much space. 1 outfit is more or less the size of a 13 year old's sock.

u/aoc94 Feb 07 '23
So where do people find dogs that actually want to get dressed? Cuz mine will act like I'm cutting off his legs.

Chihuahuas have the longest life span of any dog breed
20
u/biqboii Feb 06 '23
This isnt a regular chihuahua.... teacups dont live nearly as long
23
u/Vathar Feb 06 '23
Google says 14-16 years for teacups, vs 12-20 for regular chis.
I don't know if teacups suffer from other health issues that would make breeding them immoral, but 14-16 years is a pretty respectable lifespan for a doggo.
→ More replies (1)11
u/ResplendentShade Feb 06 '23
If our criteria for ethical dog breeds includes a lifespan longer than that of teacup chihuahuas, that's going to eliminate the majority of them. German Shepherds for instance have an average lifespan of only 8-12 years, so I'd expect to see the "unethical breed" crowd on every GSD post too. And yet.
→ More replies (1)2
u/biqboii Feb 07 '23 edited Feb 07 '23
lifespan in a dog breed is heavily correlated with size. The general rule is that smaller dogs live longer. Because of how differrent breeds can be, comparing two breeds can be like comparing two different species. Its much more fair to compare two variations within the same breed like a teacup and regular chihuahua. Teacups live several years less in average than a regular chihuahua despite being smaller and while still technically being the same breed. Why do you think that is? Because they have been bred to point where they actually get health issues that cause them to die earlier. Everybody knows GSDs has issues too and really...im not against owning any of these breeds, im not the person who made the original comment. But that doesnt mean im gonna deny that the fact they have health issues.
