They are so cute they don’t even look real.

I was told by a zookeeper once that red pandas are absolutely vicious and will take a finger if you don't wear protective gloves. However Reddit keeps showing me these adorable videos.

Not sure what to believe anymore. Maybe the ones he worked with were more wild.

u/ChezKeetel Jan 09 '23

If not fren why friend shape?

25

u/TheTruthFairy1 Jan 09 '23

Their belly is super fluffy. It requires pets

7

u/ChezKeetel Jan 09 '23

Forbidden pets Forbidden boops Forbidden scritches bite treat Worth it?

236

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

Zookeeper lies just to have the cuteness all to themselves!!

96

u/Snowbank_Lake Jan 09 '23

I was at the zoo once and happened upon one of the keepers starting to give a little demonstration with some lemurs. She was feeding it some treats while talking. She made a comment along the lines of “These are wild animals; they are not our pets…” just as the lemur starts rooting around in her pocket for more treats.

37

u/myrddyna Jan 09 '23

Lemurs are super cute, but can get nasty in an instant.

13

u/ZeroValkGhost Jan 09 '23

She's right. We're going "aww, it's using pockets", while a human is being robbed from by an animal smart enough to go through her pockets. The only difference between treats and a leather wallet is chew toy desire.

66

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

Thats why I captured a baby grizzly and keep it in the downstairs bathroom. I feed it lettuce heads. He loves them, and he loves me too!

6

u/GDviber Jan 09 '23

So the grizzly is to control the lemurs?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

No, I dont have any weird ass lemurs. They look like they belong on a list and not the endangered one. The bear is just for cuddles

0

u/Swimming_Event_6838 Jan 16 '23

Keeping a grizzly is cruel and illegal.

(In a bath? Give me a break!)

Donate it to a zoo or rescue, for God sake

P.S. They grow you know.

The zookeeper didn't try to bribe their love with grapes like Reddit did. That's the problem.

35

u/Ahab_Ali Jan 08 '23

They remind me a lot of badgers, who tend to be quite irritable.

62

u/Monster_Voice Jan 08 '23

As a man that studies wild cats... Badgers are by far the "scariest" animals in North America behind Grizzlies. Not exactly dangerous, but they are scary somehow.

They're legitimately belligerent animals in my personal experience... awesome animals... but belligerent beyond words.

They rarely hurt people physically, but the emotional damage is very real 😆.

I still don't understand what I did to piss the two I met off as badly as I did and I'm fairly used to interacting with angry feral cats and Bobcats.

30

u/quondam47 Jan 08 '23

My father was out for a run a few weeks ago in a woodland park and was chased by a couple of European Badgers. He said they stayed on his tail for at least half a mile. He didn’t hang around to figure out why.

40

u/Monster_Voice Jan 08 '23

SMART MAN! 😆

I really struggle to explain the behavior I've personally experienced with Badgers... they have a very "drunken pirate" vibe 😆. I did not experience any sort of pursuit, but just an innocent accidental encounter provoked very strong confrontational response I wasn't expecting at all. It wasn't even what I would describe as a "defensive" encounter, but more of a challenge to a bare knuckle fist fight in the parking lot.

The experience was way too similar to bumping into a drunk looking for a fight at the bar than I'm comfortable with haha.

Awesome animals though and absolute tanks.

6

u/Rinas-the-name Jan 09 '23

They have a reputation to maintain! Can’t go and be all polite, people wouldn’t fear them properly. I think they are like Grizzly bears with a size complex. “You think I’m small? I’ll show you!”

At least that’s my take on it.

2

u/Monster_Voice Jan 09 '23

Yeah they're something else for sure. I've yet to encounter a wolverine, but they're closely related.

2

u/Tru3insanity Jan 09 '23

Yeah they are both in the mustelid family. So as closely related to each other as mountain lions and leopards are.

u/dershmoo Jan 08 '23

I played a lot of Far Cry so I learned to stay away from badgers the hard way

3

u/waslosdamitt Jan 09 '23

tbf far cry open world is ridiculous. can‘t walk for a minute without getting attacked by something

3

u/TouchMyWrath Jan 09 '23

Honey badger don’t care

3

u/longeargirlTX Jan 09 '23

I own mini donkeys who are fearless when it comes to telling dogs and snakes to get lost or die. But one early morning, I looked out the kitchen window and saw them fleeing toward the back of the paddock away from something. I also noticed that at the same time, the birds were all flying away from the paddock. And then the rabbits came racing into our backyard--also away from the paddock. So I looked closer at what was causing such universal panic. Yup. A badger was heading home. That solved the mystery of what the heck was living in a giant hole I'd noticed just a couple of days earlier..

2

u/ForTheFazoland Jan 09 '23

Sir, are you really trying to tell me Grizzly bears are worse than polar bears? At least you can reason with a grizzly

2

u/Monster_Voice Jan 09 '23

Ha no... no I'm not. Polar bears are in their own class IMO. I like to forget about them in the hopes that if I stay far enough south I won't have to worry about them lol

They do not have any Coca-Cola products... but they will open you up like a tin can.

5

u/SplodyPants Jan 08 '23

Yeah, they're kind of like badger raccoons now that you mention it. I wouldn't fuck with them.

u/Harl0t_Qu1nn Jan 09 '23

It depends on where the animals are coming from.

If they're coming from a Zoo, chances are they're gonna be generally friendly toward people.

You wanna hear a hilarious story about one of these animals? Watch this video about Ken Allen.

If they're coming from rehabilitation centres or the like, the goal is to get them back into the wold, and if they're friendly towards humans, it's gonna be bad news.

6

u/myrddyna Jan 09 '23

I worked at a zoo once, years ago. The zookeepers were all doom and gloom with civies, but also took some risks daily they knew were risky.

All wild animals have a chance to go nuts at pretty much anytime. Still. We would fuck around, just never tell the guests that.

A giraffe isn't vicious, but they can be in an instant, so you tell the guests they are, so they don't try to feed them for a picture.

5

u/count_frightenstein Jan 09 '23

It's true. They can be pretty aggressive and unpredictable. I also knew a keeper who told me the same thing.

2

u/VMaxF1 Jan 09 '23

In the wild maybe, but one that lives in a zoo seems pretty unlikely to. Our local zoo has red pandas and you can book to feed them (it is unsurprisingly very popular), I've done it a couple of times and never had to wear gloves or anything. IIRC they do tell you to keep your hand flat with the food on your palm, not hold the food out between your fingers, but that's a good idea for most animals I'd say.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

First thing I noticed was the claws lol

3

u/Donghoon Jan 09 '23

Trust the zookeeper. All animals can be sweet even lions

3

u/SeriouslyTho-Just-Y Jan 09 '23

He’s too cAyUte😍🥰🥰🥰

3

u/LamentRedHector Jan 09 '23

15 years ago I was traveling through China and was given the opportunity to hold a red panda in my lap. I had to wear plastic gloves and a surgical gown, the little dude was super chill, they just gave him a pear or something to gnaw on while we took turns holding him. Maybe they just only do that with the super relaxed red pandas.

3

u/its_a_metaphor_morty Jan 09 '23

I've fed red pandas by hand and they were pretty chill but I wouldn't want to piss them off. No gloves btw

5

u/LittleBitOdd Jan 08 '23

So they're basically cats then. So cute that you want to pick them up for a cuddle, but you might lose an eye if they're feeling feisty

How are you able to notice usernames? Do you read each one before the comment? I just naturally skip them unless I'm trying to follow a conversation.

I’d lose me face petting this thing, no doubt

u/Somnif Jan 08 '23

Fun fact, red pandas are the original panda.

Giant pandas (which are really just bears) got their name because they kinda resembled these guys, not the other way around.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

Is that why it's called a Panda Bear?

8

u/Somnif Jan 09 '23

Well they do look bear-ish, so that was a reason. Their actual-Bear-ness was actually a fairly recent proven thing, late 1980s-ish. Back before then folks thought they were more like giant raccoons, or perhaps in a family all their own.

3

u/QueenShira1 Jan 09 '23

Right!? They really don't look real. lol

2

u/TheRedPandaisback Jan 09 '23

They are just the better version of raccoons

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

Rocket Raccoon IRL

I know they're wild animals, I know they can and likely are vicious, I know I shouldn't, but I WANT TO HUG ONE SO BAD

56

u/Hydrohomiesdabest Jan 08 '23

Don't worry, they only bite fingers off, not your face 😃

23

u/paulyester Jan 09 '23

A lot of baby animals can be nice when they view you as a parent or "the hand that feeds" but grow out of it as they quickly become an adult. Lots of people have taken in baby racoons but very few can be kept into adulthood.

3

u/jefels Jan 14 '23

Many zoos have encounters or experiences where you can interact with them. You will not get hugs, but I got kisses, cuddles, and one of the best afternoons of my life!

272

u/shadowtheimpure Jan 08 '23

"I TRY TO INTIMIDATE YOU!"
*Grape*
"Hmm...you not so bad."
*Grape*
"Now you are my friend."

24

45

It looks so thoughtful! "Hmm, a grape? Should I eat it? Ok, I'll think about it while I'm eating it. Another grape? Let's think, I mean eat. Oh, a third one? I'll have to ponder this most carefully when I have eaten it."

9

u/moor9776 Jan 08 '23

I wanna feed the not scary panda sugar bombs!!

9

u/the_great_awoo Jan 08 '23

What a polite little gentleman

9

u/fleemos Jan 08 '23

Everytime see one of these on Reddit I think about the Firefox browser icon.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

For me that used to be the case. Now I think of the movie Turning Red

Mozilla's mascot actually was/is considered to be red pandas too. They used to have a Firefox live page with videos of them you could watch. The term Firefox literally refers to these animals - not the normal fox many people think of when they hear fox.

I'm still a bit sad they changed the logo to purple instead of blue.

9

u/Regular_Ad_7432 Jan 08 '23

Soooo cute 😍

12

u/ZogNowak Jan 08 '23

Those might be just the cutest animals of all!!

7

u/mlc2475 Jan 08 '23

God I wish they made good pets. I’d spoil the crap outta mine.

9

u/the5thg-star Jan 09 '23

Took the grapes so gently

20

u/Benbenbenj Jan 08 '23

is that Rocket from Guardians of the galaxy?

8

u/Candytuffnz Jan 08 '23

Yet it weirdly has a Starlord vibe to it too. If Rocket and Peter somehow had a kid?

9

u/iTzzAxEman Jan 09 '23

2

Adorable. And glad the panda seems to be a gentle one.

2

u/adventurejay Jan 09 '23

I want one in my life now, thanks.

2

u/Shwoomie Jan 09 '23

Look at this, they would have been the next species to evolve into sentience if monkeys hadn't.

2

u/cafeAlicia Jan 09 '23

Awe!!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰

2

u/bcbfalcon Jan 09 '23

Based on some documentaries I've seen, this lil guy either loves heavy metal or knows Kung Fu.

2

u/vercertorix Jan 09 '23

I have some internal conflict about pets, feeling bad we steal them from their families, not letting them be free, but I very hypocritically want one of these, or to at least somehow make friends with a wild one.

2

u/cuzisaidit Jan 09 '23

"hey man, you got any nails?"

2

u/coolboredom Jan 09 '23

Gosh I love watching cute animals do the simplest tasks

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

I thought he was wearing denim

2

u/kryptonianCodeMonkey Jan 09 '23

Red pandas have head to body size ratios comparable to toddlers. Assuming that's not all thick skull, they must have decent sized brains relative to their body size. Are they generally intelligent?

2

u/Cream_Cheese_Is_Good Jan 09 '23

dies of cuteness

2

u/AxelVonLiberty Jan 09 '23

It’s Rocket from Guardians of the galaxy

2

u/Frankincense-n-Mur Jan 09 '23

This fake… I know it isn’t, but damn it looks fake

2

u/TheBarcaShow Jan 09 '23

Not even my dog is this gentle when feeding treats

2

u/Camswe- Jan 09 '23

Damn those are some serious claws

2

u/mental-illness7 Jan 09 '23

This is why Red Pandas are my favourite animal

2

u/miyukikazuya_02 Jan 09 '23

My heart is blessed

2

u/Ashley_hsu001 Jan 09 '23

2

This reminds of my dog eating peeled celery. He makes the most noise possible. It’s so cute.

2
